    • @webtechpooja provided an update on the Contributor DayContributor Day Contributor Days are standalone days, frequently held before or after WordCamps but they can also happen at any time.   2. Sprint Lesson plans for WP 5.7
    • Request for volunteers to complete drafts for the following Lesson plans by February 23, 2021. Most of these have video workshops:
      1. Using blocks in a Post – volunteers still required
      2. BlockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience.   3. Slides unified and proposal submitted to MetaMeta Meta is a term that refers to the inside workings of a group. For us, this is the team that works on internal WordPress sites like WordCamp Central and Make WordPress. (help us test)
    • This plugin helps creates slides and that one can easily update/revise on Learn WordPress.
    • Contributors on WC India (Hardik, Anand Vaid, Abhijeet) and @nalininonstopnewsuk tested the plugin
    • @paaljoachim has volunteered to test the plugin on 5.7
    • @courane01 has submitted 2 support tickets and is awaiting a response
    • You are encouraged to test and provide any feedback on the post.
  4. Logistics on staying in step with a release (read release notes)
  5. Plan March sprint with key stakeholders (Meta, Design, Marketing, etc.
    • Training will operate sprint as a month-long cycle with specific goals for now.  Other goals, like Learn functionality, that go beyond CoreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. releases will be part of the Learn Working Group.  Defining who are our key stakeholders for March and planning times to gather is our goal for this month.
  6. Handbooks
    • Training handbook (team roles, procedures) – @azhiyadev is almost done with the first pass of the review. What we are working on now

Learn WordPress launch has happened!

Really huge milestone for many of the .org Make teams. This has been a cross-team initiative spanning #training, #marketing, #community, #WPTV #meta and more. Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to this launch. @webcommsatat, @meher, @oglekler, @lmurriom, @harishanker, @hlashbrooke, @nalini, @azhiyadev, @coreymckrill, @melchoyce and more have been amazing to see in action this week.

To date, #training has had more than 150 contributors involved in our lessons plans. To celebrate the launch we will be holding a virtual get together tomorrow Wednesday 16 December 2020 from 1 pm to 1:45 pm UTC. @webcommsat reminded everyone that registration will close Tuesday 14 December 2020, 8 pm UTC. As a celebration, @meher has a fun quiz (non WordPress) for us to participate in during the event. Bring a pen and paper to write down all your answers.

Marketing help wanted

#marketing has done so much towards the launch today. However, they still need our help as part of the ongoing promotion of the Learn siteLearn site The Training Team publishes its completed lesson plans at https://learn.wordpress.org/ which is often referred to as the "Learn" site.. Share socials with #LearnWP – refer to Slack timestamp for specific channels.

Marketing is seeking quotes on how people use the Learn website and why contributing to Learn and Training is fun, and how you can encourage others.

We’ve appended the links directly to the social platforms mentioned to draw your attention to those. You will find them under the “Action Items” We’d love for you to share it today AND ongoing – #marketing has a lot of promotions planned for the next couple of months.

@webcommsatat mentioned that the first week is crucial so please follow the channels mentioned and like, retweet items to your network to help us amplify the messages. #marketing has a 6 month campaign with lots of opportunities for you to get involved. They will be sharing images and videos from official accounts and are making arrangements with a number of sites and podcasts. If you have any suggestions for others please let her and @meher know. They are also working on campaign messages and videos os off you are interested in this area, do connect with them. They look forward to welcoming you all to the event tomorrow.

Merging all Learn groups

We are in the process of merging the Learn working groups to all who call the Training team home. Please welcome the contributors who are focusing on the workshops areas. We expect additional meetings to occur from our team P2P2 P2 or O2 is the term people use to refer to the Make WordPress blog. It can be found at https://make.wordpress.org/./blog and in the #training Slack channel.

The proposal has been out for quite a while without objection, so work has begun to merge the two. This opens up many opportunities for collaboration of planning and organisation of content between workshops and lesson plans.

Learn landing page

The first phase of visually organizing lesson plans has begun. We are still working towards the agreed lesson plan landing page.

Learn is now in the main site nav on .org, in the footer and for most localised version as well. Thanks to everyone who has been working cross-team on headerHeader The header of your site is typically the first thing people will experience. The masthead or header art located across the top of your page is part of the look and feel of your website. It can influence a visitor’s opinion about your content and you/ your organization’s brand. It may also look different on different screen sizes. menu and footer changes.

Team organization review

As a team, a lot of our procedures and workflows have changed since we resumed regular meetings several months ago. We need to revisit our Handbook and Trello board around ideas for our workflow.

We have a lot of Learn site functionality Trello board and team workflow/processes to organize as well. A few of us have been capturing ideas leading up to the launch today for some of those areas.

