Highlights for the last two weeks:

  • BlockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience. Editor: Block transforms (paragraph -> heading, image -> media and text, etc), and accessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers).   • Full Site Editing: Fixed a crash on the page layout picker when resuming from background, unsupported “space-between” justify option removed from Buttons block.

  • Full Site Editing: Converted previews on page creation to use web views on iOS, fixed memory leak on layout picker selector on iOS, fixed bug allowing desktop preview horizontal scrolling on some Android devices.
  • Other projects: Login prologue updates in iOS, and various bug fixes. Also, white headers shipped in v17.0 on iOS.
  • Infrastructure: finished the gutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler. Gutenberg update, gutenberg-mobile CI deployment, new translation tooling and WordPress Android integration. WordPress iOS release builds are now triggered by API calls.

The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler.   • Full Site Editing: Worked on iOS mobile previews and fixed an issue with media uploads with ongoing uploads.

The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler. Editor: Added ability to move blocks to top/bottom via long-pressing the block mover icons and removed the info popup on editor start.
  • Full Site Editing: Miscellaneous bug fixes and legacy code cleanup.
  • Other Projects: Menu filters on WPiOS now remember their previous selection when switching menu items. Continued efforts to update WPiOS minimum build target to iOS 13.
  • Infrastructure:  Continued work on Android Modularization and began efforts to use Swift packages in WPiOS.

Editor: Added support for the file block, fixed an issue with removing the heading block when it was empty, improved gallery block uploads when the editor is closed, and added the duplicate post functionality.
  • Full Site Editing: We refined the homepage picker and we fixed previewing the homepage from the editor.
  • Other Projects: Several bug fixes and small improvements across the aps.
  • Infrastructure:  We enabled an iOS localization linter.

Editor/Full Site Editing: We’ve updated the Separator block to extend to the edges, and added support for background and text color in the Group, Paragraph, and Quote blocks.
  • Other Projects: We added categories to the pre-publishing sheet and we fixed a lot of bugs all over the apps.
  • Infrastructure: We investigated existing issues with localization in WordPress iOS and GlotPress tooling, and we made numerous tooling fixes and updates for localization, build issues, and more.
