WordCamp Europe Contributor Day 2023 Recap

Onboarded 6 new contributors to the training team
Worked on triaging new Learn.WordPress.orgWordPress.org The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https://wordpress.org/ website issues
Reviewed of some existing tutorial and course content
Had some informative feedback from a WordPress beginner, as they tried to navigate the Learn WordPress site to find tutorials, which has been logged as Content Feedback
Gathered feedback from one who instructed WordPress at a college/university level on the support needed for training materials and official standards
Had some great discussions around how to build learning content, especially how we can look at breaking the process of tutorial creation into more manageable, collaborative tasks
Helped a training team contributor with setting up a local development environment using the wordpress-develop GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the ‘pull request’ where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged be the repository owner. https://github.com/ repository
Added training team reps to the wptrainingteam org in GitHub
Met with Polyglots Multilingual Community around translation efforts across Docs, Training, WPTV, and more. Discussed GlotPress for sites and working in unison for Phase 4 multilingual.
Participated in New Contributor Mentor program for how Training can support the efforts with courses AND highlighted the Training Team Locale Ambassador initiative

I joined in discussion about GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler. It uses ‘blocks’ to add richness rather than shortcodes, custom HTML etc. https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/ blockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience.

It’s my first time joining a virtual Contributor DayContributor Day Contributor Days are standalone days, frequently held before or after WordCamps but they can also happen at any time. They are events where people get together to work on various areas of https://make.wordpress.org/ There are many teams that people can participate in, each with a different focus. https://2017.us.wordcamp.org/contributor-day/ https://make.wordpress.org/support/handbook/getting-started/getting-started-at-a-contributor-day/., so today I mostly just joined the discussion and saw how we can do a contributor day virtually.

Besides this, I think I will create the first draft for this week’s Training team meeting (the agenda: https://github.com/WordPress/Learn/issues/1613), and then continue my unfinished Tutorial translation, if time.

People seemed to love the online workshop. Let’s continue that every time! Having a host run it remotely, with a local attendee joining in for a little, seemed to be a good set up.

Very positive! I really enjoyed it. The onboarding information available online was very helpful and enabled me to get started right away. There was an excellent ratio of leaders to attendees, so it was easy to get my questions answered.

  @piyopiyofox In answer to your question, most of the contributors I assisted completed their tasks successfully on the day. However, there are two items I think we should keep an eye on.
  
  Firstly, I feel that this feedback from a WordPress beginner, as they tried to navigate the Learn WordPress site is vital to consider. For some context, this person was a WCEU volunteer and works for an agency (I think) heading up the marketing team. This person had no specific WordPress experience but hoped to be able to use Learn WordPress to both, well, learn WordPress, but also teach others in their company WordPress. I think their feedback is valuable and we should keep this in mind both when considering learning pathways, but also with the upcoming resigned project.
  
  Secondly, it would be great to see the information shared by the person who instructed WordPress at a college/university level on the support needed for training materials and official standards. I believe @courane01 has this and should be sharing it soon.
  
  I can’t comment on the Polyglots Multilingual Community discussions or the New Contributor Mentor program discussions as @courane01 attended those, so it might be best to connect with her on that.
