AccessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accessibility) Statement Final Draft

“Accessibility is the degree to which a product, device, service, or environment is available to as many people as possible.” Cynthia Waddell

WordPress is founded on the principles of an inclusive community and democratization of publishing. The development of WordPress, based on standards and best practices, offers a constantly improving environment with flexibility and choice. We promise to always work toward creating an environment accessible to as many people as possible, inclusive of technology and ability.

We want community involvement and welcome feedback. Your comments help us enhance the accessibility of WordPress.

Projects To Be Followed

During the remainder of the meeting we discussed the projects we believe should be followed by the WordPress Accessibility Team. We agreed that we have too few people on the team to follow all these projects, but we compiled the following list.

Meeting September 11, 2013

We edited an accessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accessibility) statement.

At the head of the statement is a quote by Cynthia Waddell: “Accessibility is the degree to which a product, device, service, or environment is available to as many people as possible.”

[Then comes the statement:]

The development of WordPress, based on standards and best practices, offers a constantly improving environment with flexibility and choice. We promise to always work toward creating an environment accessible to as many people as possible, inclusive of technology and ability.

[The statement is followed by resources and contact information.]

New Team Reps — Scheduling Monthly Chat

CoreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. posted yesterday that @dh-shredder will be the rep, so now we have a rep lined up for all teams. First order of business is to set a team repTeam Rep A Team Rep is a person who represents the Make WordPress team to the rest of the project, make sure issues are raised and addressed as needed, and coordinates cross-team efforts. chat time for monthly chats. Since the previous time was chosen with different reps, I don’t think it’s fair to make the new reps use that same time without being given the opportunity to check for standing conflicts (like other chats, standing meetings, etc). The previous time was every second Tuesday at 16:00 UTC (i.e., today in just over an hour). Since that’s not much notice for all the new reps, I suggest we don’t use this day/time combo by default but see if there’s a time that works for all reps. Allow about an hour for the meeting, once a month.

Can all the new team reps reply to this message today with the following information:

  • Your time zone
  • Preference for business hours/after work/either
  • Preference for weekday/weekend/either
  • Any standing time blackouts — other team chats, specific time-based parenting responsibilities, standing appts, etc — that you would definitely not be available (if this list is long or you’re uncomfortable posting about your schedule here, you can also email/skype/irc me to pass on the info)

Pinging:

Based on responses will post tomorrow with a repeating day/time combo for chats for the coming three months.

Sister Projects

At the community summit, we talked about finding a way to bridge the gap between the contributor groups here and the communities working on sister projects like bbPressbbPress Free, open source software built on top of WordPress for easily creating forums on sites. https://bbpress.org., BuddyPress, and GlotPress, which are all considered “official” but are still separate software projects (despite lots of personnel overlap). One of the suggestions we talked about was having a rep from each project report here and join team reps for chats etc, but we never really moved forward on that.

I’m going to reach out to the leads of each project and see what they think about participating more closely with the wordpress.orgWordPress.org The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https://wordpress.org/ contributor groups represented here. In the meantime, current reps, could you discuss with your teams and see if anyone has any concerns about this idea? We’ll take a yea/nay vote next week on how to proceed.

New Team Reps

For teams that sent in two names, per the previous discussion only one is going to be the listed rep for these next 3 months. Having a backup that can fill in if you’re sick can be at the discretion of the team dynamic how you want that to work.

Why is accessibility listed differently? At previous team repTeam Rep A Team Rep is a person who represents the Make WordPress team to the rest of the project, make sure issues are raised and addressed as needed, and coordinates cross-team efforts. discussions we talked about only having team reps for groups responsible for specific products/things, and having groups that were more aspect-based that might contribute to multiple product teams (such as accessibility and UIUI UI is an acronym for User Interface - the layout of the page the user interacts with. Think ‘how are they doing that’ and less about what they are doing.) get their reporting done via the teams where the specific actions were relevant, so that they’d be more hooked in to the main groups and the updates would be grouped by product. We can discuss this again if feelings have changed, but in the meantime I’ll go ahead and list Accessibility here as a standalone until such time that we do the legwork necessary to make sure their updates are being covered by the product teams.

I’ll get in touch with each team rep this week to confirm their understanding of the role, and will re-write the description on the about page.

Housekeeping: Team Reps

Hi everyone. Back in October, we said the Team RepTeam Rep A Team Rep is a person who represents the Make WordPress team to the rest of the project, make sure issues are raised and addressed as needed, and coordinates cross-team efforts. experiment would include elections every 6 months, with the term that started in January ending in June, which would mean its time (or really, a bit past time) to elect new reps. We also said we would review the system first so that if we wanted to try changing/improving anything we could do it in the next round (meaning now). I’ve been talking a lot with other open sourceOpen Source Open Source denotes software for which the original source code is made freely available and may be redistributed and modified. Open Source **must be** delivered via a licensing model, see GPL. projects about how they organize their contributor teams to see if there are any successful models we could swipe from, and I’m sure you all have thoughts based on the past 6 months about how we could improve our community structure and support, so let’s start that discussion. In the comments, note if there’s anything you thought has been especially positive in the first round of team reps and having this site, and/or anything that you think could be improved moving forward.

Posted on training group blog to see if they want to be standalone or join forces with community outreach since there’s been no activity on the training group blog for 3 weeks.

Current team reps: it would be worth your commenting on the post on your blog as to whether or not you are interested in the role this time around (especially for people who may be interested in repping for one of the other teams they’re involved in).
