Weโ€™ve prepared activities for for both new and experienced contributors to join in on the day.

We plan on hosting some online events during Contributor Day, too, so that people who couldnโ€™t attend WordCamp Asia can still participate remotely! Please follow this post to receive a notice once these online events are scheduled.

Whether youโ€™re new to the team or an experienced contributor, weโ€™d love for you to answer our Individual Learner Survey. This survey will help us identify the needs of WordPress learners and help shape the goals for the team.

Once youโ€™ve answered the survey, click the buttons below to jump to the section in this post that is most relevant to you.

Iโ€™m new to the Training Team!

Thanks for joining! Please walk through our brand new Onboarding Program. This will give you an overview of the team, help you set up the accounts you need to contribute, and even walk you through your first contribution!

We expect the onboarding program above to take 30-60 minutes. Once youโ€™ve completed onboarding, jump into these other activities to continue contributing!

Review published content and submit feedback

The WordPress software continues to grow and new features get added all the time. Reviewing published content and updating content is important in keeping the Learn WordPress website current. Follow the team guide about reviewing published content to leave feedback about any content below. (Reviewing older content would be helpful!)

Submit new content topic ideas

Have a look through the Learn WordPress website. Are there any topics you feel would be great to add to the website? Come add your topic ideas to our GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. I have experience working with the Training Team!

Thanks for joining! Depending on your interests, there are a few ways you can get involved. For each of the tasks below, the team handbook should help you with process specifics. But if you have any questions, feel free to reach out!

Setting Team Goals for 2023

This year, the Training Team identified our shared values. Based on these values, we are now setting goals for the rest of the year.

Join in on the discussions happening on the post Training Team 2023 Goals Setting. Leave any thoughts or comments you might have right there in the post.

We will be publishing a list of finalized goals on March 1st.

Content Creation

Are you interested in creating content? If so, then creating content related to the WordPress 6.1 and WordPress 6.2 releases are our priority today.

Start by searching for a piece of content youโ€™d like to work on in either the 6.1 project board or 6.2 project board. Once found, comment on the GitHub issue so that we can assign it to you.

Content Translation

Are you interested in translating content? If so, then translating content related to the Localization Foundation project is our priority today. Do you speak Spanish, Japanese, German, French, or Italian? Come help us localize content for either these five or our 8 other languages.

You can find our project management sheet right here, and learn how to get started in content localization in this handbook page.

Content Reviews

Are you interested in editing content? If so, then reviewing content waiting to be published is our priority today.

Start by finding a piece of content to review in our content development board. This GitHub view has filtered all content waiting for reviews before it is published. Follow the teamโ€™s Guidelines for reviewing content and leave your reviews right there in GitHub.

Triage Developer Issues

Are you a developer interested in working on issues for the Learn website? If so, then working through our Website Development project board is our priority today.

Start by reviewing issues โ€œIn Reviewโ€. Any help you can provide issues โ€œIn Progressโ€ would be great, too. But in generally, any attention you can give to any issue would be much appreciated.

Training Team’s new onboarding program is now live!

I am pleased to announce that the Training Team has launched a new Onboarding Program today! Go ahead, and check out the new onboarding program below:

Program overview

The onboarding program will lead you down one of 5 paths corresponding to 5 โ€œareas of contributionโ€ in the Training Team. Regardless of which path you choose, you will be guided through:

  • The Training Teamโ€™s mission
  • Creating a WordPress.orgWordPress.org The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https://wordpress.org/, SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/, and GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the โ€˜pull requestโ€™ where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged by the repository owner. https://github.com/ account and understanding what each are used for in the Training Team
  • Completing your first contribution (quick tasks that can be completed within 30-60 minutes)
  • Further contribution opportunities beyond onboarding
  • Introduction to team meeting times

At the end of each path, there is a Google form inviting you to leave your name as a contributor interested in continuing to contribute to the team. The team has long wanted a better way to track active contributors in the team, and this is our most recent attempt to do this.

Project timeline summary

The team identified a need to improve the onboarding process for new contributors back in June 2022. Since then, multiple discussions have happened both on this blog and in Slack as to what that onboarding process would look like.

  • A formal proposal was published in October 2022: Proposal: Create a new onboarding experience to the Training Team.
  • Volunteers assembled to start working on this in November 2022.
  • Drafts for were made public for review in January 2023. Feedback was received both in the project thread above, and in GitHub issues tracking the creation of each new handbook page: GitHub label โ€“ 2023 Onboarding Paths.
  • The new Onboarding Project was launched in February 2023 โ€“ in time for WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what theyโ€™ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. Asia!

Whatโ€™s next?

Try it out!

