Letโ€™s celebrate another 6 months of goals and projects accomplished! Please read through the post and share any additional thoughts in the comments.
  • Do we need a separateย LearnWP Topic Vetting boardย for vetting topics?
The teamโ€™s dynamics have changed since then, so letโ€™s reevaluate. What is the value of having a dedicated board for topic vetting? Could we add back a column at the left of theย LearnWP Content- Development boardย for issues waiting vetting?
    • According to @bsanevans Last year, SMEs struggled to find relevant issues to vet due to all topics being in a single column, leading to a backlog of 100+ issues. The topic vetting project board, with its categoryCategory The 'category' taxonomy lets you group posts / content together that share a common bond. Categories are pre-defined and broad ranging. tabs, made it easier for SMEs to locate their issues.
Now, only 5 issues are waiting to be vetted, a significant improvement from last year. This change allows us to consider reverting to a single column in the content development project board. The backlog was primarily due to Training creating many new issues per release, but this process has paused, making the vetting board more manageable.
    • @piyopiyofox closed all Lesson Plans and Tutorials unless requested to be converted into a Lesson. The team could benefit from an editorial calendar for release-related content and a general checklist to vet other content for relevancy and priority.
    • @webcommsat consider using the Dev Blog model for idea planning and discussion, though the emoji thumb voting might not work due to more people involved in training. Using GitHub for planning could be effective. We can filterFilter Filters are one of the two types of Hooks https://codex.wordpress.org/Plugin_API/Hooks. They provide a way for functions to modify data of other functions. They are the counterpart to Actions. Unlike Actions, filters are meant to work in an isolated manner, and should never have side effects such as affecting global variables and output. the existing board for ideas and adapt some Dev Blog practices for training. This could also aid in cross-mapping and linking published items, which is increasingly important. I already consider training when reviewing new Dev Blog ideas and posts.

ย Meeting Note Takers

Looking for feedback

We got some input from a Marketing team member last week. Please continue to contribute to this conversation byย providing your thoughts on the post by June 13th.

The team has had an administration project board for a couple of years. With the majority of project tracking now happening on the team blog, team reps are planning on cleaning out the board, leaving just meeting agenda and handbook feedback items.ย Are any team members still actively using this board?

  • Faculty program retirement

Weโ€™d like to share a proposal to retireย the Faculty program in its current form. This proposal was already discussed within the Faculty group, and since the overall consensus was to go ahead with retiring the program, weโ€™re now sharing the proposal with the whole team before we move forward with any of the suggested steps.

@bsanevans has proposed the below plan to the team and team agreed on that. Below are the @bsanevans proposal:

Firstly, we wanted to give a huge thank you for all your hard work in keeping things running so smoothly. Thanks to you all, weโ€™ve been able to set up team processes, catch up on a backlog of tasks, and set ourselves up for future success.

Over the past while, weโ€™ve observed that the Faculty program is due for a rethink. For example, many folks in the Faculty group are no longer active on the team at all, and there are many roles that are under-used and difficult to recruit for. As well, thereโ€™s a level of administrative overhead thatโ€™s somewhat complicated, and having to be part of the Faculty program may be seen by contributors as a barrier to doing certain types of work on the team. Finally, the now-established Guide Program serves as a welcoming path for people to get more involved in the team.

Weโ€™ve been thinking of ways to streamline things to make the team run more efficiently. In turn, this should free up time to focus more on higher-impact areas.

In thinking things over, weโ€™d like to suggest retiring the Faculty program in its current form. We propose the following steps:

  • Add a new area in the handbook, outlining the history ofย Learn.WordPress.orgย and the Training team. This section would also include the names of past team reps and Faculty members, so that folksโ€™ contributions are visible and recognized in the context of the Training teamโ€™s history.
  • Shift the work done by the current Faculty Admin group to a smaller group of administrators, starting with the team reps. Additional admins will be added over time, while the current admin needs of the team are reassessed. We will likely look for Training team members who have made consistent contributions over the last 6-12 months.
  • Update the handbook to remove the Faculty Program section.
  • Feedback on sharing experienced content creator processes with the team

@psykroย andย @west7ย have identified a need for content creators to view their content creation process. They plan to add the following links as additional resources to the โ€œCreate a Lessonโ€ page. They are also considering creating an informal video recording of these processes to support visual learners.ย We welcome any feedback or concerns you might have regarding this plan.

