Meet 2024 Interim Co-Rep: Jamie Madden

Training Team co-reps @bsanevans @lada7042 and I are very excited to welcome Jamie Madden as interim Training Team co-representative (co-rep).

A few months ago we discussed the idea of an interim lead with the team, and the idea was largely accepted. An interim co-rep is an active Training Team member who fits our documented criteria, and is able to step in to help lead the team when another co-rep is on a leave for longer than 1 month.

Our fellow team repTeam Rep A Team Rep is a person who represents the Make WordPress team to the rest of the project, make sure issues are raised and addressed as needed, and coordinates cross-team efforts. @bsanevans will be away on a three month sabbatical on June 24th, and we will begin onboarding Jamie to the co-representative team starting from this week (June 3rd). He will be staying on as an interim co-rep until the end of the year.

Jamie Madden โ€“ @digitalchild

Jamie Maddenย has been involved in open-source long before WordPressโ€™ first release. He made his first contribution to the Red Hat kernel in 1999. Since then, heโ€™s been contributing to the WordPress documentation, testing, and, of course, Training Team.

Jamie has been an active contributor in the Training Team since July 2022, and joined us as a Faculty Member in September that year lending his Subject Matter Expert and Editor expertise to the team.

We have a full spotlight on Jamie out in this post, so please give it a read if youโ€™d like to learn more about him!

Thank you again Jamie for accepting the call for this role! We look forward to working more closely with you in this capacity.

Proposal: Learn WordPress Content Maintenance Process

In last weekโ€™s Training Team (see Slack thread here) meeting we brought up the question of โ€œwhat content are we obligated to leave on learn and until what version of WordPress do we need to supportโ€.

This question is a critical one as the team is currently working on relaunching Learn WordPress with a fresh new design and streamlined content experience which includes Learning Pathways, Courses, and Lessons. Part of this project includes content deprecation for Tutorials and Lesson Plans, and a push toward presenting content on the site that is new, fresh, and relevant.

Hereโ€™s some takeaways from the discussion on SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/:

  • Content that is not relevant to current coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. features of WordPress should be removed (ex. classic editor)
  • We could view theย WordPress version usage statsย to decide what content is most relevant and should be the focus for our team.
  • We can use WordPress and PHPPHP PHP (recursive acronym for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor) is a widely-used open source general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited for web development and can be embedded into HTML. https://www.php.net/manual/en/preface.php usage metrics to guide our content maintenance process
    • More than 70% of WordPress installs are using either 6.5 or 6.4.
    • Historically the project maintainers have used 5% as the baseline, ie if more than 5% of WordPresses are using that version of PHP, then support it (this currently aligns with the above point).
  • The team should review content every 6-12 months for relevancy

Proposed path forward

  • Adopt 5% baseline for content, which equates to supporting the last two versions of WordPress
  • Create a content maintenance review process that is run twice a year
  • Triage GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the โ€˜pull requestโ€™ where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged by the repository owner. https://github.com/ for content issues which can be closed based on the new baseline

Contribute to this conversation

Hereโ€™s some questions to help keep the conversation going:

  • Do you agree with the proposed 5% baseline for content relevance? Why or why not?
  • Should there be exceptions to the 5% rule in certain circumstances? If so, what might those exceptions be?
  • What are your thoughts on the proposed bi-annual (twice a year) content review process?
  • How can we ensure that the content review process remains thorough and effective?
  • What strategies could we adopt to effectively communicate content deprecations to our learners?
  • What other metrics or data sources could be beneficial for informing our content maintenance process?

Please share your thoughts on this topic by June 13th, 2024

Looking for feedback

  • Would love everyoneโ€™s feedback with the introduction of the Learning Pathways.
    • What content are we obligated to leave on Learn? Ex. Classic editor
    • Until what version do we need to support?

@bsanevans suggests revisiting Learning Pathways annually to ensure they remain current. He believes that content irrelevant to the BlockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience. Editor should be removed, noting that the classic editor was removed from the coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. over five years ago. By reviewing WordPress version usage stats, and focusing on content for versions 6.4 and 6.5, which cover over 70% of installs, we can keep Learn up to date with the majority of use cases.

