# Social Learning Spaces Streaming Platforms

[[

Social Learning Spaces are seeing considerable traction with attendees. You can
find the calendar of events at [https://learn.wordpress.org/social-learning/.](https://learn.wordpress.org/social-learning/)
This also appears by default in the WordPress Events and News widgetWidget A WordPress
Widget is a small block that performs a specific function. You can add these widgets
in sidebars also known as widget-ready areas on your web page. WordPress widgets
were originally created to provide a simple and easy-to-use way of giving design
and structure control of the WordPress theme to the user. inside ever WP Admin Dashboard.

Questions arose around expanding the use of the platform. Training was asked to
consider including these events onto the calendar:

 1. [Gutenberg Developer Hour Series](https://make.wordpress.org/core/2021/10/07/proposal-gutenberg-developer-hours-series-of-events/)
 2. [Creating a Block-based theme from scratch](https://www.twitch.tv/ryanwelchercodes)

We approved GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface
for WordPress. The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content,
making writing rich content much simpler. It uses ‘blocks’ to add richness rather
than shortcodes, custom HTML etc. [https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/](https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/)
Developer Hour Series, as Birgit is already vetted by community deputies and this
is an initiative begun in CoreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress.
The Core Development Team builds WordPress.. It would be hosted using the existing
methods with MeetupMeetup All local/regional gatherings that are officially a part
of the WordPress world but are not WordCamps are organized through [https://www.meetup.com/](https://www.meetup.com/).
A meetup is typically a chance for local WordPress users to get together and share
new ideas and seek help from one another. Searching for ‘WordPress’ on meetup.com
will help you find options in your area. + Zoom.

For content that may be broadcast in a new manner, such as using a Twitch stream,
we’d like additional guidelines to be included in the [team handbook](https://make.wordpress.org/training/handbook/social-learning/).

Questions to be considered:

 1. How much branding is appropriate? Custom Zoom branding, backgrounds, etc.
 2. Is it permitted during the broadcast to mention “follow/subscribe to this channel
on Twitch/Facebook/Twitter whatever to know when I go live again”?
 3. What if users need to enter an email to view the broadcast?
 4. What if the additional streaming platform requires an RSVP as well?
 5. Share additional questions in the comments below

This post will remain open until January 14. From there, a summary will be presented
to the team and additional guidelines added to the team handbook.

 3. Thanks for posting this! Can you explain the limitation or guidelines against #
     2 – subscribing and #3 – collecting an email? I believe MeetupMeetup All local/

like subscribing to the group) and the Learn Zoom account used for events does
if the user enters it. I’m wondering if maybe @hlashbrooke can comment on how
Meetup and Zoom were selected for the original discussion group platforms.

      * If the account being mentioned is owned by .org then this shouldn’t be an issue.
However, if it follows a personal account or a business account then you’d
be subscribing to that person or business. In addition, if using your own platform(
not one owned by Learn/.org) is it ok for the company to ask you to register?
You would be subscribing to their mailing list, not Learn/.org.

purely because they were the tools we already had available. Meetup has a built-
in RSVP function, and Zoom has easy video calls, so it just made sense to use
        them.
      * I am _very_ happy to use other options and would be really keen to see us move
away from Meetup entirely. Having the SLS events on Learn itself is a great
help here – the only thing we’re lacking if we switch away from Meetup is a
central mailing list of all people interested in SLS events.

 7. Some initial thoughts:
 8. _How much branding is appropriate? Custom Zoom branding, backgrounds, etc.

     –
     > earing a company-branded t-shirt might be okay, as well as mentioning where
they work (that helps provide context around their potential expertise, skills,
and bias). But backgrounds or other call-outs might be too much because it is
hard to set specific guidelines… many zoom backgrounds could be distracting, for
example. It’s more along the lines of acknowledging where they work vs promoting
     where they work.
 9. _Is it permitted during the broadcast to mention “follow/subscribe to this channel
on Twitch/Facebook/Twitter whatever to know when I go live again”?

