Hacktoberfest opportunities
We had lot of enquiries about if their contribution can count in Hactoberfest, so yes your Training team contribution to create content will count. Please follow this document for better understanding that how you can participate in Hactoberfest by contributing to Learn WordPress.

3. Updates

Approved sources for content โ€“ If you are creating content for Learn WordPress, you can use these list of sources to use in your content.

@Jonathanย bring awareness to this valid point regarding workshops and tutorials posted toย wordpress.tv, and copyright claims. Please go through this slack thread to know more about copyright claims. (Please note this slack thread link will move you away from this meeting,ย )

  • Demo Content lesson planย โ€“ In this lesson plan, you will get to know about how you can use demo content in WordPress. For context you can use these materials to create demo:

  • It is already included in ourย InstaWP siteย โ€“ We have a test site on InstaWP that support WordPress testing and if you are working on Lesson plan/ Tutorial you can use this site to capture screenshots and record video.

Course Design Review and Best Practices withย Allie Nimmons
@GoGinaMarieย has volunteered to turnย @Allie Nimmonsย Course Design Review and Best Practices videos into a team post. Thanks Gina! We will have a post soon.

Cross-team collaboration initiative

#docsย team would like to collaborate further on how our content connects together.

Course review checklist
Recently we have asked about is there any checklist for reviewing course, so for now we donโ€™t have but we have some nice suggestion on it. Please have a lookย  on if anyone would like to review course.

  • Include in GitHub issue โ€“ we can include review process/points in respective Github issue
  • Attribute the reviewers
  • Ideas fromย @Jonathanย so far:
  • Any spelling/grammar issues or anything that doesnโ€™t make sense
  • Technical correctness
  • Does the layering of information successfully build from lesson to lesson
  • Can you follow the steps outlined in the course

4. Request for comments

  1. Proposal: Faster Course Development with Video-Based Courses
  2. Project Proposal: Content Localization

These two proposals are open for your feedback, if you havenโ€™t made your feedback please do. Thanks

5. 6.1 updates

1.Information Sources for WP 6.1ย โ€“ you can find information related to what is coming in WP 6.1 version here. Courtney created this for us to review.ย

2.ย Use this site creation tool while creating content and testing WordPress 6.1ย

3. Text, screenshots, and familiarization completed by ASAP but not published until release day
4. Videos completed by Oct 28 but similarly not published untill release day.

6. Open Floor Discussions

Ben Evans Says

@annezazuย left some notes onย the Meeting Agenda, so let me copy them here for the team to see.

Wanted to note that I donโ€™t see fluid typography specifically mentioned there, unless thatโ€™s planned elsewhere (couldnโ€™t tell from the list). Itโ€™s a big feature to highlight. Ditto goes for using dimension controls for end users (and theme authors alike), in light of all the work being done there:ย
https://make.wordpress.org/core/2022/09/26/core-editor-improvement-catalyst-for-creativity/

Separately, the following has been pushed from this release:

Classic themes can now opt into appearance tools via a new theme support opening up tons of access to tooling.

HeaderHeader The header of your site is typically the first thing people will experience. The masthead or header art located across the top of your page is part of the look and feel of your website. It can influence a visitorโ€™s opinion about your content and you/ your organizationโ€™s brand. It may also look different on different screen sizes. and Footer blockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience. patterns for faster, well designed site building will be available for all themes along with pattern previews in the theme directory.

Ben Evans Says

Also, I wanted to note, Iโ€™ve been triagingย GitHub issues labeledย Translationย this week, to make sure things are moving forward. It is SO exciting to see so many new locales represented in our GitHub repo! Currently, we have Greek, Serbian, Indonesian, and German translations of lesson plans either in-the-works or published already!

Pooja Derashri Says

We also have Hindi lesson plan available to review, I am just half way through the lesson plan review and will publish it soon. So then we will have one more locale lesson plan in our Learn WP site.ย

Amit Patelย Says

I have been speaker in Ahmedabad meet up event last sunday on CoreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. Web Vitals and tools for the same, And planning to conduct online workshop next month.

News

Note takers for upcoming meetings:

Project Thread: GitHub Process Updates

  • Please review and provide comments on the GithubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the โ€˜pull requestโ€™ where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged by the repository owner. https://github.com/ process updates.

