What can we do to improve translations/subtitles?

Welcome to the official blog of the TV review team for WordPress.tv

We approve and publish all videos on WordPress.tv as well as help WordCamps with video post-production and captioning and subtitling of published videos.

We use this P2P2 “P2” is the name of the theme the blogs of make.wordpress.org use. When asked to post or view something “on the p2” by a member of the WPTV team, that usually means you’re asked to check https://make.wordpress.org/tv. to post our progress, status reports, and occasional geeky video debates. Use the “Subscribe to Blog via Email” widgetWidget A WordPress Widget is a small block that performs a specific function. You can add these widgets in sidebars also known as widget-ready areas on your web page. WordPress widgets were originally created to provide a simple and easy-to-use way of giving design and structure control of the WordPress theme to the user. to follow along!

Video Editing — You can see what videos we have that need editing in this spreadsheet. No special credentials are needed, just download the raw video file, and use your favorite app to edit.

Subtitles/captions — You can help us extend the reach of of WordPress.tv by adding captions or subtitles to any published video. Just find your favorite video, and follow the steps here to create a caption/translation file and submit for review.

Weekly meetings

We use Slack for real-time communication. As contributors live all over the world, there are discussions happening at all hours of the day. We have weekly team meetings every Thursday at 17:00 UTC, and they are open to the public!

Translating wordpress.tv

You may not know this because we don’t get too many submissions, but it is easy to add a caption file to videos on wordpress.tv: http://wordpress.tv/using-amara-org-to-caption-or-subtitle-a-wordpress-tv-video/

With that in mind, how do we feel about starting a new sub-team within the ModSquad aimed at translating our current (and future) English language videos by adding captions, so that we can start sharing the wealth of WordPress knowledge we see every day.

Since so many of us are involved in local Meetups and Contributor Days (at local WordCamps) another key role this translation team could help with is local outreach. For example, how cool would it be to have a “Translation Party” at your next meetupMeetup All local/regional gatherings that are officially a part of the WordPress world but are not WordCamps are organized through https://www.meetup.com/. A meetup is typically a chance for local WordPress users to get together and share new ideas and seek help from one another. Searching for ‘WordPress’ on meetup.com will help you find options in your area.,?

Anyone interested in helping to build this new team? What else can we do to take our current library of videos and expand it’s reach globally?

  Are you fluent in any other languages? if not, I think creating captions in English are still very helpful for a couple of reasons:
  - Opens our videos up to anyone with accessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accessibility) issues, so they can enjoy them too
  - Since a caption file (with timestamps, etc.) is already attached to that video, it makes translating it to another language much easier for another contributor.

    I should add that I am firmly in the English camp here as well. I speak a bit of Spanish, but not to the degree that I can translate WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. videos, alas.

I already have the subtitleing on my agenda whenever the present german vids are finished.

Looking at the variety of languages the focus for (new) mods should be to cover at least two languages (no matter which) to get (speaking in really long terms) all vids subtitled in all languages i.e. we also need folks speaking both czech and french e.g.

A meetup is typically a chance for local WordPress users to get together and share new ideas and seek help from one another. Searching for ‘WordPress’ on meetup.com will help you find options in your area. it will overstrain most of our participants.

  I want to avoid turning this into a full time job, so perhaps we could all start by picking a favorite video in English and translating it? Right now there are no translations happening, so starting small is better than no start at all
  
  We can then start featuring these in the weekly moderator updates that @myroseapple has started making on make.wordpress.orgWordPress.org The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https://wordpress.org//community and get the word out that way.
