Highlights for the last two weeks:

  • BlockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience. Editor: We fixed issues with Gallery block not being rendered properly for users using old WordPress versions, missing translations on Android for specific locales, missing alt text when inserting images. As well as, fixed issue related to post preview adjusting for device orientation changes, and improved the performance of the RichText component.
  • Other Projects: Support HEIC/ HEIF files in media picker on Android.

  • Other Projects: We made an improvement to the media picker on Android, and fixed an issue on iOS that prevented the site name to be updated from the Site Settings screen.

Editor: Made a significant improvement to the performance of blocks that use RichText, we added featured imageFeatured image A featured image is the main image used on your blog archive page and is pulled when the post or page is shared on social media. The image can be used to display in widget areas on your site or in a summary list of posts. settings to Latest Posts block, we prevented incorrect notices displaying when quickly switching tasks, and we fixed a crash in Quote block v2. We also improved the post preview experience on Android.
  • Other Projects: On Android we fixed an upload failure for non-latin filenames and a bug resulting in blurred featured images. We also fixed a media picker accessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers).   • Infrastructure: Completed the Android Depedency Update project that aimed to update some critical dependencies in order to allow developers to use the latest tooling.

Editor: We added a GIF badge in Image blocks, fixed the index start and reversed mode for the List block, and did some small refinements to the media upload error message.
  • Other projects: Fixed an issue preventing users from changing profile pictures and an issue preventing the new password input keyboard from being dismissed on iOS. We also fixed a long-standing TransactionTooLargeException crash that could happen when accessing post history details.
  • Infrastructure: Continued migrating various projects to use BuildKite. Almost completed the Android Depency Update project that aimed to update some critical dependencies in order to allow developers to use the latest tooling.

Editor: Integration tests added to Gallery and Social icons blocks.
  • Other projects: Fixed a media issue on Android when the device is rotated while taking a picture. On iOS, a UIUI UI is an acronym for User Interface - the layout of the page the user interacts with. Think ‘how are they doing that’ and less about what they are doing. bug causing copy link notifications to pile up was fixed. Also, made the messages for login errors more self-explaining.
  • Infrastructure: We worked on Gradle and AGP upgrades.

Think ‘how are they doing that’ and less about what they are doing. flickering issue when selecting page designs on iOS, and fixed an issue with sharing media from other apps on Android. Also, fixed an issue with comment snippets incorrectly shown.
  • Infrastructure: Started working on updating Android deps (gradle, AGP, Kotlin).
