WordPress.tv Moderator Update – Week 18

This week has been rather slow for us. We’ve only published 6 videos! 2 Videos were “How-to” and 4 were from WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. Atlanta. We’ve encountered some issues with audio so, it’s slow going to get WordCamp Atlanta out.

I’m making a personal goal of watching 3 today. Until next week folks!

WordPress.tv Moderator Update – Week 17

First off, I failed at posting this last week. So I apologize for not sending out an update last week. We didn’t have much last week though, so holding off till this week made sense. 🙂

This week we’ve published 14 videos!! Most if not all of them are from WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. Atlanta. Our new process of letting moderators schedule videos to be published is working wonderfully and we’re able to publish videos out now as we view them and add the appropriate information, slides, description, etc.

And that’s pretty much it! Until next week, I’m signing out!

WordPress.tv Moderator Update: Week 15

Not much has been happening in terms of videos being uploaded the past couple of weeks. With Miami, San Diego, and Atlanta just having finished, we expect to start seeing those videos get uploaded and published.

Since launching “Get Involved” a few weeks ago, we’ve had a couple of videos that didn’t meet the guidelines. It might be helpful to review those again before creating or submitting your videos. We’d love to see more meetups and screencasts. A few moderators are working on a list of what they are going to create. They’ll be posting on our P2, if you’d like to check it out.

This Week:

  • Since our last update we’ve published 8 videos (5 How-To, 1 WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. A meetup is typically a chance for local WordPress users to get together and share new ideas and seek help from one another. • We discussed publishing policy amongst moderators
  • Started creating a list of possible How-To videos moderators can help create

WordPress.tv Moderator Update: Week 12

It has been a bit of a slow week in terms of videos, but we expect that to change soon as the high season for WordCamps gets in full swing. Spring is in the air, and big camps in San Diego, Miami, and Nashville are not far behind!

Since “Get Involved” was launched last week, we have already started receiving our first public video submissions! It’s great to see more variety in the videos we publish, and we can’t wait for this to really take off! Uptake so far has been measured, and has sparked quite a bit of discussion on our P2 and during our weekly office hours on IRC. Here’s what’s been going on:

This Week

  • Published 11 videos (7 WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more., 1 MeetupMeetup All local/regional gatherings that are officially a part of the WordPress world but are not WordCamps are organized through https://www.meetup.com/. A meetup is typically a chance for local WordPress users to get together and share new ideas and seek help from one another. Searching for ‘WordPress’ on meetup.com will help you find options in your area., 3 How-to)
  • For “how-to” videos, we discussed how to format video descriptions, and looking into ways to give proper attribution to uploaders.
  • Discussed duplicate content – For now we allow duplicate videos if they come from different sources. We’ll let visitors determine which is best. We will revisit if it looks like things are getting out of hand.
  • Along with that, discussed the need to improve the discoverability of up-voted content on the site. Currently star ratings and likes are possible on video pages, but there is no way to effectively promote this content to new visitors, and it is not a ranking factor in site searches.

Next Week

  • Finalize how we want to handle “how-to” video descriptions/attributions.
  • Continue making improvements to process documentation to improve process of on-boarding new mods.
  • Mod the heck out of whatever videos come our way.

WordPress.tv Moderator Update: Week 11

Naturally, as you can see from the post preceding this one, the biggest news for the mod squad is the same as it is for you:  Now anyone can “Get Involved” in WordPress.tv!  We’ve already had a few submissions coming in, and expect that number to grow steadily! In our IRC office hours and posts on our P2 site, we have been busy getting ready:

Last Week:

  • Welcomed our newest Moderator, Karim!  He will be a huge help in getting our recent videos from WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. Netherlands published!
  • Discussed how to approach and classify WordPress “meetupMeetup All local/regional gatherings that are officially a part of the WordPress world but are not WordCamps are organized through https://www.meetup.com/. A meetup is typically a chance for local WordPress users to get together and share new ideas and seek help from one another. Searching for ‘WordPress’ on meetup.com will help you find options in your area.” submissions, which we think will vary a little a bit, compared to WordCamp presentation videos we’ve seen.
  • Published 30 videos.

Next Week:

  • Getting ready for some awesome submissions.
  • Looking to plan a docs sprint soon, to build out the rest of our documentation on how to become a moderator.
  • Publish great WordCamp videos.

WordPress.tv Moderator Update: Week 8

This has been a busy week for moderators at WordPress.tv, especially with the approaching availability of a public-facing video uploader. What this means is that soon anyone can submit their best WordPress videos (tutorials, presentations, meetups, etc.) to the benefit of all users. Pretty exciting times, and look for a public announcement next week!

