Learn WordPress Handbook

  • @camikaos hosted a sprint for the Learn WordPress Handbook last week.
  • The sprint focused on reviewing the existing Handbook drafts and adding in/making edits based on feedback.
  • For next steps, there is still a need for additional contributors to review and add any suggestions or edit to the draft Handbook pages.
    • For access to the Google doc to review and comment on the draft, please ask in the #training channel.
  • From the sprint, one item to be decided is where the Handbook should live: on the Make/Training team blog (this site) or in Learn WordPress itself.

Design UIUI UI is an acronym for User Interface - the layout of the page the user interacts with. Think ‘how are they doing that’ and less about what they are doing./UXUX UX is an acronym for User Experience - the way the user uses the UI. Think ‘what they are doing’ and less about how they do it. Review for Learn WordPress

  • Some Design team members have left feedback on the Review/Feedback Request: UX for learn.wordpress.org with suggested changes and/or improvements. Those include:
    • Making changes to the text on the home page, especially to clarify workshops and lesson plans.
    • Organizing content around topics and categories for both lesson plans and workshops in a unified way.
    • Revising the home page layout to highlight calls to action/content types differently.
  • @paaljoachim shared some additional thoughts/feedback on the terminology for workshops, as well, and plans to brainstorm some thoughts around definitions.
  • As a next step, the idea is to write up a proposal/post for the team to review and discuss the text on the home page, whether to make changes, and review how that aligns with Learn WordPress’ goals and mission.

Action Items

If there’s anything else you would like to see added to the notes, if you’d like to volunteer for or have thoughts on any of the action items, or if you’re interested in helping to facilitate or take notes for future meetings, please add a note in the comments or ask any questions in the Slack channel!

Meeting Recap

What’s everyone working on?

  • @camikaos is working on the Learn WordPress Handbook, and set up a sprint for contributors interested in helping.
  • @_dorsvenabili held two meetings with members of the Spanish community, and set up a sheet with workshop proposals/ideas.
    • One idea that came up in these conversations is to create a list of 10-20 workshops that should be available in all languages.
  • @evarlese worked on a UX review request for the Design team along with @courane01, and @paaljoachim has already shared some related feedback.
  • @webcommsat and the Marketing team are working on a keywords-related meeting in the #marketing channel, and have also been gathering feedback on the timing of MeetupMeetup All local/regional gatherings that are officially a part of the WordPress world but are not WordCamps are organized through https://www.meetup.com/. • @webtechpooja is organizing the Training team table for WordCamp India contributor day, and has published a helpful post for how contributors can get involved.
  • We talked a bit about plans for Community team-related training and content on Learn, particularly around Meetups and WordCamps.
    • Currently, the focus is more on Meetups and there are some related workshops available on the site already.

Announcements

5.7 Planning

  • The Training team has identified some lesson plan ideas to prepare in advance of the 5.7 launch.
  • Going forward, this may be something for the Learn WordPress Working Group to coordinate efforts around, particularly in terms of planned workshop launches.
  • @webcommsat suggested finding a dedicated time to walk through ideas and processes to coordinate across teams to make sure workshops and lesson plans help address launch-related questions.
  • Related to Lowering Barriers to Entry for Workshops on Learn, we talked a bit about ideas around how workshops and lesson plans tie in together, and with cross-team efforts.
  • @carike raised a concern about crediting all contributors, specifically for workshops, where it’s not currently visible to see who contributed things like scripts, producing, subtitles, captions, etc.
  • Relatedly, if some of these tasks are divided, credit is important for making sure all contributions are viewed equally. Allowing contributors to split the workload according to their preferences and expertise (i.e. if someone prefers to write lesson plans vs. appearing on camera) can help with onboarding new contributors, and making sure those contributions are visible.
  • @webcommsat suggested borrowing a similar structure to WordPress.tv, where it’s possible to see credits for edits, subtitles, and presenters.

Action Items

  • Explore changing the Learn WordPress Discussions Meetup group timezone from Pacific to UTC to encourage more consistency with timezones.
  • Coordinate dedicated time (Slack, Zoom, chat) to discuss with Marketing, the Learn WordPress Working Group, and Training, how best to approach planned content for CoreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. releases.
  • List out all the related contributions to content on Learn WordPress (i.e. subtitles, captions, scripts, producing) and map out where those should appear on Learn WordPress (i.e. workshops vs. lesson plan pages) to help build a request for showing credit similar to the WordPress.tv structure.
  • Help draft documentation around how to contribute to Learn WordPress in multiple languages based on the related Polyglots proposal.
  • Join the efforts to help build and create a Learn WordPress Handbook.