@psykro suggests yearly updates for Learning Pathways and every six months for newer features like the Site Editor and Interactivity APIAPI An API or Application Programming Interface is a software intermediary that allows programs to interact with each other and share data in limited, clearly defined ways. until they stabilize. He agrees that content related to features removed from the core should be removed. For WordPress versions, he proposes using a 5% usage baseline to determine content support, ensuring we cover versions 6.4 and 6.5 but also older versions if their usage exceeds 5%.

  • Trainingโ€™s 2024 goals โ€“ we asked this question last week and didnโ€™t get any feedback. I added a multiple-choice option if that is easier.
    • Weโ€™d like to send out a survey to the 10,000+ members of theย Meetup.comย Online Workshop groupย to get their input. What do folks think about these three questions?

Thumbnail Creation Project

In preparation for theย relaunch of Learn.WordPress.org and Learning Pathwaysย scheduled for July, we need to create a large quantity of small graphics โ€“ called thumbnails โ€“ to serve as featured images for each course, lesson, and tutorial. This will create a visually appealing site that will entice learners to dive in and get started on their learning journey.

Content Creation

Are you interested in creating content? If so, then creating content related to WordPress 6.5, WordPress 6.5.2 and WordPress 6.5.3 releases are our priority today.

Start by searching for a piece of content youโ€™d like to work on in either the 6.5 project board , 6.5.2 project board, or 6.5.3 project board. Once found, comment on the GitHub issue so that we can assign it to you.

Content Translation

Are you interested in translating content? If so, then translating content related to the Localization Foundation project is our priority today. Do you speak Spanish, Japanese, German, French, Hindi, or Italian? Come help us localize content for either these five or our 8 other languages. There are a few courses about onboarding contributors specifically that will help in the WordPress mentorship program:

You can learn how to get started in content localization in this handbook page.

Content Reviews

Are you interested in editing content? If so, then reviewing content waiting to be published is our priority today.

Start by finding a piece of content to review in our content development board. This GitHub view has filtered all content waiting for reviews before it is published. Follow the teamโ€™s Guidelines for reviewing content and leave your reviews right there in GitHub.

Subject Matter Expert

Aย subject-matter expertย is someone who has extensive knowledge in a particular field or area and can provide advice, guidance, and direction in that subject. If you would like to help vet topics, please visit the Vetting Topic Ideas handbook page.

Triage Developer Issues

Are you a developer interested in working on issues for the Learn website? If so, then working through our Website Development project board is our priority today.

Start by reviewing issues โ€œIn Reviewโ€. Any help you can provide regarding issues โ€œIn Progressโ€ would be great, too. But in general, any attention you can give to any issue would be much appreciated.

If there are enough interested Developers, then we can also create a developer-focused working group so that they can focus on related issues.

@piyopiyofox told us that @psykro wanted to start a conversation on what to do with out of date tutorials based onย this content feedback on one of my original tutorials from 2020. From @psykro

โ€œThe learner came across my (very long) tutorial and shared feedback that the content was out of date. I replied with the updated tutorials for that same content.
However, I did note that the learner came to the tutorial via organic search, so it got me thinking, as we move towards the learning pathways/learn redesign, what should we plan for when it comes to older content.
We should probably do some sort of review as to what content is still coming up in online searches, and then add similar notices to the ones I added on this tutorial, about how there are updated versions.โ€

@west7 likes the notice on the tutorial page. @lada7042 agreed that we need to review older content. Also suggested if we can remove or need to keep the content and add the notice. While @piyopiyofox informed that removing the content from learn website will not remove content from WordPress.tv and YouTube, so we need to have a strategy to coordinate deprecation across all platform.

@cnormandigital suggest that we need to have a routine for updating the videos with the links to new content. @ironnysh suggest two notices, 1. Manually deprecation notice with links to newer versions, 2. Automatic FYI message that will added to every tutorial posted over a year ago.

Get to Know the Training Team’s Guide Program

Did you know the Training team has a program designed to help onboard new team members? The Guide Program matches seasoned contributors with folks who are new to the Training team, helping them navigate the WordPress project and get started contributing.

If youโ€™ve been active with the Training team for at least six months, please consider applying to become a Guide! We need more people to match with new contributors in all parts of the world. At the moment, there is a particular need for folks in the Americas and EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) time zones.

