Following the traditions of the past few years and in recognition of the International Translation Day which is celebrated on 30 September, this post is to officially begin the discussion, planning as well as execution of the WordPress Translation Day for 2022. Thanks to @tobifjellner for initiating the discussion with a P2 which allowed the community to share their preference and with a vast majority rooting for the event to be celebrated on September 28 this year.

WordPress Translation Day is back! @tobifjellner published an early planning post to discuss the timing, format, and volunteer roles. For the seventh edition of the event and after 2 years of online-only format, we are hoping to see some in-person Meetups this year! When a user starts translating and the reviewer rejects one of his or her translations, the translator may feel bad, even as a personal issue, about the rejection of his or her work. To reduce the aggressiveness of the action and try to have a more positive translation environment, we have created a “proof of concept” (PR here), where we changed the word “Reject” to “Request changes”. We want community members to review the change, which only affects the visual part, and give us your feedback. Below, you can see a series of screenshots of what the current situation looks like and what the proposed changes are.

There has been more progress in developing the feedback feature to improve the communication between translators and editors.
We would love some feedback on the new notifications system on translate.wordpress.org around opting into the email notifications. Share your comments on the post on the best balance for notifications so they are as useful as possible without being too intrusive.

Here we have 2 different situations:
1.1.1. Plugins and themes
The plugin/theme authors will receive an email (Themes: only one email address. Plugins: all the plugin authors.). In the replies, all the users that write in the thread will receive an email. If none of these users is an author, the other authors will receive an email.
1.1.2. CoreCoreCore is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress., Patterns, metaMetaMeta is a term that refers to the inside workings of a group. For us, this is the team that works on internal WordPress sites like WordCamp Central and Make WordPress. and apps
Some special users (to be determined, we want to get users from the Polyglots community) will receive an email each time a request of this type is sent in a translation of this type (all translations of projects that are neither themes nor plugins). In the replies, all the users that write in the thread will receive an email. If none of these users is a special user, the other special users will receive an email.
1.2. Question in one language
The GTEGeneral Translation EditorA General Translation Editor (often referred to as GTE) is a person, who has global access to validate strings on all projects for a specific locale./PTEProject Translation EditorA Project Translation Editor (often referred to as PTE) is a person, who has access to validate strings on a specific project (for example BuddyPress, WooCommerce or Twenty Fourteen) for one specific locale. A project translation editor can approve strings that are added by translation contributors. Per project translation, editors are appointed by a general translation editor after a request by the project author or by the contributors themselves./CLPTECross-locale Project Translation EditorA Cross-Locale Project Translation Editor is an account owned by a plugin or theme author (or the authoring organization), which uses professional translators to localize their product. The cross-locale project translation editor can import/validate strings on a specific project for more than one locale. This role has the same capabilities as a Project Translation Editor over multiple locales instead of one. Cross-Locale Project Translation Editors need to meet a set of criteria before being appointed by General Translation Editors. for this project and localeLocaleLocale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. A list of all locales supported by WordPress in https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/ will receive an email. In the replies, if none of these users is a GTE/PTE/CLPTE, all the GTE/PTE/CLPTE for this project and locale will receive an email.
1.3. Bulk rejection
The GTE/PTE/CLPTE can reject all the strings without making any comment, clicking on the “Reject” button on the popover. The translator will receive one email with all the rejected strings and the comment if the GTE/PTE/CLPTE had made a comment.
1.4. Single rejection
The GTE/PTE/CLPTE can reject the string without giving feedback, clicking on the “Reject” button on the sidebarSidebarA sidebar in WordPress is referred to a widget-ready area used by WordPress themes to display information that is not a part of the main content. It is not always a vertical column on the side. It can be a horizontal rectangle below or above the content area, footer, header, or any where in the theme.. The translator will receive one email with the rejected string and the comment if the GTE/PTE/CLPTE had made a comment.
2. Number of notifications
At translate.wordpress.org, we know that some users will receive (not in the first days/months) an significant amount of notifications. Once we release this new functionality, we want to get feedback from the users to know if this situation is happening, and we’re committed to quickly make adjustments where necessary so that the notifications will be useful. In this case, we will talk about developing a dashboard for the users (GTE/PTE/CLPTE/translators) that would allow to say up to date by checking the dashboard instead of receiving notifications.
We’re concerned about due to the opt-in, many people will initially miss that conversations are going on because they won’t get notified. We’re thinking about how to make people aware of the opt-in possibility and how they’d benefit from it.
A banner on the top explaining that you can opt in. That banner can be closed and won’t show again.
A one-time full screen opt-in screen that can be closed and will never appear again.
Allow opting in with a checkbox when submitting a translation.
Other ideas?
In the footer of all discussions, the user will have some links to opt-in/opt-out in the whole system or only for the current discussion.

