Looking for feedback: Handbook page about content localization

The Training Team has wanted to make contributing localized content for Learn WordPress easier. As of today, you can now find a page in our handbook that will walk you through both translating existing content, and creating new content in locales other than English!

New handbook page: Content Localization

The workflows listed are a combination of processes currently used by Training Team members, and some new ideas to better track contributions and maintain consistency across translated content. The team is looking for contributors to try these new workflows and help us identify how we can make them even better.

Please share your experience creating localized content for Learn WordPress with these new workflows in the comments of this post. If you have any suggested improvements to the newly created handbook pages, please share those below, too! We will continue to update the processes as we receive feedback.

First of all: the translation of Learn WordPress is a very nice project, but it doesn’t seem possible to me via translate.wordpress.orgWordPress.org The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https://wordpress.org/.

I am one of the GTEGeneral Translation Editor General Translation Editor – One of the polyglots team leads in a geographic region https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/. Further information at https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/handbook/glossary/#general-translation-editor. of the fr_FR locale and co-leader of the French WordPress documentation team. So I participated to the implementation of the workflow for the translation of the HelpHub documentation and to the management of the team.

I will present this project at the next team meeting and I think it will be possible to find people interested in this project, ready to test the workflow proposed in Content Localization
In any case, on a personal basis, I will try to get involved.

However, the first thing I would suggest to local teams is to translate the Content Localization page into the different languages to facilitate the understanding of workflows.

I will come back to you soon to give you our first feedbacks and would be happy to integrate the faculty program in the future, if it’s possible.

  I agree! It would be great if this was somehow possible in future. But for the time being, we’re trying to figure out another method that would work.

  That’s a good idea. Do you think we should have a couple people (like yourself!) try out the workflows first to see how it goes before getting translations made? My personal guess is it might be difficult to come back and update the translated documents, so I want to make sure any initial revisionsRevisions The WordPress revisions system stores a record of each saved draft or published update. The revision system allows you to see what changes were made in each revision by dragging a slider (or using the Next/Previous buttons). The display indicates what has changed in each revision. are made on the original handbook page, and then make translations.

    So we discussed translating Learn WP content at our monthly meeting, and we’re up for a call for contributors.
    
    I have started the translation of the Content Localization page into French, it will be available in this handbook.
    
    I also think it would be nice to test the workflow to see if it works before distributing it to the different locales. I will try to translate a content and follow this workflow, and find someone else to test it too.
    
    As an alternative tool to Google IDocs, suggest Framapad (which has the merit of being open sourceOpen Source Open Source denotes software for which the original source code is made freely available and may be redistributed and modified. Open Source **must be** delivered via a licensing model, see GPL. like WP)

Frankly, going through Google Docs and GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the ‘pull request’ where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged be the repository owner. https://github.com/ rather than creating directly on WP, it’s complicating things and the best way to make contributors run away…

  Thanks for your comment, Bruno! Writing directly into a post would work for some of Learn’s content types, and is something I agree we should consider where possible.
  
  For other content types, such as Online Workshop video subtitles (subtitle files) and Tutorials (slides and video recordings), this won’t work, though, as the resources are only embedded to Learn WordPress once completed and are not created with WordPress. Thank you for putting together very clear documentation for polyglots to contribute, and opening it up for feedback!

Japanese community has been translating HelpHub. @atachibana wrote the instruction using Google spreadsheet (to keep track of progress), and directly using wp-admin (to write translated content). Contributors have “HelpHub Editor” access in wp-admin.

Recently, another translation project got started to create Core Contributor Handbook in Japanese by @wildworks. He is using GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the ‘pull request’ where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged be the repository owner. https://github.com/ to manage the project.

For the case of Learn WordPress, I think the process you described should work okay. And I understand the GitHub issue is needed for training team to keep track of things.

A few things to note:
Please @-menton your content reviewer in the GitHub issue

Unfortunately not all GTEs list their GitHub account on their profile. You may want to add what to do in case the translator doesn’t know GTE’s username. (I guess the section below serves the purpose, but you may want to be a little more explicit?)
When reaching out to Locale Managers, it’s a good idea to do so in the #polyglots SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/. channel. This keeps the conversation public, and others interested in helping out will be able to jump in, too.

Also, not all GTEs have Slack account, so I’d add “it’s a good idea to do so in the #polyglots Slack channel or Polyglots P2P2 P2 or O2 is the term people use to refer to the Make WordPress blog. It can be found at https://make.wordpress.org/.”

Once this process is set in stone, Polyglots TeamPolyglots Team Polyglots Team is a group of multilingual translators who work on translating plugins, themes, documentation, and front-facing marketing copy. https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/. could encourage GTEs to add their GitHub username to their profile. It’s needed for sharing feedback for other projects like GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler. It uses ‘blocks’ to add richness rather than shortcodes, custom HTML etc. https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/ and some MetaMeta Meta is a term that refers to the inside workings of a group. For us, this is the team that works on internal WordPress sites like WordCamp Central and Make WordPress. projects too.

I’d also talk about the locale glossary and style guides. Since, it would be silly if we use it everywhere apart from lessons.

  Good point! We thought that, too, and added links to the Glossary and Style Guides in the second paragraph of the handbook page. Let us know if you have ideas about how we could highlight this more.

Hi all!

It is not clear to me why in the “Request a review from someone else who speaks your language” sub-section the two numbered dots refer to “translations”: shouldn’t they be about native language content?
Main section is “Creating new content in languages other than English”.