Looking for volunteers

  • Tutorial deprecation

To simplifyย Learn.WordPress.org, two content types will be gradually phased out: tutorials and lesson plans. As a first step, before launching the new site some outdated tutorials are going to be unpublished. A redirect will be added for each one, to send visitors to the most relevant alternative content.

@west7 andย @psykroย have already started going through all existing tutorials to note whether they should be kept, deprecated (unpublished), or updated.

We are looking for volunteers to continue going throughย the rest of the tutorialsย to indicate the status of each (keep/deprecate/update) and a potential redirect URLURL A specific web address of a website or web page on the Internet, such as a websiteโ€™s URL www.wordpress.org.ย If you are available, please make edits directly to the spreadsheet.

Note that some of this content is in languages other than English, but you could use an online translation tool to translate the tutorial title to help determine whether itโ€™s still relevant or has a more up-to-date equivalent tutorial or lesson.

  • The WordPress Projectโ€™s Video Thumbnail Generator

Meeting Note Takers

Meeting recap notes are one of the best ways to get started contributing to a team, and you can find details on how to write notes on thisย handbook page.

Looking for feedback

  • Would love everyoneโ€™s feedback with the introduction of the Learning Pathways.
    • What content are we obligated to leave on Learn? Ex. Classic editor
    • Until what version do we need to support?

@bsanevans suggests revisiting Learning Pathways annually to ensure they remain current. He believes that content irrelevant to the BlockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience. Editor should be removed, noting that the classic editor was removed from the coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. over five years ago. By reviewing WordPress version usage stats, and focusing on content for versions 6.4 and 6.5, which cover over 70% of installs, we can keep Learn up to date with the majority of use cases.

@psykro suggests yearly updates for Learning Pathways and every six months for newer features like the Site Editor and Interactivity APIAPI An API or Application Programming Interface is a software intermediary that allows programs to interact with each other and share data in limited, clearly defined ways. until they stabilize. He agrees that content related to features removed from the core should be removed. For WordPress versions, he proposes using a 5% usage baseline to determine content support, ensuring we cover versions 6.4 and 6.5 but also older versions if their usage exceeds 5%.

  • Trainingโ€™s 2024 goals โ€“ we asked this question last week and didnโ€™t get any feedback. I added a multiple-choice option if that is easier.
    • Weโ€™d like to send out a survey to the 10,000+ members of theย Meetup.comย Online Workshop groupย to get their input. What do folks think about these three questions?
    • What is currently working well with Online Workshops?
    • What would you like to see changed with Online Workshops?
    • Do you have any suggestions for future Online Workshop topics?

Looking for volunteers

Training Team Mission

The WordPress training teamย helps people learnย to use, extend, and contribute to WordPress through synchronous and asynchronous learning as well as downloadable lesson plans for instructors to use in live environments, viaย learn.wordpress.org.

Iโ€™m new to the Training Team!

Thanks for joining! Please walk through our brand-new Onboarding Program. This will give you an overview of the team, help you set up the accounts you need to contribute, and even walk you through your first contribution!

We expect the onboarding program above to take 30-60 minutes. Once youโ€™ve completed onboarding, jump into these other activities to continue contributing!

Review published content and submit feedback

WordPress software continues to grow and new features get added all the time. Reviewing published content and updating content is important in keeping the Learn WordPress website current. Follow the team guide about reviewing published content to leave feedback about any content below. (Reviewing older content would be helpful!)

Submit new content topic ideas

Have a look through the Learn WordPress website. Are there any topics you feel would be great to add to the website? Come add your topic ideas to our GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the โ€˜pull requestโ€™ where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged be the repository owner. https://github.com/ repository from the button below:

I have experience working with the Training Team!

Thanks for joining! Depending on your interests, there are a few ways you can get involved. For each of the tasks below, the team handbook should help you with process specifics. But if you have any questions, feel free to reach out!

Thumbnail Creation Project

In preparation for theย relaunch of Learn.WordPress.org and Learning Pathwaysย scheduled for July, we need to create a large quantity of small graphics โ€“ called thumbnails โ€“ to serve as featured images for each course, lesson, and tutorial. This will create a visually appealing site that will entice learners to dive in and get started on their learning journey.

Content Creation

Are you interested in creating content? If so, then creating content related to WordPress 6.5, WordPress 6.5.2 and WordPress 6.5.3 releases are our priority today.

