# Support Team Update for February 6th

Items discussed at this week’s support #wordpress-sfd meetupMeetup All local/regional
gatherings that are officially a part of the WordPress world but are not WordCamps
are organized through [https://www.meetup.com/](https://www.meetup.com/). A meetup
is typically a chance for local WordPress users to get together and share new ideas
and seek help from one another. Searching for ‘WordPress’ on meetup.com will help
you find options in your area.. This was the first meetup that wasn’t followed by
Docs and the meetup went a little longer than usual.

### Support team repTeam Rep A Team Rep is a person who represents the Make WordPress team to the rest of the project, make sure issues are raised and addressed as needed, and coordinates cross-team efforts.

I’ve been re-upped as the [support team rep](https://make.wordpress.org/support/2014/02/time-to-choose-the-next-team-rep/).

### Use the wp-forums list to communicate

Sometimes members go off the rails and need a timeout but there are limits. When
a member repeatedly sails through those limits then it’s fine to blockBlock Block
is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form
the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines
concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and
embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience. that user. Just
remember to use the wp-forums list to communicate about it.

That doesn’t mean BAM! block members for everything and if there’s a topic that
needs to be brought up then the list is the place to go. While it may be tempting
to feed the troll it never works out and neither does posting while angry.

If there’s a topic that you need a break from or someone’s crossed the line and
has been blocked (or coded) please inform the list. That’s what the list is there
for.

### There’s a #worpress-social channel! Who knew?

OK that’s not how that item was meant to be titled but the official #wordpress channel
has apparently gotten a little chatty.

Keeping the IRC channel light hearted and friendly is cool and appreciated. And
there’s nothing that says _Thou Shall Only Keep The Channel On Topic_. But it is
an official support channel and it’s good to keep it so that someone popping in
can ask their question and get an answer that won’t be lost in the chat.

If you’d like to socialize (who doesn’t?) then please consider dropping by the #
wordpress-social channel.

While on the topic of IRC Kenshino and Clorith brought up the repeat offender who
has been harassing IRC users and posting inappropriate language. The outcome was
that the #wordpress channel will no longer accept users from TOR proxies. You can
read about that at [this make/support post](https://make.wordpress.org/support/2014/02/tor-proxies-in-wordpress/).
If anyone is impacted by that change then please leave a comment on that post.

Except for that repeat offender and an occasional slow-to-understand user Clorith
reported that IRC has been good this past week.

### Using URLURL A specific web address of a website or web page on the Internet, such as a website’s URL www.wordpress.org shortners in the forums

This isn’t quite a problem and is more of an FYI. I came across a user who had posted
a bunch of links to commercial products as a reply. The shortlinks made a stop at
an affiliate link before sending the member onto the vendor site. Affiliate links
are not allowed in the forums.

Unless there’s a good reason or it’s coming from someone trustworthy (I’m looking
in [@ipstenu](https://profiles.wordpress.org/ipstenu/)‘s direction just now) then
the real URLs ought to be used. It’s just more transparent IMHO.