     –> I am not
in favor of this… because I think that if you are interested in following/subscribing
to this person, people already know how to do that. You put their name in a search
box and look at the results… so I think prohibiting this is okay.
 10. What if users need to enter an email to view the broadcast?
      _–>I’m not a fan
of this… I don’t think we need to have folks building commercial contact lists._
 11. What if the additional streaming platform requires an RSVP as well?
      _–>I think
this is okay… e.g., if you are going to watch a live stream on Facebook, like
for State of the WordState of the Word This is the annual report given by Matt
Mullenweg, founder of WordPress at WordCamp US. It looks at what we’ve done, what
we’re doing, and the future of WordPress. [https://wordpress.tv/tag/state-of-the-word/](https://wordpress.tv/tag/state-of-the-word/).,
     you’ll need a Facebook account. _

 14. My general feeling about including these things in the SLS calendar is that if
it’s online, all about WordPress, follows the [brand usage guidelines](https://make.wordpress.org/training/handbook/guidelines/brand-usage-guidelines/),
and the facilitator passes basic vetting, then there’s no reason why it shouldn’t
     be included.
 15. That leaves the question of how do we vet facilitators, but luckily we can borrow
from the Community team in terms of criteria, which we already have done for workshop
presenters. I added a handbook page specifically for SLS facilitators that is
essentially a link to the existing docs: [https://make.wordpress.org/training/handbook/social-learning/reviewing-facilitator-applications/](https://make.wordpress.org/training/handbook/social-learning/reviewing-facilitator-applications/)
 16. So to answer your questions from the post:
 17. a. If the person/company has passed vetting then it means they are GPLGPL GPL is
an acronym for GNU Public License. It is the standard license WordPress uses
         for Open Source licensing [https://wordpress.org/about/license/](https://wordpress.org/about/license/).
The GPL is a ‘copyleft’ license [https://www.gnu.org/licenses/copyleft.en.html](https://www.gnu.org/licenses/copyleft.en.html).
This means that derivative work can only be distributed under the same license
terms. This is in distinction to permissive free software licenses, of which
the BSD license and the MIT License are widely used examples. compatible, so
I don’t have an issue with regular branding in their work (Zoom backgrounds,
t-shirt, opening/closing slide with company info).
      b. Saying something like “like/subscribe for updates” is fine – they’re spending
their time on this, so getting new followers is perfectly acceptable. If the
CTA is to spend money then that changes things and I don’t think we should allow
that, but a basic CTA to follow/like/subscribe is fine.
      c. Right now we require signing up to Meetup.com to RSVP and get the Zoom link,
so asking for an email address to sign up isn’t new. So long as the sign up has
a clearly published privacy policy (which pretty much everywhere does) then I
         don’t have a problem.
      d. It’s OK if the other platform has an RSVP/registration itself. In fact, I’m 100%
happy to bypass using Meetup.com altogether.
 18. **tl;dr:**
If someone passes vetting and agrees to (and follows) the brand usage
guidelines, then the platform they’re on doesn’t matter. The one thing we will
need to add to the handbook is clarifying what is acceptable with regards to saying“
     like/subscribe/follow for more”.

      * I’ve drafted a new handbook page that borrows (i.e. blatantly copies 😄) from
        the Community Team handbook: [https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Sk-KZ8su3tEsXrCVjKzpludmj904roGKaWmPEEG504I/edit](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Sk-KZ8su3tEsXrCVjKzpludmj904roGKaWmPEEG504I/edit)–
I’m happy to add this to the Training team handbook, so please share your thoughts
        on the doc!

 22. I inquired in [Accessibility](https://wordpress.slack.com/archives/C02RP4X03/p1644088999961359)
about Zoom vs Twitch as a comparison. Zoom was found to be more accessible than
Twitch. Other streaming players would have some accessibilityAccessibility Accessibility(
commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services,
or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design
ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility
with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accessibility) improvements, but others do not generally
offer live auto-captioning. While live captioning may not be as good as humans
in real-time, it is better than no captioning.
 23. As we look to offering Social Learning Spaces in additional languages, I’d like
to get a feel of how many nations are blocking sites like Youtube and if they
have alternate preferred platforms that remain accessible. We’ve seen an uptick
recently in requests for content in additional languages. Perhaps Polyglots folks
may have some insights for that.
