A few changes to the WordCamp TV page, and a reminder about taxonomies

Alongside discussions about regularly refreshing our featured videos on the site, @maharzan and I spent a bit of time working on freshening up content on the WordCamp TV page. Primarily we’ve made changes to the area below the featured video box, in the following ways:

  • The groups of camp videos (each with 4 thumbnails below) are updated a bit to reflect some of the more recent camps we’ve been publishing, as well as feature past camps that have good quality videos. You’ll see WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. Phoenix 2013 listed there now, for example
  • In the sidebarSidebar A sidebar in WordPress is referred to a widget-ready area used by WordPress themes to display information that is not a part of the main content. It is not always a vertical column on the side. It can be a horizontal rectangle below or above the content area, footer, header, or any where in the theme. to the left, two new widgets have been added, allowing visitors to this page to see the most recent videos, as well as search by year (categoryCategory The 'category' taxonomy lets you group posts / content together that share a common bond. Categories are pre-defined and broad ranging.)

Regarding the videos grouped by camp – Do you think we should update this to show the most recent camps coming through the site, or only to feature groups of the best camps, in terms of content, video quality, number of videos, etc. Basically, how would you like to see this space used?

Regarding the widgetWidget A WordPress Widget is a small block that performs a specific function. You can add these widgets in sidebars also known as widget-ready areas on your web page. WordPress widgets were originally created to provide a simple and easy-to-use way of giving design and structure control of the WordPress theme to the user. sidebar – Any thoughts on what we can do to make this area more useful to visitors looking for videos?

Also, most of the content on the WordCamp page is controlled by a very important taxonomyTaxonomy A taxonomy is a way to group things together. In WordPress, some common taxonomies are category, link, tag, or post format. https://codex.wordpress.org/Taxonomies#Default_Taxonomies., and that is the “Event” it is published under. Please be sure to double check all submissions to make sure that the Event taxonomy uses the WordCamp/Camp Name/Year naming convention, for example:

Event: WordCamp Atlantis 2013

I know that organizers can sometimes get the order of these reversed, or possibly forget to add the event taxonomy altogether. Please make sure to double check to make sure it is in the format above, and if you notice a group of videos that is getting it consistently wrong, please put a new post up to the P2P2 “P2” is the name of the theme the blogs of make.wordpress.org use. When asked to post or view something “on the p2” by a member of the WPTV team, that usually means you’re asked to check https://make.wordpress.org/tv. so other mods can be on the lookout for it.

Thanks! 🙂