Want to learn more about the Guide program? Join the upcoming online workshop called Get to Know the Training Teamโ€™s Guide Program, where Iโ€™ll have an informal Q&A with Training team members Sumit Singh and Muhibul Haque. Youโ€™ll learn all about the Guide program, find out what makes it so rewarding, and why it might be what youโ€™ve been looking for to help you get more involved with the WordPress project. Hope to see you there!

Contributor Spotlight: Jamie Madden

Welcome to another edition of the Training Teamโ€™sย Contributor Spotlight!
In this series, we introduce one of our many valued contributors and invite you to learn more about their journey.

WordPress contributor Jamie Madden's profile photo

Meet Jamie!

Jamie Madden had been involved in open-source long before WordPressโ€™ first release. He made his first contribution to the Red Hat kernel in 1999. Since then, heโ€™s been contributing to the WordPress documentation, testing, and, of course, Training Team.

โ€œI discovered WordPress when Matt (Mullenweg, WordPress co-founder -R.S.) started posting about it on the B2 Evolution forums. I have been around since the beginning. First, it was for personal projects. By 2006, I was using it professionally with my friend in our small agency, building websites and plugins for niche sites.โ€

An Australian living in Vietnam with his wife, Jamie has over 25 years of experience in IT in software development, infrastructure, backend server admin, customer support, and more. He also founded a multivendor marketplace pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party. for WooCommerce and is now working in the emerging field of AI.

Besides software, Jamie is also a passionate scuba diver with technical certifications who is looking to add dive master to the list soon. โ€œIf Iโ€™m not in the ocean, Iโ€™m on a mountain snowboarding,โ€ he says. โ€œI enjoy learning new things, and my current area of interest is languages. Iโ€™m studying Chinese, Vietnamese, and Spanish and dabbling in a couple more.โ€

What motivated you to start contributing to the open-source project? What drew you to the Training Team?
โ€œIโ€™m passionate about open-source and open standards and have been interested in this since I got involved in IT in the mid-to-late 90s. I have been a tutor, teacher, and trainer on and off over the years, and I find that training is essential when learning to use new open-source tools. It was an opportunity to contribute to the Training Team as a subject expert.โ€

Jamie also regularly reviews lessons and has been part of the teamโ€™s dev-squad since it started. โ€œWe hold regular meetings to triage code-related issues on the Learn website. The #meta-learn channel on the Making WordPress Slack is also where other training folks can come to ask developer-related questions.โ€

When asked about a memorable moment in his journey as a Training Team contributor, he picks a recent one: โ€œI got to co-lead the Training Team Table at this yearโ€™s WordCamp Asia with Wes Theron. Meeting so many faces in person and onboarding new contributors has been a highlight.โ€

Could you share any challenges or obstacles you faced when starting to contribute and how you overcame them?
โ€œThe biggest challenge for entry when contributing to any open-source projectsโ€”no matter if itโ€™s development, marketing, documentation, or other areasโ€”is documentation. The Training Team Handbook, the Developer Resources, and SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/ have been staples in my contributions.โ€

What advice would you give to someone interested in contributing to WordPress?
โ€œEveryone learns differently, so ask questions, be curious, and start building. Thatโ€™s how you learn WordPress and find where you could contribute most.โ€

  • @Ben Evans Received notice from the Sensei LMS pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. For context, these were featuresย #trainingย had requested as part of our content type consolidation efforts around the site relaunch happening this year.
  1. Adding an instructor notes section to lessons
  2. Adding lessons to multiple courses

Based on this information, Iโ€™d like to discuss next steps with the team.

  • Feature 1, I think weโ€™ll will want to work withย #metaย to still create this feature as part of the site redesign. But this should probably be done with as minimal custom development as possible to reduce future maintenance overhead.
  • Feature 2 is something I propose we reassess and consider alternatives for. Technically, I think Learning Pathways could still be launched without this.
  • The lesson page is getting a makeover too.ย Learn Designย (post by Joen) Please add your comments to the post.
  • I am updating the wording in theย Training team contributor badgeย reviewing section to make it more clear and add a link to the review template.
