Highlights for the last two weeks:

  • BlockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience. Editor: Pullquote block placeholder on Android fixed and block now released on WPAndroid too (was previously on WPiOS only).
  • Full Site Editing: Shipped: Wide/full width support for Group, Cover, Image blocks; Rounded image support for Image block. Progress on the Layout picker and link to existing content.
  • Other Projects: More Unified Login & Signup flows are shipping in WPiOS 15.7. Android Media Picker now supports extra file types, has search, and UIUI UI is an acronym for User Interface - the layout of the page the user interacts with. Think ‘how are they doing that’ and less about what they are doing. updates.

Editor: Shipped fix for editing classic blocks using the unsupported block editor. Began adding offline support for inserting mentions.
  • Full Site Editing: Shipped Gallery image editing, Navigation inside BottomSheet, Slider improvements to reflect changes immediately, Undo/Redo improvements. Progress on the Layout picker, wide/full-width support.
  • Other Projects: Unified Login & Signup is in progress for the iOS app. On Android we analyzed the results after launch and we’re happy to see more self-hosted users successfully adding a site to the app.
  • Infrastructure: Decreased trend in crashes for the iOS app thanks to sustained maintenance efforts. For the Android app, we integrated encrypted logging, and implemented automated delivery of new app screenshots.

  • Other Projects: Unified Login & Signup is in progress for the iOS app. Reader Improvements phase 2 is in progress and notifications permissions improvements are done.
  • Infrastructure: Decreased trend in crashes for the iOS app thanks to sustained maintenance efforts. For the Android app, we integrated encrypted logging, and implemented automated delivery of new app screenshots.

  • Full Site Editing: Image editing in Cover blocks shipped, image editing in Gallery is in progress. General improvements in Media-Text and Cover blocks. New feature to link to existing content and new percentage settings in the Column block.
  • Other Projects: Unified Login & Signup is shipping with version 15.4 of the Android app. Reader improvements project in progress. The work on audio and document upload has started.
  • Infrastructure: Encrypted logging implementation is finished. It will be released with the next versions of the apps. Release builds are now automated in continuous integration for the Android app.

Editor: The monorepo has been merged and mobile E2E tests are running on all GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler. It uses ‘blocks’ to add richness rather than shortcodes, custom HTML etc. https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/ pull requests. We made more progress on the unsupported blocks fallback and @-mentions. Added blocks, words, and chars counters.

Editor: We’ve been working on bypassing a tooling problem, and have made major progress on providing a fallback for unsupported blocks.
  • Full Site Editing: Color settings for Button and Cover blocks have shipped. We’ve updated existing layouts to use new blocks.
  • Other Projects: On iOS we’ve streamlined the coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. navigation in the app, moving the controls to update your settings and create new posts and pages. We’ve also been working on a range of stability improvements.
  • Infrastructure: We continued to iterate and improve some of our core processes, and helped investigate crashes and improve our testing setup.
