Marketing Team Update: The first half of 2023

This update summarizes the work done by the Make WordPress Global Marketing Team from January 1, 2023, to August 14, 2023. Notes for the weekly Marketing team meetings can be found on the Marketing team blog with the tag #meeting-notes.

The primary work of the marketing team is done through GitHub issues on the Marketing Team Repository under the official WordPress organization GitHub account. In this time period, the team:

  • Opened 44 new GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the ‘pull request’ where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged be the repository owner. issues (not including the weekly meeting management issues)
  • Initiated 5 GitHub discussions
  • Closed 24 GitHub issues

  • #WP20 From Blogs to Blocks Campaign: The team curated and executed a 20-day campaign celebrating the WordPress 20th Anniversary. This campaign highlighted the contributions made to WordPress over its two decades, creating a sense of community pride and engagement. (#220)
  • Get Involved tab in WordPress About Page: With the Marketing Team’s assistance, a new “Get Involved” tab was successfully integrated into the WordPress Dashboard About page in WordPress 6.3, providing a strong call to action for individuals to explore opportunities for involvement in WordPress. (
  • Contribute Page Development: The team played a pivotal role in creating, developing, and crafting the content for the /contribute page, which serves as a landing page for the “Find Your Team” call to action on the Get Involved tab, and for individuals seeking ways to contribute to Make WordPress, including at WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. Contributor Days. (
  • Contributor Onboarding Tool: The team facilitated the development of and updating the content for the Contributor Onboarding Tool, which provides an interactive way for new contributors to join and participate in WordPress via the Contribute page. (#264)
  • Amplification Form: A GitHub issue template was created to facilitate promotion and awareness of Make WordPress team activity, calls for action, and requests for feedback (#140).
  • People of WordPress: Six “People of WordPress” profiles were published, highlighting contributors to the WordPress community in order to foster a culture of appreciation and recognition.
  • This Month in WordPress Newsletter: The team actively contributed to the community by publishing five editions of the “This Month in WordPress” newsletter, keeping the community informed about the latest developments and initiatives.

  • Robin, Sé Reed, and Santana Inniss assumed Team RepTeam Rep A Team Rep is a person who represents the Make WordPress team to the rest of the project, make sure issues are raised and addressed as needed, and coordinates cross-team efforts. positions in January 2023.
  • Santana went on leave in April 2023; officially departed the team in June 2023
  • In July 2023, Nyasha Greene joined as a new Marketing Team Rep

  • The team reps standardized the meeting format to provide an opportunity for the team to review and conduct focused discussion on open GitHub issues

  • With this 2023 post, the Marketing Team intends resume posting regular updates.
    • We will start with the precedent of posting a team update a minimum of twice a year.
    • Our goal is to publish standardized quarterly updates (January-March, April-June, July-September, and October-December) beginning in 2024
