Headlines / Community updates

This is where news that are relevant or good to know for the team from across the community are brought up and shared.

Troubleshooting and Site Health Tools plugins

The Health Check pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party has now been “decoupled” (the features are still there, but they will live standalone moving forward).

This means that the Tools menu has been moved to the appropriately named Site Health Tools plugin, while Troubleshooting Mode has been so lucky as to snag the (surprisingly unused) Troubleshooting plugin name.

So moving forward, we should recommend them over the Health Check plugin. Take note of the required WordPress and PHPPHP PHP (recursive acronym for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor) is a widely-used open source general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited for web development and can be embedded into HTML. https://www.php.net/manual/en/preface.php. versions, these have been updated, so the Health Check plugin will be kept as a solution for those unable or unwilling to update for now, but we give no guarantee or promise of their continued long term support.

Crowdsourcing /support

As discussed earlier, we would like to look at options for a landing page on the top level for WordPress.org/support, so let’s crowdsource some ideas!

Checking in with international liaisons

This is the section where we reach out to the non-English speaking parts of our community, to see how they are doing, if there’s anything we can help each other with, or just interesting things going on that it would be nice to share with others.

There’s no requirements for previous participation or “fame” to share here, anyone is welcome, and we encourage newcomers to participate!

Unable to make the meeting, or maybe meetings just aren’t your thing? We would still love to hear how things are going in other non-English speaking parts of our community. Please feel free to let us know via the comment section below, in your own time, if there is anything you’d like to share, any questions or concerns you have, or just to let us know you’re doing OK!

We will make a habit of putting this callout with every agenda post going forward, so that everyone has a chance to join in.

Support Team Meeting – September 5th

The weekly support meeting will be held on Thursday, September 5th 2024, 17:00 UTC in #forums on SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/.. (a Slack account is required)

The WordPress.orgWordPress.org The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https://wordpress.org//support page

Currently, if you visit https://WordPress.org/support, you are redirected to the documentation page.

The team are aware this has been the source of some contention from many, and are looking to remedy it, to do so we need to make some decisions;

  • Is there a wish to have a proper landing page here?
  • Should the current page from https://WordPress.org/support/forums be used and display it here?
  • Is there anything missing from the forum landing page if it is the chosen way forward
  • What wishes are there for a landing page if that is the route decided on

If there is a desire to do something more with it, some wire-frames or mock-ups and ideas for what that is will be required, this may prolong the process somewhat, but may allow the team to do more with the page long term?

There is an existing ticket for reclaiming the top level directory at https://meta.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/6841, if the team chooses to do more with it, another ticket will be created as a pre-requisite for 6841 so that things happen in the correct order 🙂

And let’s not forget the rosetta sites in all of this, who currently display the forums page as the landing page.

Announcement of a new Support Team meeting time

This post is to announce a change in the timing of our regular Support Team meetings.

The next meeting will be held at on Thursday, April 11, 2024, at 20:00 UTC in #forums on SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/. (a Slack account is required) or at https://make.wordpress.org/support/chat/. Subsequent meetings will be held every 2 weeks at the same time.

If it’s been a while since you joined a support meeting, or you’re thinking of joining for the first time (welcome!) here’s a few things for you to know.

  • Ordinarily, the agenda for the meeting will be published on the Monday preceding the meeting itself. Y’all are welcome to suggest agenda items in the comments of that post.
  • Everyone is welcome to attend! Help out answering questions in the forums and want to get more involved? Want to see how things in the Support Team work? Whatever your reason, we’d love to have you join us.
  • Decisions on items (which are added to the agenda) are made by those who are in attendance at the meeting, with any comments on the agenda itself taken into account.

The agenda for our next meeting will be out on April 8th and I look forward to seeing you all on April 11th!

22nd February Support Team meeting

The support meeting will be held on Thursday, February 22 2024, 19:00 UTC in #forums on SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. Commercial support quality in reviews

Following on from the recent change to guidelines around reviews of Commercial/Pro plugins we need to discuss and make a decision about whether quality of support received for Commercial/Pro plugins is a valid part of a review.

Support Team plans for 2024

Let’s discuss my proposal of some things to work on in 2024 to make the Support Team more sustainable for the long term, and better connect with our contributors who work in the Forums.

Firmer language around links in reviews

Even though it shouldn’t be possible for link – some folks do manage to do so. At the moment our wording around that guideline (in the form itself) is a little soft. Should we have a clear mention in the Guidelines themselves, and also update the wording in the form to be clearer?

New meeting on APAC time

We recently discussed the possibility of having an Asia-Pacific (APAC) meeting, and @jordesign offered to do it next week. Any specific blockers for doing so? I feel like we only need to update the meeting calendar.

Any specific time schedule that would work well? Maybe 10 am UTC?

Matrix is becoming a reality really soon

Matrix is becoming a reality really soon. Do we still have blockers for the team in this direction?

Maybe we need to change the slug for the chat https://make.wordpress.org/support/chat/ as @clorith suggested?

WordPress 6.4 BetaBeta A pre-release of software that is given out to a large group of users to trial under real conditions. Beta versions have gone through alpha testing in-house and are generally fairly close in look, feel and function to the final product; however, design changes often occur as part of the process.-3

RCRelease Candidate A beta version of software with the potential to be a final product, which is ready to release unless significant bugs emerge.-1 is right around the corner, so please help test WordPress 6.4 if you can!

New support guidelines

The process for the updated support guidelines is finished, and feedback has been incorporated where applicable.

As there were no major concerns with the timing proposed in the agenda, and given the long feedback period given, the plan remains to publish them fully on the upcoming Monday, October 16th. The publication will be accompanied by a post here on make/support to help signal boost the update, and add some specific clarification that is relevant to theme and pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. APAC friendly meeting times

There’s been some talk of a desire for more Asia-Pacific (APAC) friendly support meeting times. This is something the team has wanted to do, and although previous attempts lacked volunteers in the area with the time available to do so, we now have some volunteers, and are hoping to get that under way. More information will be posted about this once the involved volunteers have had a chance to plan it out!

Checking in with international liaisons

None of the teams international liaisons had any concerns or special events/news to share at this time.

New Support Guidelines

With the feedback period for the new support guidelines over, and the feedback having been incorporated into the text, it’s time to put them live. Let’s discuss the timing for this, as some of the changes will impact how some things are reviewed by the moderation team, but will only be applicable to new content (due to the excessive amount of overhead involved in going through old content).

The proposed time for the new guidelines to go live is be Monday October 16th.

Feedback on the proposed changes to the support guidelines

The window to provide feedback on the new Support Guidelines is rapidly approaching its end, so remember to provide feedback if you have any before October 1st!

New workflow for moderators when working with reported topics

The process surrounding reported topics have started getting enhanced, with a new way to track who helps the community out by reporting things (privately, of course), a means of looking into your past reports, and getting direct responses tied to your reports.

This allows moderators to provide anonymous feedback to the user on their report, and also ensures taht those who create a report know that they have been both viewed, and resolved in some manner.