We also need to do a brief round through revising out procedures, workflows, ensuring we track contributions and auditing methods. @carike highlighted the big issue with the current auditing tool is that it make it difficult to use for collaboration and therefore makes the audit tools un-auditable. A username and date for each change as part of the post_meta data would be highly appreciated.

@evarlese and @azhiyadev have expressed an interest in helping prioritise these needs soon. Once this has been completed we can then resume content creation. We expect this to be done over the next few weeks.

Tentative guideline for editing lesson plans

We have an audit tool in the works to replace the features we miss from GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the ‘pull request’ where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged be the repository owner. https://github.com/. #meta is working on this but we do not have an ETA yet. Our tentative guideline for editing live lesson plans until then is:

  1. Copy/paste live content to a draft post
  2. Title the work in progress as “DRAFT: Title of original”
  3. Save, but do not publish
  4. Leave a message in Training

This will allow anyone to pick up and continue the work, track revisionsRevisions The WordPress revisions system stores a record of each saved draft or published update. The revision system allows you to see what changes were made in each revision by dragging a slider (or using the Next/Previous buttons). The display indicates what has changed in each revision. and set media images on Learn site for others to access.

What we’re working on

  • Most of our top priority items are finished.
  • There are a few lesson plans that are prioritized to create and publish.
    • @geheren is working on creating/joining Slack and orientation.
    • @azhiyadev is also working on the Getting Help lesson plan.
    • We could also use a volunteer to help with the Get Involved lesson plan.
  • We’ve seen a lot of interaction on our proposed redesigns for the Lesson Plans landing page.
    • Timeline: we would like to come to an agreement on the designs today so we can move forward with some implementation before launch next week.

    • For filtered/archive pages, the team seemed to roughly agree that keeping filters on the right sidebarSidebar A sidebar in WordPress is referred to a widget-ready area used by WordPress themes to display information that is not a part of the main content. It is not always a vertical column on the side. It can be a horizontal rectangle below or above the content area, footer, header, or any where in the theme. with a container around the individual lesson plans.
    • For the single lesson plan page, there’s some ongoing discussion with a general agreement that we would prefer to avoid accordions in the design for accessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accessibility) concerns, but would like to use breadcrumbs or another feature to help orient readers or educators within a lesson plan or series.
    • Future discussions will also need to consider chapters (like the Handbooks) and how to display lesson plans in a series.

We are currently working on these last steps before launching Learn.WordPress.org on December 15!

  • @courane01 said we are nearly done with tasks for launch!
  • One of the last big projects is a “partial landing page” so when someone visits the Lessons Plans page, things are laid out a bit better and more organized. @evarlese has been working on this. Currently, they are digging back to one of our design team collaborators who originally worked on the InVision layout @courane01 shared last Friday to get parts of this working.
  • @courane01 said there are still 2 lesson plans that need to be written:
    • Creating/joining Slack, orientation to channels and etiquette. @geheren took this on. @webcommsat can help review when done.
    • Joining Get Involved Teams – See Contributor Day Handbook. No one took this task to @courane01 is doing for now (but she has a lot going on for launch, if someone has time to take on).

@courane01 gave a shout-out to the #marketing team for coordinating with the #training and #community teams on the launch! They would like feedback:

  • Suggestions for the channels for external outreach and promotion. Where do you or those you know get their news about WordPress?
    • They could also really use non-English news sources in the outreach effort.
    • There is a link in Slack to a Google Doc to share ideas.
  • Marketing is also seeking quotes on how people use the Learn website and why contributing to Learn and Training is fun, and how you can encourage others.
  • @webcommsat also asked for volunteers to help with social sharing graphics

To celebrate the launch, @webcommsat announced that we will be golding a virtual get together on Wednesday 16 December from 1 pm to 1:45pm UTC.

  • There is a link to the Eventbrite on Slack.
  • Bring your party drinks, snacks and fancy backgrounds. This will be a cross-team event
  • If there are too many people, @webcommsat said we will plan a second event. Limited to Zoom’s numbers.
  • They will also be sharing graphics and social media items, plus a fun quiz.
  • One thing: @webcommsat asks that we check with everyone before photos are taken and shared on social media to be respectful to where people may be joining us from. We will take official photos, so make sure your Zoom name if it includes your email address, etc.
  • They are trying to organize a big virtual cake too, so reach out to @meher if you can participate.
  • Down the line, there will be a 6-month party too!

