Automated Greeting in the #training Slack Channel

It is possible that we could set up a Slackbot to send a greeting when new people join the #training channel. (Hat tip to the #design team for this idea.) What would we want to see in that message?

Here’s a mockup of how that text would look as a SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/. message:

There’s too much information in that message, much of that text is redundant as the user is already in the #training channel, much more of that text should also be moved to the #training “channel details” section of the channel.

Something more along the lines of this: (Though I’d like to see at least half of that last bullet point remove so that it spans no more than two lines)

(We can also use some more emoji, or dashicons in these messages.)

p.s No promises here but I’ve been writing the bot to add “Welcome messages for WordPress Slack”, it works really well, it needs a bit more testing, once that’s done then a discussion with the #metaMeta Meta is a term that refers to the inside workings of a group. For us, this is the team that works on internal WordPress sites like WordCamp Central and Make WordPress. team to decide if it will be implemented or not will be had.

Also, it’s my understanding that it would be possible to send this info as a DM and not directly in the channel, but perhaps I’m mistaken.

I love this so much. I think if we can figure out how to get it to send as a DM that would be perfect. I like @netweb‘s edits. A revision to that last bullet to make it shorter, per his observation:

  @bethsoderberg, @juliekuehl A DM is pretty intrusive, a message in the channel is noisy and spammy, as such the current plan (if it does go ahead) is to use an ephemeral message, only the user who joined the channel sees the message within the channel itself, it will disappear after a short time.

    I like this a lot. If the bullets refer to the buttons below, then they should probably appear in the same order. As it is, the first bullet refers to the last button. The second refers to the first. Etc.

I have been thinking about my first experience with the Training site, SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/., GitGit Git is a free and open source distributed version control system designed to handle everything from small to very large projects with speed and efficiency. Git is easy to learn and has a tiny footprint with lightning fast performance. Most modern plugin and theme development is being done with this version control system. https://git-scm.com/., and now TrelloTrello Project management system using the concepts of boards and cards to organize tasks in a sane way. This is what the make.wordpress.com/marketing team uses for example: https://trello.com/b/8UGHVBu8/wp-marketing.. During my first meeting, I did feel halfway lost, not fully. I felt like the blog and some information on GithubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the ‘pull request’ where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged be the repository owner. https://github.com/ had a lot of information that I knew that I would need, but I wasn’t exactly sure how it all worked together and how to start. I believe something like the text below will help the newbie. I don’t believe this would be for the Slack channel. I believe the target might be the first tab of the Getting Started page or maybe it could be combined with the current information on that page.

There is a lot of information and many processes. Here is an overview of the people, processes, and tools.

People
- Julie Kuehl and Paul Barthmaier are your primary contacts. (Add contact info)
- The rest of the team can be seen on Slack by viewing the Member list in the #training group.
Processes
The team’s work consists of the following primary and secondary processes:
- Organizing the team and documentation
- Moving existing lessons from the WordPress.orgWordPress.org The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https://wordpress.org/ site to GitHub
- Creating, Editing, Testing, and Finalizing New Lessons using GitHub and the Lesson Plan Template
- Tracking the progress of the work
- Meeting weekly on Slack to discuss team efforts
- Contributing by responding to the WordPress.org Training blog
Tools
You will need a WordPress.org, Slack, Trello, and Githum account.
- WordPress.org is used to communicate through the blog and (?) will also house links to the lesson plans. It also has lesson structure details and information about the team’s processes.
- Slack is used for meetings and communications. It is the most direct way to communicate with the team. (Julie is this true?)
- GitHub is where the lesson plans are stored, updated, and where versions are tracked. There are 2 main projects one for developing new lesson plans and one for moving lesson plans from the wordpress.org to GitHub. (Add Paul’s videos.) Learn the following terms: repository, clone, pull request, etc. Also learn the markdown language.
- Trello is where the tasks are tracked. Tasks include the lessons that need to be developed, edited, tested, and more.
Read the Getting Started site, setup your tools, and learn the language of GitHub before your first meeting, you will start with a good foundation. The team can answer additional questions during the meeting and get you started on your first projects.
