Becoming a Regional/Country Mentor Lead
Lead mentors are selected by the WordPress Credits admins based on their track record as active mentors and their background in both community and education. You can put yourself forward by pinging us on the Make WordPress Slack. We may also reach out to you directly if you’re already on our radar.
Responsibilities
- Recruit and onboard local mentors – coordinate with the WP Credits admins to identify, invite, and onboard qualified mentors in your region
- Serve as the first point of contact for local mentors – answer questions, escalate blockers, and maintain active communication channels
- Monitor mentor activity – keep an eye on whether mentors are engaging with their student contributors and flag any inactivity early
- Foster a sense of team among local mentors – participate and organize occasionally monthly Mentor Huddles to align mentors on goals, share learnings, and maintain consistency
- Report upward – provide regular updates to the WP Credits admins on regional participation, challenges, and outcomes
- Support institutional relationships – work with the admins on connecting universities or schools in your region to the Credits program, where applicable
- Advocate for your region – surface cultural or logistical context that the global team should factor into program decisions
- Maintain documentation – ensure local onboarding materials, processes, or translations stay current
- Vet incoming mentor applications – review applications from prospective mentors in your region, assess their suitability, and make recommendations or approvals to the admin team
- Track and process student graduations – monitor student from the region, the lead mentor is responsible for, check the student contribution progress and flag or confirm when they’ve met the requirements to graduate from the program
- Approve WordPress Credits Certifications – review students from the region, the lead mentor is responsible for, if the students completed the WP Credits program and formally approve certification, ensuring contributions meet the required standards before submission