They are currently looking for volunteers to help translate some workshop materials to Swiss-French and other locale languages. Amharic is one of the official languages of Ethiopia, used by 21 million native speakers in the country. WordPress Amharic Locale (#am) was added to the WordPress project in 2014 and recently celebrated its first release of WordPress coreCoreCore is the set of software required to run WordPress. When did you decide to contribute translations?
When I see any Amharic or Tigrinya website powered by WordPress, it is usually half English and half translated. It is not intuitive; the reason is that they don’t have the latest WordPress release in any of those languages, so I decided why not contribute.
How much time did you spend?
2-3 hr/week or more. I couldn’t come up with all hours I spent on it.
Did you celebrate in any way when you reached 100%?
I was happy when you shared WordPress Amharic became downloadable on wordpress.orgWordPress.orgThe community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https://wordpress.org/.
What’s your next goal?
My next step is to contribute to the Tigrinya language, for the same reason I started translating in Amharic.

Training new contributors and teams have been brought up a few times in the past year, most recently in the 2022 team planning post.
WordCampWordCampWordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. mentors once built a spreadsheet called “WordCamp Milestones/Level of Effort” for organizer team lead to use, which lists tasks broken down by teams and timeframes. This is now incorporated into the dashboard of every WordCamp website as a “Planning Checklist”.
Now, Polyglots teamPolyglots TeamPolyglots Team is a group of multilingual translators who work on translating plugins, themes, documentation, and front-facing marketing copy. https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/ contribution isn’t exactly like WordCamp planning, but a similar model could work for us.
Just an example – we could divide the effort into 4 phases (1. Key Translation, 2. Team Expansion, 3. Continuous Collaboration, and 4. Further Growth) with a list of priority tasks and goals for each phase.
This is NOT meant to be forcing any team to strictly follow one path, but rather a guiding checklist to understand the area to focus on for each timeframe.

The WordCamp mentoring process is documented extensively and a specific mentor is assigned to WordCamp organizers.
For locale teams that are just starting out or struggling to break out of inactivity, it could help to have an assigned mentor who periodically checks in to help resolve any blockers.

Who We Are
The Diverse Speaker Training group (#WPDiversity)’s mission is to foster, promote, and support diversity in WordPress, particularly elevating diverse organizers and leaders. The team does this by running three Diversity programs in WordPress, all with the goal of helping WordPress MeetupMeetupAll local/regional gatherings that are officially a part of the WordPress world but are not WordCamps are organized through https://www.meetup.com/. A meetup is typically a chance for local WordPress users to get together and share new ideas and seek help from one another. Searching for ‘WordPress’ on meetup.com will help you find options in your area. and WordCampWordCampWordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. organizers build more diverse speaker lineups in terms of gender, race, class, sexuality, ability, age, etc. This is the first step that leads to our mission.
The team typically focuses on 1 or 2 languages at a time, but if you wish to facilitate more, that works, too.
(Translations are currently underway for Spanish (Latin American) and Portuguese BR because an event is coming up in November that needs these two languages.)