ย UX Feedback

  • During a recent episode, UXUX UX is an acronym for User Experience - the way the user uses the UI. Think โ€˜what they are doingโ€™ and less about how they do it. designerย @Piccia Neriย reviewedย Learn.WordPress.org. This post is a way to find the timestamps AND a request any support on filing GitHub issues for this, alongside updating this post with the GitHub issue links.
  • Next actions here include others also reviewing the suggestions and opening corresponding GitHub issues atย https://github.com/WordPress/Learn/issues/new.
  • Many of these are quite doable.ย  It would be ideal for coordinating with folks inย #designย to assess if/when Learn will get the same treatments asย WordPress.orgโ€™s homepage redesign.

Hacktoberfest opportunities

  • Giving a shoutout here to start thatย @Chetan Prajapatiย inquired about participating in Hacktoberfest. Thanks for the inspiration.
  • Hacktoberfestย is a way for open-source contributors to discover and contribute to projects.ย  In exchange for meeting the requirements, participants can receive a digital badge, t-shirt, or a tree planted in their name.
  • This year, there is also a new way to contribute including low or no-code options. That would fit in perfectly with the content we need to revise or create for WordPress 6.1 release, as well as translation initiatives.ย ย  See more atย https://hacktoberfest.com/about/#low-or-non-code.
  • As this does require a GitHub pull request for the systems to detect your contribution, please refer to the GitHub issue describing the process.ย  Always feel comfortable asking a question in this channel as well for help, and if you see other issues youโ€™d like to have labeled to count toward contribution.

Updates

  • ย @GoGinaMarieย has volunteered to turnย @Allie Nimmonsย Course Design Review and Best Practices videos into a team post this week. Thanks Gina!

Cross-team Collaboration Initiatives

#docsย team would like to collaborate further on how our content connects together. We have a few other ways to collaborate, including a changelog feature to display on the front end of content, how our content links to each other, notifying each other of updates/revisionsRevisions The WordPress revisions system stores a record of each saved draft or published update. The revision system allows you to see what changes were made in each revision by dragging a slider (or using the Next/Previous buttons). The display indicates what has changed in each revision. that may pertain to us, etc.ย  These would be development contributions for HelpHub, DevHub, and LearnWP.

Ideally, a working group could form after November 7.ย  This would allow time to focus on WordPress 6.1 content to be created/revised/shipped first. Folks interested in this include: @n8finch, @webtechpooja, @colorful-tones, @sagarladani

#polyglotsย has begun working more closely with our team as well. We are starting to sort out workflows for the translation of content on LearnWP and really excited by the many folks interested in helping. As we continue, we will work out how to ask for reviews from Polyglots along the way.

Sprint: WordPress 6.1 is coming!

  • See what needs to be revised/created in WP 6.1: https://github.com/orgs/WordPress/projects/33/views/10
  • This release is for RC1, release candidateRelease Candidate A beta version of software with the potential to be a final product, which is ready to release unless significant bugs emerge. 1.ย  At this time, we reach a freeze.ย  When those tickets are sorted, and the RCRelease Candidate A beta version of software with the potential to be a final product, which is ready to release unless significant bugs emerge. ships, we can begin working on video content as well for this release.ย
  • Look in this for coming changes:ย Information Sources for WP 6.1
  • To create content or test versions,ย Use this site creation tool while creating content and testing WordPress 6.1. It already has Theme Unit Test Data, the new Twenty Twenty Three theme, and will have the most current RC available when it ships. Note, your sites will only work for 4 hours, but if you need longer, I can help you override that. That tool from InstaWP is available forย #trainingย #docsย #marketingย andย #fse-outreach-experimentย teams to use while making content or testing.
  • Ideally, we hope to have all 6.1 content ready by Oct 28.ย
  • This is a list of everything for 6.1 with a priority ofย High.
  • Want to volunteer for a topic?ย  If no one is assigned, comment on the post requesting you be assigned to the topic. Need access to LearnWP? Leave a note in the channel.ย  Team Reps and Faculty members can provide that access for you.

