WPTV Team Chat Notes 7/7/2016

We met in Community SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/. last week to discuss how things are going on WordPress.tv and here is what we discussed:

  • Incoming WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. videos – Working on WC Asheville which will be ready for post production soon. None in the Pending Review
  • Post Production/Publishing – Videos from WC Antwerp are available for editing (claim one here) and WordCamp Asheville will be uploaded soon 30-40 raw video files that will need full editing
  • Outreach – All camps for July have been contacted
  • WPTV Blog – @jwparky and @jerrysarcastic have switched publishing days. John’s second video interview post was published last Friday but he will be switching to every other Tuesday. Also noted that we get a lot of traffic to the blog from the posts that appear in the WordPress Dashboard (Planet WordPress Feed)
  • Captions/Subtitles – New captions submitted by @rianrietveld and @jessicaestes, and it was pointed out we could use a style guide for captions. @jerrysarscastic will add a page for that to the WPTV Moderator Handbook.

WPTV Team Chat Notes: 6/30/2016

We met last Thursday to discuss the state of WPTV for another week. Here is what we talked about:

Incoming WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. videos – What is our current status, what are we expecting soon

WCEU and WC Antwerp are uploading to AWS.

Post Production/Publishing – What videos do we have that need post production work. Are there pending videos in WPTV that need out help in publishing? How can the team help?

Will have WC Asheville for post soon. WC Antwerp is trimmed but does not have intro/outro

Outreach – Camps we’ve heard from, camps we may want to reach out to

Camps for the month of July have been contacted

WPTV Blog – What have we posted recently, what are we planning to post*

@johnparkinson in publishing another interview post on Friday continuing a twice-monthly schedule

Subtitling/captioning – do we have new captions to approve this week? New videos that can be captioned?

This is a new weekly agenda item. Lots of interest post WCEU, which is great to see. @casiepa mentioned he is willing to work on a script to convert Youtube caption formats to work with WordPress.tv, and also @extraboy brought it up with the community team while at WCEU.

Starting out, we will ask captioners (captioneers?) to try and complete captions/subs for two videos this week, and report back about how that went, working toward making this a weekly update on the things we are adding captions to. If you only have time to work on captioning one video a week, even a short one, is fine too. Any help would be great!

WPTV Team Chat Notes: 6/16/2016

We met today to discuss the state of WPTV for another week. Here is what we talked about:

  • 1. Incoming WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. videos – WordCamp Hamilton had some uploader issues but is sorted out. Videos starting to trickle into our AWS account. Waiting on several recent camps to submit as well
  • 2. Post Production/Publishing – We are also all caught up on videos pending publication.
  • 3. Outreach – @roseapplemedia has been trying this, but there has not been a ton of response so far. We discussed the difficulty in finding out who the AV coordinator is, and how we can easily find out that contact so we can pingPing The act of sending a very small amount of data to an end point. Ping is used in computer science to illicit a response from a target server to test it’s connection. Ping is also a term used by Slack users to @ someone or send them a direct message (DM). Users might say something along the lines of “Ping me when the meeting starts.” them
  • 4. WPTV Blog – second “featured on wptv” post is live, and traffic to the WPTV blog is much improved. We also took a look at @jwparky‘s recent interviews with community members, and looks like we are a go to start publishing those bi-monthly

We also took a bit of time to discuss @oleg‘s proposal to bring more vodcast and interview content onto our site, from existing YT channels. Full post is here if you’d like to comment.

WPTV Team Chat Notes – 6/9/2016

This week’s modchat was a short one that turned into a long one! Here are the agenda items we discussed:

  • 1. Incoming WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. videos – We have nothing incoming at the moment, but many recent camps that have not submitted, as well as upcoming camps (4 this weekend!) so this is bound to change soon
  • 2. Post Production/Publishing – We are also all caught up on videos pending publication.
  • 3. Outreach – Nothing to report this week
  • 4. WPTV Blog – We published our first “Featured on WordPress.tv” post on the wptv blog, which you can see here. This post is also shared on the Planet WordPress feed, and that helped us to generate a good bit of traffic. There is a post here asking for suggestions for next week’s post, which is featuring dev-focused video. If you have a suggestion be sure to leave a comment there!

