Today in the Nightly: Inline link toolbar and Press This split button

Here are two cool things that recently landed in trunk and are available right now in the nightly build. Install the nightly. Try them.

Inline Link Toolbar

Being able to visit links straight from the editor means no more copy paste into the browser’s location bar. Nice. Also nice is being able to see the link without popping up the link modal.

One time I tapped X thinking it would dismiss the toolbar.

To test, visit the editor and click/tap into a link. The link toolbar will appear. If it does not, try forcing a browser refresh (Shift+Reload in Chrome on Mac OS). Provide feedack on #32604 or in #core-customize or in reply to this post. Check out this make/flow post for more visuals.

Press This split button

Draft, preview, and standard editor are now in a split button with Publish.

Issues:

Tapping Preview often results in the editor focusing and the keyboard flying up rather than preview. Pressing a youtube video and tapping into the editor before previewing is the most reliable way I’ve found to reproduce this.
Preview opens in a new window. This is really bad mobile usability that is shared by post-new.php.
The publish bar does not persistently remain on the screen. Sometimes it ends up at the end of the big chunk of whitespace that iOSiOS The operating system used on iPhones and iPads. puts below the editor. A lot of scrolling is required to reach it. This seems to happen in association with the preview bug mentioned above.

: Success. Tap Home button to go to home screen.

: Tap into the url scan input

: Tap and hold in the input to paste the url copied from the youtube app.

: Wait for it.

: Tap play to see if this is a live embed view.

: Not playable. Tapping into the editor brings up the keyboard. Tap Done. Next, try tapping Preview. Preview is very hard to tap. Most taps cause the editor to fly up and the keyboard to focus. I see this all the time with YouTube videos, especially after tapping into the editor. After several taps I finally get preview to work.

: Preview is opened in a new window. post-new.php does this too and I consider it really bad mobile usability. Tap Play.

: The video plays and looks good. Tap Done.

: Tap the window switcher to get back to Press This.

: I have several Press This windows. I need to figure out which one to use. First, close the preview so that it is no reused by future preview attempts.

: Pick a window. Hope it is the right one. Tap.

: Whenever I trigger the preview bug mentioned earlier, the bottom bar ends up at the end of the big chunk of space below the editor (this space is peculiar to iOS). The bottom bar is no longer persistent on screen. Tap Publish.

: Feedback.

: Done. Landed on the post page.

: Start. Add test title.

: Flip over to the YouTube app, find a video, click the share button.

: Tap Copy Link.

: Link copied. Switch back to Press This.

: Tap into the Scan field. The Scan button and part of the editor are forced offscreen.

: Paste the youtube link.

: Dismiss the keyboard and behold this. Scan is off screen. Scroll to the right to see it.

: There’s Scan. Tap it.

: Progress indication.

: Scan complete. Note that the title was stomped. That works for me in this situation, but this is possible content destruction. Now, tap the video thumb.

: Video inserted, but hanging off the right side.

: Scroll right to see it all.

: Scrolled to the right. Now, scroll back left.

: Note the cursor hanging out on the left. Scrolling and the cursor are awkward. Okay, enough scrolling around. Tap Done to dismiss the keyboard and then Publish.

: Progress indicator.

: Post published.

Notes:

Tapping into the Scan field triggers a zoom that pushes the Scan button off screen. You must either scroll right or pinch to zoom out to see the button again.

Videos run off the right side of the content area and cause hscroll issues. The only safe places I found to hscroll are the title field and the editor button bar. I could not hscroll when swiping in the editor or in the sideloaded image preview strip.

I’ve liked the automatic quote pull in most situations, but there were a couple where I had to select and cut. I edited the quote in the flowFlow Flow is the path of screens and interactions taken to accomplish a task. It’s an experience vector. Flow is also a feeling. It’s being unselfconscious and in the zone. Flow is what happens when difficulties are removed and you are freed to pursue an activity without forming intentions. You just do it.
Flow is the actual user experience, in many ways. If you like, you can think of flow as a really comprehensive set of user stories. When you think about user flow, you’re thinking about exactly how a user will perform the tasks allowed by your product.Flow and Context
above because of ellipsis in the middle of a sentence.

After publication, the published page is shown. I like seeing content in its real context after publishing, but I also want to get back into press this so I can Scan and post again. We’re optimizing for a one-way, single-shot sort of flow right now, but let’s keep the possibility of chaining in mind.

Since I have cloudup set to copy links to the clipboard after every screenshot, my bookmarklet selection would get stomped as I went about business in the bookmark manager. Flipping back to the press this tools screen and doing Cmd+c put the bookmarklet back into the clipboard without having to click anything. Once back in the bookmark manager, however, the Add Page operation cancels out and any thing you have input so far, such as the bookmark name, are lost. for new Press This is better than the old flow thanks to not having to right click to expose the bookmarklet text area, but cut-and-paste is not very friendly in either case. New Press This requires an extra click to highlight the textarea after it is exposed. Old press this shows and highlights the textarea with one right click. New press this requires left clicking the Copy Press This Bookmarklet button and then clicking into the textarea. New Press This is much more discoverable, however.

: This interface seems to deal exclusively with sideloaded images. I can’t find a way to the media modal to upload from camera roll.

: Tap into content and scroll down to check the post. Placeholder text still in the body. Perhaps because an image was immediately inserted before visiting the editor. Tap Done to dismiss the keyboard.

: I left the placeholder and tapped Publish. The icons grey and there is a pause for a couple seconds before the blue progress line appears at the top of the browser. I didn’t get a screenshot of this.

: Dumped in the post page after publish.

: The editor is cleared out. Click Edit Post.

: The Press This pop up dismisses and the full editor opens up in the tab occupied by the youtube page that I pressed.

New:

: Start. Click the Press This bookmarklet.

: Click Save Draft.

: The Press This popup goes away and the editor opens up in the parent. This means I have to back history out of the edit session to get back to the source page I was pressing. Maybe the editor should open in a new tab so that the source material is not obscured.
