Brainstorm – WordCamp Asia 2023 Contributor Day

Ben Evans said: Team reps and contributor dayContributor Day Contributor Days are standalone days, frequently held before or after WordCamps but they can also happen at any time. They are events where people get together to work on various areas of https://make.wordpress.org/ There are many teams that people can participate in, each with a different focus. https://2017.us.wordcamp.org/contributor-day/ https://make.wordpress.org/support/handbook/getting-started/getting-started-at-a-contributor-day/. table leads have started discussions around Contributor Day at WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. Skill Management platform

Question asked to @Courtney and @Flo SkillDisplay for any updates.

@Flo SkillDisplay‘s suggestion for the next steps stays as following:

  • Short Term: Are we allowed to list the skill definitions with the WordPress logo after a quality check for the existing skill definitions from the WP team? (Quick win, better acceptance with educational institutions, feedback on automatic suggestions of resources from LearnWordpress)
  • Medium Term: Possible cooperation on certification topics

Open Discussions

How should we track content that needs updating?
The team is creating more and more content! But this means there is more content that could have outdated information in it. We’re particularly interested in hearing your ideas regarding how we can best track courses and localized content for necessary updates. (Raise by @courane01 in Slack conversation)

New Proposal

@Amit Patel Proposed a new project plan
  • Creating custom GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler. It uses ‘blocks’ to add richness rather than shortcodes, custom HTML etc. https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/ blocks for meeting recap notes, faculty meetings, onboarding posts etc. This will help to speed up adding/editing content part.
  • Coordinating with codebase team members and adding metaMeta Meta is a term that refers to the inside workings of a group. For us, this is the team that works on internal WordPress sites like WordCamp Central and Make WordPress. fields for every post and page for training and learn websites.
  • Setting up and enabling language switcher options somewhere in headerHeader The header of your site is typically the first thing people will experience. The masthead or header art located across the top of your page is part of the look and feel of your website. It can influence a visitor’s opinion about your content and you/ your organization’s brand. It may also look different on different screen sizes. and footer navigation for learn and training websites. This will help to map same content with their language variations.

@sagarladani , @karthickmurugan, @pitamdey, @baroliyamayur, @askaryabbas showed their interest in creating the custom blocks.

Thoughts from Ben Evans

Creating custom Gutenberg blocks for meeting recap notes, faculty meetings, onboarding posts etc. This will help to speed up adding/editing content part.

I see three ways of doing the same thing have been proposed in this thread.

  • Reusable blocks
  • Patterns
  • Custom blocks

Reusable blocks seem like the easiest to manage to me. Patterns and Custom blocks would each require dev work every time we want to update the style or format.

I would be interested to hear how long it currently takes contributors to make each of those documents you brought up. Maybe the issue is that our current templates are too complex, or require too much editing, and could benefit from an overhaul? Updating reusable blocks wouldn’t require the dev work, and might still achieve the goal you wrote – speed up editing.

Shall we make linking Learn content back to GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the ‘pull request’ where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged be the repository owner. https://github.com/ standard practice?

Pooja Derashri said: I agree with this point,, so that finding a content will be easy task.

Jonathan said: This is a great idea and I agree we should use and standardise this. I was not aware of it when I started creating content. This could be something we add to the tutorial and lesson plan checklists.

Ben Evans said: While I like the idea in principal, Jonathan, I think feedback/error logs should be collected as new issues, not as additional comments on the initial creation issue.

The original issue is great to collect feedback until a piece is published. But if future feedback/comments are left on the issue, then we are presuming the original content creator is still involved in the team and is able to act on that feedback. For a while, this would be true. But if we receive feedback on “old” content, then the original creator may not be around any longer.

That’s why I think feedback after something has been published should be left as new issues, so that they are visible to anyone in the team at that time.

We’re looking for AMER/EMEA meetings facilitators!

  • We’re looking for facilitators for the AMER/EMEA meetings. Let a team repTeam Rep A Team Rep is a person who represents the Make WordPress team to the rest of the project, make sure issues are raised and addressed as needed, and coordinates cross-team efforts. know if you’re interested.
  • Another option is, since team meetings are held async anyway, that we host the meeting at an APAC time each week, and members in other timezones can contribute in their own time. Office Hours could still be used for the real-time connection

Shall we combine Coffee Hours and Office Hours, and host these at the same time as team meetings on alternating weeks?

  • Currently, the team hosts Coffee Hours and Office Hours separately to team meetings. These two are similar, and can be confusing to new contributors. Shall we combine the two?
  • Proposal: One hour is booked each week for each timezone. These hours are used for either a team meeting or Coffee/Office Hour. This means, one only needs to allocate one hour-long time slot each week to join the team gatherings, rather than two. This time slot does not change from week to week.

@Amit Patel and @Karthick – Agreed to it and it will be a zoom call meeting, but we can also monitor Slack for async chat