Open floor – after clearing the agenda items, we also discussed the following:

  • @tashan has been having a bit of trouble in loading WordCamp Miami videos to our YT channel. If you are a manager on that channel, you can help out by grabbing a video off the list here and uploading it to YT.
  • @xtraboy shared @marbio‘s script for downloading media files from WordPress RSS feeds. May be an interesting way to get videos uploaded to YT automatically, if we opt to go that route still: https://github.com/cobyan/wordpress-feed-attachment-download
  • We had a good discussion around our plans for putting video interviews on the wptv blog, and using some existing content that @xtraboy pointed out on YT. @brashrebel also volunteered video from his vodcast as well, which meets our video guidelines and is also ready to share.

WPTV Team Chat Notes – 6/2

We’ve been trying a new structure for our weekly meetings, with the following structure – and an “open floor” at the end to bring up whatever else is on our minds:

  • 2. Post Production/Publishing – What videos do we have that need post production work. Are there pending videos in WPTV that need out help in publishing? How can the team help?
  • 3. Outreach – Camps we’ve heard from, camps we may want to reach out to
  • 4. WPTV Blog – What have we posted recently, what are we planning to post

With those points in mind, here is what we discussed this week:

  • 1. Incoming WordCamp videos – No incoming videos at the moment, but we have a few camps that just wrapped up, and lots of camps in the next few weeks, so that is bound to change
  • 2. Post Production/Publishing – We have a few WC London videos that need to be moved from S3 to WPTV. Spreadsheet is here so feel free to claim one! These do not need any post production (maybe title slides at most) so should be easy to handle. We are also going to look into what it takes to add a YT upload form to the WPTV P2P2 “P2” is the name of the theme the blogs of make.wordpress.org use. When asked to post or view something “on the p2” by a member of the WPTV team, that usually means you’re asked to check https://make.wordpress.org/tv., based on @roseapple‘s proposal here: https://make.wordpress.org/tv/2016/05/26/youtube-proposal/
  • 3. Outreach – We are going to start reaching out to video coordinators the week before the camp is going to be held, inviting them to our SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/. channel to answer any questions we have, and get a dialogue started in our public channel. @roseapple is going to handle the actual pinging, as he handles shipping out cameras, and already knows who to pingPing The act of sending a very small amount of data to an end point. Ping is used in computer science to illicit a response from a target server to test it’s connection. Ping is also a term used by Slack users to @ someone or send them a direct message (DM). Users might say something along the lines of “Ping me when the meeting starts.”
  • 4. WPTV Blog – We are ready to start publishing weekly wrap-up posts to our WPTV blog. Your suggestions for next weeks post can be added here. @jwparky will also be working on regular interview posts TBA.

How far we’ve come, how far we have to go

In today’s modchat we talked about what we accomplished in the last year as a team. It’s been pretty amazing to see everyone come together, new faces and old friends alike, to really push this team forward, and boy have we done a lot! Over the last year we have:

  • created a post-processing workflow that helps WordCamps get video to us faster, as well as open up a completely new avenue to contribution that did not exist before
  • improved our outreach to WordCamps, proactively contacting them before and after the event, to offer any any assistance we can, help improve submission quality, and reduce organizer stress
  • increased our reach, by rescuing a forgotten Twitter account, and using it to announce all videos we publish, as well as started work on a YouTube channel to increase our reach and appeal even more.
  • Put a redesign of WPTV on the community’s radar, and gotten the ball rolling for a (greatly needed) new site for WordPress lovers and learners everywhere.

There are of course many other things we did along the way that does not get captured in the above “big 4” but in total, the efforts of this team helped WPTV to reach over 1000 videos published in 2015, an amazing feat!

To do all these things in a year is humbling, and could not happen without your help, so thank you to everyone who pitched in this year. Many hands make light work! 🙂

Where do we go from here?