As a result of this big change, our weekly IRC chat was quite active. You can catch up on the conversation here, or stop by our P2 page, where we have also been discussing the impact that publicly uploaded videos has on our workflow as moderators.  Here’s what happened, and what’s coming up:

Last Week:

  • Working on revised submission standards to include screencasts, meetups, presentations, and other video content.
  • Featured Videos on the WordPress.tv homepage – Mods will now promote videos that really stand out from the latests submissions, and promote them as Featured content on the site.
  • The WordCamp TV page now features updated content from recent WordCamps, and better tools for browsing our growing catalog of videos.
  • Had our best week to date!  We published 31 videos (over 4 a day!) last week from recent WordCamps (Norway, Phoenix, and Nepal) as well as recently discovered content from past WordCamps.
  • Tested the new video uploader interface, ahead of making it available to the public.

Next Week:

  • A special announcement!
  • An open call for more moderators!  (Interested?  Drop a line here in the comments)
  • MOAR VIDEOS!!!
  • Seriously, if it sounds like I’m being vague, it’s because we have no idea what to expect next week.  🙂

WordPress.tv Moderator Update: Week 7

As weeks go, this has been a big one. Why? Because we’re considering opening WordPress.tv to the public, so anyone can upload and contribute their videos from WordPress meetups, screencasting tutorials, vodcasts, etc.

Considering that ATM we only publish WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. videos (and other announcements) this is a big change, for us as moderators, and for the WordPress community as a whole.  It’s exciting, kind of scary, and could change the face of WordPress.tv forever!  You know, no pressure.  🙂

Here’s a look back, and a look ahead

Last Week:

  • Got our new moderators oriented and up to speed.
  • Several improvements to our process documentation. (ongoing)
  • A big discussion on IRC about that thing I just mentioned. [Log]

Next Week:

What do you think about making WordPress.tv available to more than just WordCamps? Questions? Concerns? Suggestions?  Please let us know in the comments below, or join us next week for office hours on IRC and be a part of the conversation.

WordPress.tv Moderator Update: Week 6

Last Week

Now with moar moderators!
It’s been a busy week behind-the-scenes here in moderator land. We added a total of 4 new mods (doubling the size of our group) and that has been very refreshing! It has also led to a lot of chatter, as the “senior” moderators have only been here 3 months, and we we’re still working on our process documentation. Suffice it to say, lots of conversation on our P2P2 “P2” is the name of the theme the blogs of make.wordpress.org use. When asked to post or view something “on the p2” by a member of the WPTV team, that usually means you’re asked to check https://make.wordpress.org/tv. and during office hours on IRC yesterday as we have slowly been catching everyone up on how things are done. It’s a good problem to have. 🙂

Next week

Documentation
We have our new mods documenting their processes as they learn, which is a big help! Hopefully we will have outr process docs filled out soon. We have also have put together a document on Video Submission Standards to share with WC organizers. We’re still editing and adding to it, but hope to get that to the proper subcommittee soon to be a part of the info that is given to future WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. organizers. Work on both of these projects continue for next week.

We’re going retro!
One of the reasons we have WordCamp video moderators right now is because this used to be the job of one busy and over-worked person. That led to some videos falling through the cracks, as you can imagine. Well we’ve done an audit of the site, and found a bunch of unpublished videos from past WordCamps. We will be publishing these to WordCamp.tv next week (and beyond) so if you missed a session from your favorite WordCamp, stay tuned!

WordPress.tv Moderator Update: Week 5

Not much to report with regard to publishing WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. videos to the site. We have submissions in the queue for Phoenix, Nepal, and Vancouver, and will be publishing those shortly. For now, the biggest news to report is that we have new moderators to welcome to the fold. Big thanks to @blobaugh, @andrewmorris, and @theadityajain for stepping up, and we look forward to your contributions to the group. As a special prize you each receive a free copy of WordPress, as well as all the WordCamp videos you can watch! 🙂

We also had our first IRC meetupMeetup All local/regional gatherings that are officially a part of the WordPress world but are not WordCamps are organized through https://www.meetup.com/. A meetup is typically a chance for local WordPress users to get together and share new ideas and seek help from one another. Searching for ‘WordPress’ on meetup.com will help you find options in your area. yesterday in the new #wordcamp channel, which at 2 hours long ran a bit over schedule, but was very spirited. Thanks to all who could make it! As we are a very distributed team, these kind of official meetups are difficult to organize, due to scheduling, time zones, etc. Our P2 remains the primary point of communication to us, but I’m also happy to announce that we will keep regular office hours for anyone who wants to chat in real time. You’re guaranteed to find a moderator (probably me!) if you want to chat, talk business, share concerns, learn how to contribute, etc. Here’s the deets:

We have also expanded our efforts in documenting our processes as well as communicating quality standards to WordCamp organizers. These are works-in-progress so if you have anything to add (or correct) let yourself be heard in the comments under each doc.

WordPress.tv Moderator Update – Week 4

It has been a slow week for WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. videos here at WordPress.tv, but it is a temporary lull, as there have already been some great WordCamps to kick off 2013 and we expect to see those videos in the moderator queue soon. So for now the big news is that we have finally set a time/place to meet and discuss the initiatives we’d like to work on for the upcoming year. This is an open meeting, so you are welcome to attend, especially if you would like to join us!