Start by searching for a piece of content youโ€™d like to work on in either the 6.5 project board , 6.5.2 project board, or 6.5.3 project board. Once found, comment on the GitHub issue so that we can assign it to you.

Content Translation

Are you interested in translating content? If so, then translating content related to the Localization Foundation project is our priority today. Do you speak Spanish, Japanese, German, French, Hindi, or Italian? Come help us localize content for either these five or our 8 other languages. There are a few courses about onboarding contributors specifically that will help in the WordPress mentorship program:

You can learn how to get started in content localization in this handbook page.

Content Reviews

Are you interested in editing content? If so, then reviewing content waiting to be published is our priority today.

Start by finding a piece of content to review in our content development board. This GitHub view has filtered all content waiting for reviews before it is published. Follow the teamโ€™s Guidelines for reviewing content and leave your reviews right there in GitHub.

Subject Matter Expert

Aย subject-matter expertย is someone who has extensive knowledge in a particular field or area and can provide advice, guidance, and direction in that subject. If you would like to help vet topics, please visit the Vetting Topic Ideas handbook page.

Triage Developer Issues

Are you a developer interested in working on issues for the Learn website? If so, then working through our Website Development project board is our priority today.

Start by reviewing issues โ€œIn Reviewโ€. Any help you can provide regarding issues โ€œIn Progressโ€ would be great, too. But in general, any attention you can give to any issue would be much appreciated.

If there are enough interested Developers, then we can also create a developer-focused working group so that they can focus on related issues.

Cross-team collaboration opportunitiesย ย

Discuss or share ideas of how the Training Team could collaborate more with other Make WordPress Teams such as Marketing, Documentation etc.

Before you leaveโ€ฆ

Weโ€™d love to hear what you achieved on the day. Before leaving the table, please submit the Contributor Day Attendee Feedback Form and respond to the relevant thread in Slack.

For context, these were featuresย #trainingย had requested as part of our content type consolidation efforts around the site relaunch happening this year.
  1. Adding an instructor notes section to lessons
  2. Adding lessons to multiple courses

Based on this information, Iโ€™d like to discuss next steps with the team.

  • Feature 1, I think weโ€™ll will want to work withย #metaย to still create this feature as part of the site redesign. But this should probably be done with as minimal custom development as possible to reduce future maintenance overhead.
  • Feature 2 is something I propose we reassess and consider alternatives for. Technically, I think Learning Pathways could still be launched without this.
  • The lesson page is getting a makeover too.ย Learn Designย (post by Joen) Please add your comments to the post.
  • I am updating the wording in theย Training team contributor badgeย reviewing section to make it more clear and add a link to the review template. • The team would like to prioritize using GPLGPL GPL is an acronym for GNU Public License. It is the standard license WordPress uses for Open Source licensing https://wordpress.org/about/license/. The GPL is a โ€˜copyleftโ€™ license https://www.gnu.org/licenses/copyleft.en.html. This means that derivative work can only be distributed under the same license terms. This is in distinction to permissive free software licenses, of which the BSD license and the MIT License are widely used examples.-compliant plugins, so at the moment weโ€™ve highlightedย Polylangย andย TranslatePressย as two possible options
      • TranslatePress seems to be theย better optionย between the two.
      • Ben raised this question with members of the metaMeta Meta is a term that refers to the inside workings of a group. For us, this is the team that works on internal WordPress sites like WordCamp Central and Make WordPress. team who are working on the Learn redesign, who indicated we would need to first have a more public community conversation around it, as it would mean installing the pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party on the .org infrastructure.

This is provided inย this Colab, as the Colab format is a great fit for this kind of content, since it allows providing BigQuery queries that can be run directly inside of it, and the results can be presented alongside the queries. Colab covers both potential coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. use-cases as well as plugin or theme use-cases.

Felix drafted aย Make Core post draft (public preview)ย  to share this Colab more broadly with the core developer audience.

Felix is wondering whether it could be included or embedded in another area more dedicated to this kind of resource, such asย learn.wordpress.org.

You can see all meetings scheduled onย this meeting calendar. If you are new to the Training Team, then come walk throughย our onboarding programย to get to know the team and how we work. And if you have questions, feel free to reach out in theย #trainingย Slack channelย at any time.

Looking for feedback: Thumbnails for the Learn redesign

Design has also created thumbnail templates to be used across multiple media assets used in the WordPress project. For the Training Team specifically, these would be used for course/lesson featured images on Learn, videos uploaded to YouTube, and Online Workshop thumbnails added to Meetup.com. The team would start using these thumbnails as part of the redesign work currently happening on Learn.