Standup/Check-In

  • @courane01 spent the last week working on cross-team communication. She followed up with @jessecowens and @sippis on slides and screenshots for #marketing. Her only blockers are time. By Friday, she will have any of our screenshots from herself and the team ready for #Marketing. She will also be working on the Get Involved lesson plan (see above), unless anyone else can take on.
  • @onealtr committed to learn last week on how to facilitate the meetings and was taught by @courane01. He led today’s meeting and it went great!
  • I (@geheren) took last week off after my “mini sprint” the week before. I went back to work after a week+ of vacation and needed to catch up. This week I will be working on this recap and the Slack lesson plan.

These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party that presents code in lesson plans have a bug with closing PHPPHP PHP (recursive acronym for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor) is a widely-used open source general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited for web development and can be embedded into HTML. http://php.net/manual/en/intro-whatis.php. snippets in particular. A bug report has been filed and hopefully can be resolved soon.

There has been a lot of progress on the other high priority items:

We have a release date of December 15, 2020, for Learn. This was a group decision with #marketing and #community-team to give WP5.6 and Learn some space in the communication and press. Thank you to #marketing for the thoughtfulness and work put into the release comms for Learn.

  • The launch for Learn will also include a social media pack. If you have any networks that you think would be useful in promoting Learn WordPress for launch and during the 3-month campaign, please let #marketing know.
  • #marketing would also welcome your input into a collaboration they shared in marketing this week. You can find it at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1PUJDhb7YDfRUj3CX_6IJSd2ANKQfkbmEl3KP5mY9q_c/edit
  • #marketing is collating a list of external promotional opportunities and scheduling these for both maximum promotion and to help ensure the material that is being shared is consistent and up-to-date. It allows them to keep up the momentum and include calls to action and calls for volunteers as needed. If you think you can help with this then please get please tag abahanonstopnewsuk in the #marketing slack channel
  • #marketing will share how you can be involved with the Learn WordPress launch closer to December 15, 2020.
  • #marketing also has internal fun plans to celebrate the Learn WordPress launch. If you would love to get involved, let them know. @webcommsat promises cake (virtual of course :-)).

One of our last steps on launch is coordinating wth #meta for some visual organization.

  • @coreymckrill has been working with the Training team to help with the flow and functionality of the site.
  • @dufresnesteven provided the work done roughing in Jan/Feb this winter. The team at the time envisioned an MVPMinimum Viable Product "A minimum viable product (MVP) is a product with just enough features to satisfy early customers, and to provide feedback for future product development." - WikiPedia including much of what is shown on the visual organization. Note, this is a 14-page file. If @chetan200891 or @jessecowens can point to any comments that happened around reaching this point, it’d be appreciated.
  • Before launch, we’d like at least a small portion of that organization to be present. Giving new visitors a bit of visual organization and flow through the site will help. @evarlese and @courane01 have been providing input into this. If anyone wants to contribute to the conversation, then @courane01 will be available in the Training slack from 17:00 UTC today. You can comment asynchronously.

In terms of what is left before launch, that the team can do, it would be nice to have the following lesson plans created:

Standup/Check-In

@courane01 committed to and completed cross-team efforts, monitoring what’s left to be done, onboarding new contributors as well as helping to onboard @onealtr to facilitate the Tuesday meetings in the near future.

@evarlese helped with the sprints and subsequently worked on updating/finishing content in lesson plans.

Would others like to assist with those lesson plans OR visual organization? Feedback on initial flow and help sorting the material is greatly appreciated. We can loosely organize that here in the channel or @courane01 can organize a blog post with approximate timeframes. We’d love to see the team share in the stand-ups in an ongoing manner. After launch, we will revisit internal documentation/procedures, our forms and more.

Open announcements/discussion

Please comment on the proposal to move the Learn Working Group to Training to better organize and unify the work of Learn.

As part of the progression, @evarlese has published the collective thoughts of those noted in the footer on Learn WordPress: Blue sky thinking. This is a brainstorm type document on where Learn can go, with a 3-year vision roughly presented. Please leave your feedback.

    1.  Time for more team congrats.  This week’s congrats go to @Michael Geheren.  He clocked many hours last week correcting missing screenshots and fixing broken links on the http://learn.wordpress.org website. So much so that he received a badge based upon our documentation.

To fully launch Learn, marketing team and media comms have put out a call out for support on High priority items. They include small chunks for many people to contribute just a bit of time, such as fixing screenshots that are missing. The post links to tutorials on getting started.