Open Discussions

  • Daylight savings: We are about 3 weeks away from some of the Northern Hemisphere adjusting clocks. In 2 weeks, when the Americas/EMEA meeting happens again, we can take a poll to decide if we stick with UTC time or adjust to local time changes. Usually APAC does not shift, as many nations do not observe daylight saving time.
  • Ticket review and publish process: Approving tickets from โ€œreview in progressโ€ to โ€œpublishedโ€ was clarified by @courane01, @west7, and @psykro.

Chapter 1 โ€“ Chapter The Importance of AccessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both โ€œdirect accessโ€ (i.e. unassisted) and โ€œindirect accessโ€ meaning compatibility with a personโ€™s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accessibility) in UIUI UI is an acronym for User Interface - the layout of the page the user interacts with. Think โ€˜how are they doing thatโ€™ and less about what they are doing./UX Design

  • Accessibility is a crucial aspect of UI/UX design that should not be overlooked.
  • The WebAIM tool is a great way to evaluate the accessibility of a website, but it is not perfect.
  • Color contrast issues are one of the most common accessibility issues found on websites, but they are also one of the easiest to fix.
  • Centered text can be problematic for people with neurodivergent or partially sighted individuals, and it is generally not recommended in UI/UX design.
  • Proper alignment is essential in UI/UX design as it guides the eye and helps users take the desired action.
  • The recommended number of characters per line varies depending on the device and font size, but it is generally around 12 words per line.
  • It is important to consult with experts in web accessibility, such as scientists of vision, to ensure that a website is accessible to all users.
  • Chapter 2 โ€“ โ€“ UX design is crucial in creating effective learning resources.

  • The use of appropriate fonts and contrast can greatly affect the readability of the content.
  • It is important to consider the target audience and their specific needs when designing the UX of a page.
  • The placement and visibility of the call-to-action is also a key factor in guiding users towards their intended actions.
  • The use of clear and concise labels and headings can greatly improve the user experience.
  • It is important to differentiate between different types of content, such as tutorials and courses, to avoid confusion for users.
  • The placement and visibility of the menu and navigation bar can greatly affect the users ability to navigate the site.
  • The use of analytics and heat maps can provide valuable insights into user behavior and preferences.
  • The inclusion of features such as quizzes and workshops can enhance the learning experience for users.
  • Overall, a well-designed UX can greatly improve the effectiveness and usability of learning resources.Chapter 1: The Importance of User Journeys and Clear Calls to Action
  • The speaker discusses the importance of understanding user journeys and how they can help clarify the audience for a website.
  • Lesson plans and tutorials are mentioned as potential user journeys, but its unclear which one would be best for the site in question.
  • The speaker suggests that creating user flows can help identify obstacles and friction in the user journey.
  • The website being reviewed is for an upcoming live event, and the speaker notes that the headings and typography are lively and dynamic.
  • However, the speaker points out that the website lacks clear calls to action and underlines for links, which can be confusing for users with visual impairments.
  • The speaker also recommends adding hover states for images and links to improve user experience.
  • The website uses the Bricks page builder, which the speaker notes is fast and efficient.
  • Overall, the chapter emphasizes the importance of understanding user journeys and providing clear calls to action and visual cues for users.

Meeting recap notes is one of the best ways to get started contributing to a team. Please refer to thisย guide to get started.

Please review the WP Translation Contributor DayContributor Day Contributor Days are standalone days, frequently held before or after WordCamps but they can also happen at any time. They are events where people get together to work on various areas of https://make.wordpress.org/ There are many teams that people can participate in, each with a different focus. https://2017.us.wordcamp.org/contributor-day/ https://make.wordpress.org/support/handbook/getting-started/getting-started-at-a-contributor-day/

    HactoberFest Update

Last year,ย @Chetan Prajapatiย inspired the team to participate in Hacktoberfest. Previously this was primarily a developer oriented event. Efforts are underway for participation again this year, and now include options for technical content and translations. This is perfect timing with WP Translation Day qualifying, and WP AccessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both โ€œdirect accessโ€ (i.e. unassisted) and โ€œindirect accessโ€ meaning compatibility with a personโ€™s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). Supporting WP Diversity

    Julia Says

Hi Training team!ย @jillbinderย and I have a question for you! Jill is thinking about how to develop clear lesson plans so that other people in the WordPress community can lead the WPDiversity workshops (titledย Diverse Speaker Trainingย andย Organizing Diverse & Inclusive WordPress Eventsย ). I know that the Learn WordPressย Lesson Planย page could be a great home for this. Are there specific requirements around the facilitator notes and slide deck format? Specifically, can the slides be in Google Slides and Google Docs, or would you prefer a different format?

