7.0 Documentation Overhaul
Some WCEU Contributor Day attendees worked on the 7.0 docs review; comments may be coming in. At least one block Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience. article page has outdated screenshots — not yet confirmed which one or whether an issue has been filed. @estelaris plans to focus entirely on the overhaul (writing/testing/updating) next week, with a goal of making progress before 7.1. WP Credits students will be asked to help review/test/validate updated block articles.
Open Questions
@kjoyner raised several questions:
- Videos are auto-converting to VideoPress on upload — is this expected/recent?
- Estela and Velda will look into this.
- Should the
show_in_rest suggestion for custom post types in the Query Loop The Loop is PHP code used by WordPress to display posts. Using The Loop, WordPress processes each post to be displayed on the current page, and formats it according to how it matches specified criteria within The Loop tags. Any HTML or PHP code in the Loop will be processed on each post. https://codex.wordpress.org/The_Loop block be included in HelpHub docs? (Currently noted in issue #1424)
- Estela says let’s not add to HelpHub.
- Should items in lists have periods at the end?
- We usually add a period at the end of any sentences in lists, but not to sentence fragments.
- Inconsistency in how the Block Inserter “(+)” is referenced across docs — the style guide suggests dropping “the” and “button” and just using “click XYZ”
Translations / Roadmap
@supernovia flagged interesting info from a WCEU Q&A session about translations. @estelaris needs to write a clear roadmap first, and have Mary and Matias review it before sharing more widely.
WordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. US (August 16–19)
@supernovia plans to attend and asked if a docs table is needed. @clk87 is also expected to attend; plan is to divide efforts across tables where students can help. @estelaris is unsure about traveling to the US but can provide instructions remotely. @awetz583 and @supernovia both noted they’ll have some vacation around 7.1 RC1 timeframe; @awetz583 expects to be back around August 11.
Action Items
- @supernovia — Write up meeting notes & look into VideoPress conversions
- @estelaris — Write WCEU summary + proposals/roadmap for next year; coordinate with Mary and Matias on translations roadmap
- @awetz583 — Catch up on 7.0 documentation feedback from WCEU later this week
- Everyone — Keep an eye out for WCEU Contributor Day comments on block article issues