At the moment we are without a great way to track contributions. There are tools for very thorough auditing and revision control in progress, as well as ideas on how best to track contributions to work like fixing screenshots but these are not yet ready. In the meantime, please note your contributions by commenting on the post, if you do note it in SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/.     2. @jessecowens and @coreymckrill were very instrumental in getting this up and running. @jessecowens has been the training team repTeam Rep A Team Rep is a person who represents the Make WordPress team to the rest of the project, make sure issues are raised and addressed as needed, and coordinates cross-team efforts. for years and hopes to provide a more complete set of directions on how to do this. @coreymcrkill from the metaMeta Meta is a term that refers to the inside workings of a group. For us, this is the team that works on internal WordPress sites like WordCamp Central and Make WordPress. team was able to determine that the code and functionality for taxonomy are still available and could be added to the lesson plan editor.
    3. @courane01 will allocate some time to review all the GitHub repository and determine which slides are ready to be linked. There is a Slides Style Guide that can be used to determine if the content of the lesson plan is complete. The guide is a bit outdated but does document the team’s standards well. @courane01 will document what she finds as she reviews each plan.     4. We are still in discussions to standardise video workshops slide needs and updates will be posted to #training as more details arrive. The focus will be on getting the slides linked so they display. 
    5. @courane01 will put some thought into the download slides area. She will test this like a MeetupMeetup All local/regional gatherings that are officially a part of the WordPress world but are not WordCamps are organized through https://www.meetup.com/. A meetup is typically a chance for local WordPress users to get together and share new ideas and seek help from one another. Searching for ‘WordPress’ on meetup.com will help you find options in your area. organizer that may be fairly new to WordPress themselves and looking for something to present to others. We need to consider providing clear directions somewhere for what to do when downloading.  She’ll dig back to see what the expected download is – the slides code files or a PDF. In the meantime, the display in the browser is achievable soon with some work.
  4. Update from @evarlese2 sprint working sessions announced
    1. @evarlese who has checked, updated and added images and alt text for 9 lesson plans.
    2. @evarlese and @camikaos are holding 2 sprints on December 1st  some sprint working sessions scheduled to help with the high priority items. These will run for 3-hours each. 
    3. Anyone is welcome to join and dedicated people will be available to help with questions (and likely access too) so we can get through as many of these tasks as possible.
    4. If anyone else is interested in running a sprint then @erica is happy to help and can add more times to the post.
  5. Coordination with #marketing for social media communications when Learn launches
    1. Marketing is working on communications around a full launch. @courane01 attended this week’s meeting to help clarify and provide more specific way others can contribute and/or use what is on Learn.

  • @courane01 committed to screenshots.  She did not meet the goal due to several meetings and research around Learn functionality and MVP. She will focus on any needed meetings/research AND linking slides, documenting what “done” looks like for displaying in the browser.
  • @evarlese committed to updating screenshots and was able to get 9 done! She’s aiming to tackle one of the lesson plans that are “almost done” next week and/or spend some more time on screenshots.
  • @webtechpooja committed to code snippets review, and reviewed 5 lessons! She’ll finish code snippets review as much as she can this week and check about slide presentations.
  • @ibrahimkh41331 is aiming to start with updating screenshots.
  • @onealtr committed to helping with the screenshots last week, he did not meet the goal due to unexpected life changes. He will focus on the screenshots this week.

Tracking volunteers and contributions

At present, GitHub has been turned off.

The value that contributors make to all of .org is deeply valued and the Training team want to continue to recognise those who contribute. Over the next few meetings, the team will brainstorm ideas. 

Audit update

For the past few months, @courane01, @azhiyadev, @jillbinder and @webtechpooja have preliminarily audited all the lesson plans live on Learn.  These plans began in the training team handbook on Make, migrated to GitHub, and again migrated to Learn.

#marketing has put a call out for help. Small chunks of ways you can contribute:

  1. Screenshots contributors – fixing broken images
  2. Code snippets help – proofing and testing

Lesson plans nearly “done”

Medium chunks of ways you can contribute are to spend an hour or two on a single lesson plan to get it to a more complete position. We’ve been using Trello to track things and a few columns before the far right is an ‘Almost Ready’ column. The colour coding indicates what needs to be done.

Once a plan is audited, please move the relevant TrelloTrello Project management system using the concepts of boards and cards to organize tasks in a sane way. High-level organization and potentially larger areas of commitment for contribution

The team needs help thinking strategically and future-proofing where possible. One of the current pain points is keeping up with WP updates since leaving GitHub. The post editor tracking tools only work well for comparing past changes. Lesson plans will need to indicate what version of WP they are using eg. 5.4 or 5.5.  What will the workflow look like on revisionsRevisions The WordPress revisions system stores a record of each saved draft or published update. The revision system allows you to see what changes were made in each revision by dragging a slider (or using the Next/Previous buttons). The display indicates what has changed in each revision.? How do we assess the impact?