Another big part of our chat today was talking about 2016, and some of the goals we want to work towards for the upcoming year. Here are some of the things we discussed:

  • Transcoding/storage: Increased usage of Elastic Transcode (Amazon) and S3 storage to make raw files smaller and easier to download/work on after download. We tested this last year, this year we put it into production.
  • Automating AWS – Look for a dev to help us with Amazon’s APIAPI An API or Application Programming Interface is a software intermediary that allows programs to interact with each other and share data in limited, clearly defined ways. for automating tasks like transcoding, and in the meantime find a contributor(s) willing to “own” increased usage of Amazon services for WPTV
  • Captioning – This has been a tough one for us to add to our limited resources, but also a huge need. Currently looking for another community team to “own” this in the short term, around some planned contributor drives early in the year.
  • YouTube – One big way we can help with captioning efforts is to finalize our work on pushing WPTV content to YouTube, which does some heavy lifting with automated captioning (which can later be edited for accuracy.)
  • WPTV contributor drive – Editors (post processing) is our biggest need, so our efforts will be focused on growing that side of our team with an upcoming contributor drive, date TBD. We will need to smooth out our onboading flow to take advantage of this, so a few handbook sprits are in the works!

That’s a pretty good list to get us going for 2016. Thanks again everyone! We have no more scheduled meetings for 2015 (due to the winter holidays) but I hope to see you all again on the first modchat of the year: Thursday January 7th at 17:00 UTC in the #wptv channel in SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/..

Interested in helping out? Why not join us wherever you are in the world. Details are in the blue box at the top of the site!

Modchat Recap – 8/13

A little late in posting this, but here is what we discussed in our team meeting last Thursday:

  • @roseapplemedia has all the US camera kits at his home base this month.
  • We are going to use this time to update and improve our camera documentation here: https://plan.wordcamp.org/video/
  • Because Michael will have the actual gear in his possession, he will be doing short setup videos for all our kits and gear
  • WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. Outreach – One of the biggest problems we have with docs is not that they are out of date, but that WC organizers almost never see them.
  • How do we let camps know about this awesome resource?
  • @johnparkinson has volunteered to take point in wrangling WordCamp outreach. Posting soon to get some ideas about what we can try. Yay John!

Modchat Recap – 8/06

No meeting notes from last week, as not many mods were able to make the chat. Here is what we discussed this week.

  • State of queues – We had quite a few from the last batch of submissions that have problems of one kind or another. Also everyone gave much deserved praise to @sgelob (not present) for his work in the Pending queue last week
  • New “Pending Delete” queue in WPTV – Any unpublishable videos can be put in that queue, along with a tag for the issue (LOGO, NO AUDIO, etc.) I will prepare a monthly transparency report to post to our P2P2 “P2” is the name of the theme the blogs of make.wordpress.org use. When asked to post or view something “on the p2” by a member of the WPTV team, that usually means you’re asked to check https://make.wordpress.org/tv., listing the deletes as well as the reason for them.
  • Upcoming camps – There are no US camps on the schedule for August. @roseapplemedia will have the camera kits in his possession all month, so a great chance to work on revamping camera docs.
  • Amazon Elastic Transcode – Still looking at options for automating transcoding, as well as looking at output quality.
  • Announcing new videos – We had a brief after-meeting discussion about how the Twitter account is doing, as well as some ideas on how we can automate notifying camps/speakers about new videos we publish. Starts here.

All in all a great meeting. Full transcript here. See you next week! 🙂

Modchat recap – 7/23

The WordPress.tv modsquad convened today in the WPTV SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/. channel to discuss the happenings of the week:

  • Recovered WordPressTV Twitter account (Props Michael Pick) and hooked it up to our site. All videos published now will also be shared automatically with our Twitter account. 🙂
  • First new tweet: https://twitter.com/WordPressTV/status/624250439429521408
  • Trac ticket to add Twitter player cards, may not work with the Flash player in VideoPress 1.0 – https://meta.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/976
  • Upcoming post on adding hashtags to custom tweets before publishing.
  • Early feedback from our first trials of Amazon Elastic Transcoder. Was able to transcode a 2GB RAW video file into a tidy ~600MB mp4. Hoping to roll out faster/easier downloads to reduce the barrier to contributions to post-processing.