Meeting Recap

Reflections on 2020

Overall, we’re excited to have officially launched the Learn WordPress resource in December and for all the hard work that went into it from a variety of contributors and teams. In particular, it was really rewarding to see an idea that started way back in 2013 get put to good use, especially during a year like 2020.

There were also some ideas to share stats and a recap post-launch, especially to highlight some good news after all the hard work that was put into it, and to consider some revisionsRevisions The WordPress revisions system stores a record of each saved draft or published update. The revision system allows you to see what changes were made in each revision by dragging a slider (or using the Next/Previous buttons). Brainstorming for 2021

We had a really productive discussion around ideas and priorities for 2021. The relatively recent Learn WordPress: Blue sky thinking post allowed us to collect some ideas for the future, and in our discussion we highlighted a number of both long-term and intermediate goals to consider, including:

  • Building out documentation to help encourage new contributors to get involved, and to help new workshop presenters and discussion group leaders navigate the application process.
    • Additionally, developing guidelines around pedagogical principles or curriculum design.
  • Creating parity between lesson plans and workshop videos, as well as working to coordinate both into larger-scale courses and course material.
  • Developing a process around coordinating new content to coincide with major releases.
  • Exploring UXUX UX is an acronym for User Experience - the way the user uses the UI. Think ‘what they are doing’ and less about how they do it. improvements to the site, including things like how lesson plans are displayed and integrating related content, such as embedding video or related links into lesson plans and workshops.
  • Translating Learn WordPress, both including content like videos and lesson plans, as well as the site itself (i.e. using a pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party or GlotPress).
  • Exploring ways to make video more accessible, especially for viewers with limited bandwidth, i.e. being able to download subtitles/scripts for a video or including “learning hours” for each workshop or course. Likewise, making sure everything can be downloaded for those who are teaching offline or who have limited bandwidth.

Meeting times

Based on the previous Doodle, the proposed meeting times are the first Thursday of every month at 15:00 UTC and the third Thursday of every month at 19:00 UTC.

We will host our second meeting of the month on January 21st at 15:00 UTC since the first was at 19:00 UTC. In other words, the meeting times will be flipped for January, but we’ll move into the regular proposed schedule in February.

Action items/Get involved

@carike posted a proposal for COPPA compliance on Learn WordPress that could use some additional feedback and comments.

If you’re interested in helping to manage the HelpScout queue for Learn WordPress, reviewing discussion group leader applications, and workshops – or if you would like to submit a workshop – you can get involved any time in the #training channel in Slack.

Likewise, for anyone who attended the meeting, please feel free to add anything that I might have missed in the notes. Everyone is welcome to continue to share input and feedback on what was discussed in the comments, as well!

Learn WordPress Working Group: 2021 Meeting Times

Last week, we came to a decision on the proposal to move the Learn WordPress Working Group from the Community team channels over to the Training team channels. While the working group, and Learn WordPress in general, have always been a cross-team collaboration, this move will help us to consolidate decisions and conversations around learn.wordpress.org into one place.

With the launch of Learn WordPress and this decision, we also have a very nice segue into revisiting the current setup and meeting times for our working group, as well as priorities and best practices for cross-team collaboration with the Training team.

Historically, the Learn WordPress Working Group has met once per month for contributors to work on planning for Learn WordPress workshops and discussion groups. This includes planning for vetting workshop submissions, approving facilitators for discussion groups, and coordinating with the Training team on overall content planning and features for the Learn WordPress website.

I know some folks will be less available in the coming weeks due to holidays, so I would like to suggest that we find time for our first meeting in early January 2021. Please fill out this Doodle with times that work for you. We will close this by Dec. 31st, 2020 December 23, 2020 and will share the best time in a comment during the first week of January.

In the meantime, I’d also love to use this post to invite a bit of input in the comments to help formulate our agenda and discussions for our future meeting.

  • Starting with the discussion on the Learn WordPress: Blue Sky Thinking post, what do you consider to be the next priority or project for the Learn WordPress Working Group in relation to workshops and discussion groups?
  • As we plan for our first meeting of 2021, are there existing or new volunteers who would like to volunteer to work on specific roles or tasks, such as reviewing workshop submissions, outreach, or discussion group planning?