Please take a moment to generate thumbnails using the provided template and provide your feedback in the comments by April 19th.

Follow the instructions below to download the Figma file to your computer and generate images there.

  1. Create and login to your Figma account atย https://www.figma.com/
  2. Downloadย the template file.
  3. Import the file into Figma by going to the Figma homepage and clicking on โ€œImportโ€ in the top-right corner.
  4. Follow the directions described in the file to generate visuals.

Out of the templates provided, Training would be using the following:

  • Topic as image: Course/lesson featured images
  • Title only: Lesson video thumbnails on YouTube
  • Title and guest & Title and multiple guests: Online Workshop thumbnails on Meetup.com

Then, please leave your feedback below. Here are some questions that would be particularly helpful for the design team.

  1. Is the process clear? Suggestions on the copy and the step by step flow are very useful.
  2. Did you export the visuals as expected?
  3. Did you face any problem during the process? Which ones?
  4. Is any helpful information missing?

@cnormandigital, @davouid, and @sareiodata tested three different plugins and @sareiodata from TranslatePress offered premium license for testing. @piyopiyofox is going to contact with Polylang team if they offer premium license too.

@devmuhib has volunteered to start drafting what this might look like,ย If anyone would like to assist Muhibul with creating the first draft. @freewebmentor has also volunteered to support @devmuhib.

Learning Pathways and site redesign

@bsanevans has reached out to the design team. Theyโ€™ve said they should have a completed design ready for the Training Team to check by the end of this week.

We havenโ€™t heard back from them yet, so letโ€™s hope we hear from them in the next day or two.

Faculty Updates

@devmuhib โ€“ Engaged in validating content feedback, clearing HelpScout tickets, contributing to learning pathway content, and assisting in content translation.

@zoonini โ€“ Facilitated onboarding of a new guide, Prem Tiwari, matching them with a mentee and also pairing two individuals with another guide. Conducted an online workshop titled โ€œUntangling Templates.

@freewebmentor โ€“ Facilitated multiple team meetings to discuss ongoing tasks and projects. Translated over nine tutorials into Hindi, expanding accessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both โ€œdirect accessโ€ (i.e. unassisted) and โ€œindirect accessโ€ meaning compatibility with a personโ€™s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accessibility). Successfully acquired my first mentee as a guide.

@sumitsingh โ€“ Engaged in onboarding new contributors as guides. Reviewed meeting notes for project alignment. Approved Hindi translation strings and verified tutorial translations into Hindi. Provided assistance to team members.

@cnormandigital โ€“ Conducted testing for the Polylang pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. Worked on the Intermediate Theme Development Learning Path lesson focused on โ€œPatternsโ€ and prepared for the upcoming lesson on โ€œStyle Variations.โ€

@annezazu โ€“ Went through the current open for review courses to see what I could help give feedback on andย opened an issue aroundย tips & tricks for patterns but closed it after learning about another piece underway that Iโ€™ll review!

@jdy68 โ€“ Reviewed the tutorial โ€œBuilding a home page with a blockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. Proceeded with publishing the tutorial. Initiated the translation of the tutorialโ€™s transcription into French.

@eboxnet โ€“ I am going through a few abandoned translations in Greek and trying to get them finished.

@piyopiyofox โ€“ Collaborated with @chaion07 to organize a series of online workshops aimed at training Contributor DayContributor Day Contributor Days are standalone days, frequently held before or after WordCamps but they can also happen at any time. Open Discussions

And finally, open discussions! Does anyone have any topics theyโ€™d like to discuss with the team today?

Do folks have any ideas for how we can make our meetings more engaging?

@devmuhib โ€“ suggested to pull traffic from Youtube. @gusa โ€“ As a participant or lurker in several channels, it seems like participation (sync and async) is down across all teams (that have regular meetings). Think implementing some of the recommended action items in thisย Five for the Future proposal.

@digitalchild โ€“ I think one of the reasons is that the time is too early/late for some people. I noticed there was a decline in participation since moving to the current timeslot. @manukk โ€“ Maybe we can pass on an email reminder to all members of the group in slack till the count comes up. @digitalchild โ€“ Email reminders can be quite intrusive and if people havenโ€™t opted in for it then we canโ€™t send them.