As a team, we will be promoting this new Onboarding Program to all new contributors. During onboarding, contributors are encouraged to reach out in Slack for any help they may need. In order to provide the best support to them, we invite all current Training Team members to walk through this onboarding program, too! Test the path youโ€™re currently involved in first. And test the other paths out, too!

Weโ€™re open to feedback!

As the team continues to grow and evolve, so should the onboarding program. If you have feedback about the program, please leave your thoughts in the #training Slack channel at any time.

What are some โ€œquick winsโ€ for new contributors?

As part of this project, weโ€™ve created a new handbook page titled Quick contributions you can make now. The intention is to list quick contributions one can do that take no more than 30-60 minutes.

Content creation generally take hours, days, or weeks to complete. This makes it difficult for (new) contributors to find what they can do exactly with smaller pockets of time. We hope this new page will help people who just have small amounts of time to identify areas they can contribute to easily.

At the moment, the page links to the initial contributions mentioned in the onboarding program. If Training Team members have any ideas about other quick wins (tasks no longer than 30-60 minutes) people could contribute to, please comment on this post with those ideas.

Finally, a big โ€œThank Youโ€ go to all Training Team members who have been involved in this project! Special thanks go to @webtechpooja @digitalchild @amitpatelmd who volunteered as project members, and reviewers @nomadskateboarding @askdesign who went through and reviewed the program before it was published.

Video conferencing options for Online Workshops

Itโ€™s great to see how many Online Workshops are being scheduled! With that, we are finding that more needs are arising for video conferencing options. While the Training Team has been sharing a single account in the past, this is not sustainable for the teamโ€™s growing needs, so I thought Iโ€™d share some options that are available to you.

Online Workshop facilitators are encouraged to use their own video conferencing software. If you do not have one available, your options are:

  1. You are encouraged find a tool that works best for you. The Community Team has an excellent resource on Free Virtual Event Hosting Tools in which theyโ€™ve done the research for you!
  2. You can request the use of a Community Zoom Pro account. Itโ€™s recommended that you request this before the event is scheduled on Meetup.com, so the link can be provided when attendees RSVP.
  3. You can request use of the Training Teamโ€™s shared account by reaching out in the #training channel in SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/, so a Faculty member can assist you with scheduling. Again, note that itโ€™s recommended that you make this request well in advance of your event, so you can ensure that the account is available.

If you have any more video conferencing ideas to share for Online Workshop facilitators, please feel free to share in the comments!

Proposal: Training Faculty Developer Squad

Summary: This is a proposal for a new squad within the training faculty to focus on moving developer-related GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the โ€˜pull requestโ€™ where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged by the repository owner. https://github.com/ issues and pull requests forward.

With the growth of the Learn WordPress platform, the number of open bugs, enhancements, and open pull requests related to the platformโ€™s development and maintenance has increased:

In order to keep an eye on these, and any future bugs and enhancement requests, Iโ€™d like to propose a new developer squad within the Training Faculty made up of faculty administrators, to run regular GitHub triage sessions focused specifically on bugs, enhancements, and open PRs.

Membership

The faculty developer squad will be made up of Training Faculty administrators with development experience, who can help review, test, and assign tasks. The goal of this squad is not specifically to work on any of these items, but merely to help move things along.ย

Any contributor is welcome to work on any open issue/review any open PR, the faculty developer squad will merely facilitate this process.

Why only faculty members?

The main reasoning behind this is that faculty administrators have the required permissions to assign issues in GitHub. If youโ€™d like to be part of this squad but are not yet a faculty administrator, you can read more about the faculty administrator role here, which includes details on how to apply.ย

Development triage sessions

It is recommended that the faculty developer squad hold weekly triage sessions in the #meta-learn channel in the Making WordPress slackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/. Sessions will be run by one of the faculty developer squad members, and contributors are welcome to join these sessions.

A typical triage session will entail reviewing as many open issues and pull requests as possible during the hour, to determine their priority as they align with the training teamโ€™s goals for the year. Any interested contributors can also use this hour to ask that a specific issue be assigned to them to work on. For pull requests, the dev squad will see what is required to get the PR merged, and then either assign it to be reviewed, give feedback to the PR creator, or merge PRs that are good to go.ย

Once any interested faculty administrators have indicated their interest, we will plan our weekly triage session, as well as document faculty dev squad responsibilities.ย

Next steps

If you are a faculty administrator who is interested in being part of this dev squad, please indicate this in the comments below.ย

This post will be left open for 1 week until Friday, 10 February 2023 at 15:00 UTC, for any existing faculty administrators to indicate their interest, after which we will start planning for our first triage session. The reason for the short time for feedback is that this specific proposal is only open to existing faculty administrators. Once the initial faculty developer squad is confirmed, contributors who become faculty administrators will be welcome to join the squad.