Slides, what is the best way to manage these moving forward. Videos are making their way to Learn, considerations to including them on lesson plans with means for instructor to download for offline use. Historically, all the material has been built for the Instructor. Lesson plans are their notes and guidance on what to cover, goals, etc. Slides are for people attending – historic links for the team’s decisions on these. Key posts relating to this topic:

How does the content stay current, provide instructors and participants/attendees a means to followup to official documentation after the session? Should it be a link to post content or have a taxonomy? How does the team know when docs update and adjust accordingly?

All the topics above will be discussed in more detail at future team meetings. Please consider the implications and impact proposed solutions will have on presenters and participants.

Introductions were made and then @courane01 revisited the goal of the Training team, creating lesson plans and instructional materials for anyone to use when teaching others WordPress. Plans have been used in Meetups, traditonal classrooms, bootcamps and workshops. The #community-team uses plans in several outreach initiatives as well, particularly around what is open-source. A few people pop into #training asking to be trained.

@courane01 asked for people interested in being the key lead for welcoming new people to the channel, similar approach to how #marketing welcomes new people to their channel.

After years of hard work, Lesson plans are now live on https://learn.wordpress.org/ However, it is not quite ready to draw attention too yet. Meeting notes for Learn site maintenance meeting held Friday 4 September 2020 in #community-team are now available.

Prioritize lesson plans that are current/hot topics, identify which need just a little push to take live.

The team needs to assess the state of lesson plans that are ready to be visible. @carike has done a great job of finding glitches from syncing from GithubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. GitHub introduced the concept of the ‘pull request’ where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged be the repository owner. https://github.com/ and @courane01 has tried to compare this against the team’s Trello board (tracks what is done and ready to be live).

There are a few pull requests in Github that should be reviewed/accepted on lesson plans. @courane01 suggested possibly working on a few lessons plans that are new/hot topics like all the changes to using the blockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience. editor brought up in 5.5.

@webcommsat is working with @hlashbrooke in the community on promotions and it will be good to gather some key info regarding lesson plans on Learn when this is ready to be promoted.

Discussion welcome on lesson plans. They have been built in Github and @courane01 would like to revisit if this should continue to be the case. The inital reason for using Github was when they were moved, all lesson plans images were lost from the Training team P2P2 P2 or O2 is the term people use to refer to the Make WordPress blog. It can be found at https://make.wordpress.org/. never to be restored.

Need to consider new lesson plans to be drafted. @courane01 has come up with a few but has not written the content for them yet. @webcommsat and @hlashbrooke have talked about linking these lessons/guides from the Q&As they are working on from the release and marketing. It would be good to look at how they can be aware of when these are ready and cross promote the resources. If anyone would like to write these plans then please contact @chetan200891 or @courane01 for access.

Determine what is an agreeable arrangement with brands on brand-specific mentions for important and unavoidable areas like contact forms.

An appropriate strategy is needed to teach things like contact forms or other areas that many sites need, but coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. doesn’t include. Later we can explore the lessons around very common plugins.

Plan/document how to partner with brands.

There is a need to think through what an appropriate mention of brands entails or could do.

Sync up with Polyglots for translating lesson plans.

@courane01 mentioned the need to prepare for partnering with #polygots as we get lessons live. The video workshop area is moving towards those needs as well.

Based on the Doodle poll, team meeting moving forward will be held on Fridays at 11:00 UTC in #training. @courane01 would be delighted to see a second meeting time for PM in the Americas and AM for parts of the pacific rim. A few people have expressed interest in that time slot.

Time to Set Team Goals for 2019

It’s that time of year when we need to evaluate how we did against our goals for this year and make new goals for the upcoming year.

In 2018 our goals were to:

5. Update lesson plans for 4.8-4.9/GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler. In fact, 2018 was a year where the team underwent a major restructuring of its tool and processes and we accomplished goals we hadn’t imagined when the year started. So our accomplishments for the year can be summed up as:

3. Restructure make.wordpress.org/training
4. Fix broken images (perhaps not all are fixed, but moving to GitHub addressed the problem)
5. Make workshop recommendations

So, for 2019 what should our new goals be? I’d propose a couple to begin with:

1. Launch learn.wordpress.org
2. Create several lesson plans to combine into an accessibility workshop (the ARIA session from WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. US has caught my eye…)
3. Use resources from WordPress.tv more often as a basis for lesson plans
4. Collaborate with other efforts such as the diversity speaker training and Kids Camp to get their material available from the learn.wordpress.org site
5. Increase the number of regular contributors to the team

These all seem very do-able. What else should the team be working towards? What should we have for stretch goals? All comments and ideas welcome!