Drawing attention here to the work Jill is doing for WP Diversity efforts and how Learn can best support that. If you would like to get involved on that, please review the comments there.

Review Lesson item โ€“ย Extend a Block Theme Course

    Jonathan says

Hey thereย @faculty-smes. The first four lessons for my โ€œExtend a BlockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience. Theme Courseโ€ are finally at a point where Iโ€™m happy for folks to review them. All the lessons in this module are aimed to reviewing the fundamentals of a block theme:
    minimum required files โ€“ย https://github.com/WordPress/Learn/issues/868
    creating templates โ€“ย https://github.com/WordPress/Learn/issues/869
    creating template parts โ€“ย https://github.com/WordPress/Learn/issues/870
    exporting the theme โ€“ย https://github.com/WordPress/Learn/issues/955
To make reviewing easier, Iโ€™ve linked to the lesson content in the body of the GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the โ€˜pull requestโ€™ where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged by the repository owner. https://github.com/ issue, under the headingย Draft lesson for Review.ย This will take you to a markdown document in a separate repository.Iโ€™m creating the course content in GitHub so that it can be developed and reviewed publicly, before I migrate it over to a course on Learn WordPress.

    Participation in team meetings

We have some new folks with us today that are unfamiliar with how teams run meetings. Usually these are Slack chats, no Zoom. This was for global bandwidth, language, and other concerns. It still helps folks participate async as well.

Additionally, weโ€™d like to resume including updates from multiple people during team meetings.

If you would like to help facilitate parts of meetings, such as covering a specific news item that you are especially working on or tracking, weโ€™d love to include you.

    Destiny Says

I commented on the agendaย with some items Iโ€™d love raised with the team during the meeting but it looks like we didnโ€™t get to them today. For future reference, is there a better way for folks to engage directly async?ย
Hey folks! We are looking to recruit two more people to be Welcome Wrangles members for October. More information on how to perform this workย is in this handbook page. If youโ€™re interested, please feel free to reach out to me,ย @Amit Patel,ย @Ben Evansย or any one of your Training Team reps!
I also wanted to flag that the meeting calendar shows team meetings every week instead of alternating office hours โ€“ย https://make.wordpress.org/meetings/#trainingโ€“ย can we update this? Also, can we consider an APAC Coffee Hour?ย ย  Iโ€™m happy to host this additional Coffee Hour, or we can enlist another Faculty Member (or hold rotationsย )

    Amit Patel Says

Am in favour of rotation methodology and i am in as wellย

    Hauwa Abashiyaย Says

Destinyย Iโ€™d say update the agenda directly rather than comment. That way we donโ€™t miss it.
I updated the Calendar yesterday and all seemed fine, let me know if that is not the case

    Destinyย Says

Iโ€™d say update the agenda directly rather than comment. That way we donโ€™t miss it.
My comments are longer than bullet points though, and that seems to disrupt the flow of the agenda post which seems to only have headlines. We are ok if I go in to add comments directly into the agenda?I think another thing about doing it this way is that people who are following the post wonโ€™t receive an update if i edit the post, so folks whoโ€™d like to engage async there wonโ€™t receive the appropriate updatesย

    Amit Patelย Says

@Hauwa Abashiya, We did discussed yesterday during APAC faculty meeting regarding above point. Since we will need update revisionsRevisions The WordPress revisions system stores a record of each saved draft or published update. The revision system allows you to see what changes were made in each revision by dragging a slider (or using the Next/Previous buttons). The display indicates what has changed in each revision. for both time zone faculty meeting. So sometimes for any one point, there might be multiple opinions or suggestions. Adding comment will really help to finalize any one of the decision after checking what other faculty team members suggest. I am okay with commenting first as compared to updating post directly. Hope that makes sense.
