Highlights for the last two weeks:

  • BlockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience. Editor: Added Help menu option that teaches users about the block editor. Fixed an issue with the slash inserter suggestion icons.
  • Full Site Editing: Shipped improvements to the Color settings.
  • Other projects: Time selection for Blogging Reminders, and “Share WordPress with a Friend” feature! On WPiOS we addressed visual glitches with the Site Settings screen scroll performance, the Reader’s featured images, and deleted comments. We also fixed an issue that prevented plugins to be scrollable and actionable on iOS.
  • Infrastructure: More work on the CI migrationMigration Moving the code, database and media files for a website site from one server to another. Most typically done when changing hosting companies. project, and upgraded various projects to Gradle 7.

The image can be used to display in widget areas on your site or in a summary list of posts. via the image block is now available on iOS too.
  • Full Site Editing: Global Style Support was shipped on Android too, and an adjustment on the image size of Theme Images was made for more optimal download speeds on Android and iOS.
  • Other projects: Improvements in how comments are shown on the Reader and My Site. Fixed the issue where the “Contact support” and “My Tickets” buttons weren’t working properly.
  • Infrastructure: Improve fastlane scripts consistency among the repos, work on the automated login tests, the CI migrationMigration Moving the code, database and media files for a website site from one server to another. Most typically done when changing hosting companies. to Buildkite and WP Android modularization.

Editor: Initial iteration of the Embed Block.
  • Full Site Editing: Global Style Support for FSE sites was shipped on iOS (there is an ongoing investigation on Android before turning the feature on). We also fixed a UIUI UI is an acronym for User Interface - the layout of the page the user interacts with. Think ‘how are they doing that’ and less about what they are doing./UXUX UX is an acronym for User Experience - the way the user uses the UI. Think ‘what they are doing’ and less about how they do it. issue with how the Blank Canvas theme is handled in the app.
  • Other projects: Comment swipe to moderate options no longer appear for authors and contributors. Fix on iOS for a crash on start when Blog.version is not a string.
  • Infrastructure: Continued to develop the new CI system, improved translation tooling and began Phase 2 of Android modularized architecture. We also made progress with WPiOS login tests.

Editor: Rolled out (50% of users) a block picker tooltip inviting users to add blocks. Fixed some bugs related to border radius settings and slash inserter.
  • Other projects: Blogging Reminders on both Android and iOS, and reinstated the blue iOS and Android icons after Pride month ending. Fixed a crash on Android when uploading webp images.
  • Infrastructure: Good progress on the new CI project and using BuildKite, the WordPress login tests and continued to fix and improve our release tools.

Editor: We fixed a Gallery block caption issue with text formatting as well as a scrolling bug within the editor on iOS and the Floating toolbar.
  • Other projects: We fixed “What is my site address?” dialog image, and a layout issue with the new My Site headerHeader The header of your site is typically the first thing people will experience. The masthead or header art located across the top of your page is part of the look and feel of your website. It can influence a visitor’s opinion about your content and you/ your organization’s brand. It may also look different on different screen sizes. on iOS. On both platforms we updated the icons to Spectrum to celebrate Pride Month. Fixed a few issues in the Reader.
  • Infrastructure: Removed Lint baseline file, improvements in iOS UIUI UI is an acronym for User Interface - the layout of the page the user interacts with. Think ‘how are they doing that’ and less about what they are doing. test infrastructure and progress on establishing the new CI infra.

  • Other projects: On Android, we’ve shipped several optimizations to handle large text.

Editor: Fixed an iOS issue that was causing the editor to freeze in landscape mode under certain conditions.
  • Full Site Editing: Resolved an issue that was causing rendering problems in the color picker.
  • Other projects: Several large text and localization fixes in iOS.
  • Infrastructure: We moved all the Android libraries which used Bintray to S3 and moved all the CI Mac Minis to Big Sur. We started investigating options for the new CI infrastructure.

The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers).
