History of the Training Team

Team mission

The Training Team was founded in 2013 at WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. San Francisco, a precursor to the flagship WordCamp US. First formed in response to a need from meetupMeetup All local/regional gatherings that are officially a part of the WordPress world but are not WordCamps are organized through https://www.meetup.com/. A meetup is typically a chance for local WordPress users to get together and share new ideas and seek help from one another. Searching for ‘WordPress’ on meetup.com will help you find options in your area. organizers for new ideas for in-person gatherings, the team initially focused on creating lesson plans for meetup organizers to be able to teach WordPress and related topics easily, with little preparation. The lesson plans were hosted on GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the ‘pull request’ where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged be the repository owner. https://github.com/ (See archived site).

The Learn WordPress site launched in mid-2020, when the team’s mandate expanded. As the COVID-19 pandemic continued and the need for online learning accelerated after in-person meetups had stopped, the team shifted focus and started producing materials such as tutorials (previously known as “workshops”), lessons, and courses geared to learners of all levels. Online Workshops (formerly Social Learning Spaces/”discussion groups”) also launched, with the launch of the Learn WordPress Online group on Meetup.com. Find a list of all contributors to the 2020 version of Learn WordPress in this post.

With its relaunch in 2024, Learn WordPress’s focus is now on courses – collections of lessons – organized into Learning Pathways. These paths allow learners in four groups – Users, Developers, and later Designers and Contributors – to move from beginner, though intermediate, and finally advanced levels in their chosen area of interest.
