Resources to help translate GDPR terms and new strings for WordPress 4.9.6

Dear polyglots,

As posted last night, we’re expecting WordPress 4.9.6 to land this week and it has a lot of GDPR terminology included in the stringsString A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings.. There have been several requests for help on SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/. for not just GDPR but also some specific terms mentioned in newer strings.

I’m posting here several resources that can help you while translating these strings:

GDPR translation resources:

  • A place with GDPR information from a WP and platform point of view is https://privacy.blog/
  • The GDPR law translated in all EU languages: http://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=uriserv:OJ.L_.2016.119.01.0001.01.ENG
  • EU terminology (also covers European languages): http://iate.europa.eu/

Translation tips for specific terms:

Thank you to @presskorp who has gotten some explanations of some of the terms that you find among the new strings. Here are the explanations:

  • “personal data eraser” – is basically a tool that helps administrators erase the personal data of a particular user on the site
  • “personal data exporter” is basically a tool assembles into a file the personal data of a particular user on the site
  • at the technical level, both tools use “erase” and “export” functions exposed by coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. or plugins to do their work – they call these functions repeatedly until all the data is erased or assembled

If any of you have found other difficult terms within the new strings that they’ve gotten explained by a developer, please post them in comments here so you can help other translators that are struggling.

Thank you!

Subtitles for the 4.7 Release Video

Dear polyglots,

The WordPress 4.7 releaseRelease A release is the distribution of the final version of an application. A software release may be either public or private and generally constitutes the initial or new generation of a new or upgraded application. A release is preceded by the distribution of alpha and then beta versions of the software. video finalized and presented tonight during the State of the WordState of the Word This is the annual report given by Matt Mullenweg, founder of WordPress at WordCamp US. It looks at what we’ve done, what we’re doing, and the future of WordPress. https://wordpress.tv/tag/state-of-the-word/., so let’s get this going and translate it to as many languages as we can.

Here are the instructions to subtitle the video:

1. Open the release video project on Amara

2. To add your language click “Add a new language”

3. Select your language. This will load the subtitle editor.

4. On the left side of the subtitle editor you’ll see the English subtitles. On the right side you can translate into your own language. Follow the instructions to add the subtitles and sync them.

5. Add the translations to your language, sync them and don’t forget to

6. Save and Publish the subtitles.

If your language’s language code is not supported by Amara, you can add the subtitle file here and we will try and add them manually to WordPress.tv.

The deadline for translating the video is Tuesday, December 6th. I realise this is very short notice, but we will be grateful for any help that we can get.

Thank you to everyone in advance. Your work is so important for so many people around the globa

Love,

P.

We’re in hard string freeze for 4.7 – Prepare your locales for the the release

Dear Polyglots,

The last stringsString A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings. for 4.7 (the about page strings) have been imported to the development project and that means no strings will change anymore before Tuesday, December 6th, the expected releaseRelease A release is the distribution of the final version of an application. A software release may be either public or private and generally constitutes the initial or new generation of a new or upgraded application. A release is preceded by the distribution of alpha and then beta versions of the software. date for WordPress 4.7.

That means there are two things for all GTEs to do now:

1. Translate the 4.7 project, Admin and Network admin

It’s time to head to translate.wordpress.org and finish translating the last batch of new strings.

Please don’t forget that in order to qualify for an automatic release, you need to have all strings in the following projects translated 100%:

There is also a new default theme that comes with 4.7 – Twenty Seventeen which can also use some of your time.

2. Prepare the SVN directory for your locale for automated packages

Handbook page for reference: Automated release packages

Does my localeLocale Locale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. A list of all locales supported by WordPress in https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/ qualify for automated release?

  • If all you have is a license, readme, and wp-config-sample.php (or no custom changes at all), everything will be automated for you if you follow the instructions above. Both language packs and release packages will automatically be created. If you are not at 100% at that time, then language packs and release packages will be created when you reach 100%. If you later modify a translation (to fix a typo, for example), your language pack and release packageRelease package release package is a packaged version of WordPress. That is, a ZIP file consisting of WordPress in its entirety, along with PO and MO files for core, the PO and MO files of default themes and Akismet, and any custom changes a locale has. In the past, most locales built their release package using the form in Rosetta’s dashboard. will be regenerated.
  • If you have extensive custom changes, you will need to manually create a package via RosettaRosetta The code name of the theme for the local WordPress sites (eg. bg.wordpress.org is a “Rosetta” site). All locale specific WordPress sites are referred to as “Rosetta sites.” The name was inspired from the ancient Rosetta Stone, which contained more or less the same text in three different languages. as you have done in the past.

On Slack, watch out for messages like this one:

Your locale is good to go if you see your locale in the “x release packages for y were built” message.

Upcoming hard string freezeString freeze The term "string freeze" is used by the core team to mark the end of changes to the strings of an upcoming release. A string freeze also means that there will be no more strings added to the core project. Sometimes a string freeze has two phases a soft freeze and a hard freeze. A string freeze is announced on the Polyglots blog by the current release lead.

According to the development schedule, hard strings freeze should come on November 29th (+1d) and the release is expected on December 6th (+1d). There will be another post here and a global ping when that happens.

Thank you all for your hard work!

Behind one or two major versions – releasing 95%+ locales for WordPress 4.6

Hey everyone,

It’s been a week since 4.6 and it’s amazing that we’ve got 60 localesLocale Locale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. A list of all locales supported by WordPress in https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/ released for it. I’d like to suggest that we releaseRelease A release is the distribution of the final version of an application. The GTE (General Translation Editor) and LM (Locale Manager) roles can add new users with the "Project Translation Editor" role that can approve translations for specific projects. There are two different Translation Editor roles: General Translation Editor and Project Translation Editor for one of these locales. Please follow the instructions for a manual release in the handbook to create a package for your language.

Locales Behind more than one major versions

NB! That means your translation is inactive and your language IS NOT available for download or select on install anymore! A manual release is highly encouraged.

When a translation goes behind more than one major version it disappears for new users. That’s why it is highly recommended that locales translated 90%+ and previously active release now even though their translations need a bit more work to get to 100%. I’m including three locales at 85% + as well.

P.S. Completing your translations to 100% will trigger an automatic release for most of these locales so that’s another way of releasing if you’re not keen to go for the manual process.

A software release may be either public or private and generally constitutes the initial or new generation of a new or upgraded application. A release is preceded by the distribution of alpha and then beta versions of the software. video is being finalised as we speak but the voice over is already available for translation, so let’s get this going and translate it to as many languages as we can. The 4.5 release video was subtitled into 31 languages but I know we can do better than that 🙂

Our jazz legend is male.

The deadline for translating the video is Monday, Aug 15th, midnight CET.

Thank you to everyone who’ll help us get the release video to more people around the world.

Love,

P.
