We’re focused on using FTPFTP FTP is an acronym for File Transfer Protocol which is a way of moving computer files from one computer to another via the Internet. You can use software, known as a FTP client, to upload files to a server for a WordPress website. https://codex.wordpress.org/FTP_Clients., but FTP is insecure. for all the sections, should we also include SFTPSFTP SFTP is an acronym for Secure File Transfer Protocol: A standard protocol to move computer files from one host to another over the Internet with enhanced security. as (S)FTP and then in the teacher notes, mention the need to discuss how FTP is insecure and they should use SFTP if available?

  I’m going through https://make.wordpress.org/training/handbook/user-lessons/high-level-overview/. There are a few things that need updating, at a basic level (I’ll go back with a higher-level view). The numbers of themes and plugins are way out of date and are much higher now. There is inconsistent use of Oxford commas. I think Permissions needs minor work. For example, it seems to imply that Subscriber users can’t read public posts, stuff like that.
  
  The Style Guide says “If you really do need to use an abbreviation, use the full, expanded version first, followed by the abbreviation in parentheses (brackets).” But this lesson pretty consistently uses “…are actually called top level domains or TLDs.” with the full term and acronym italicized. I assume those should be fixed.
  
  I made some minor changes, such as Oxford commas and to use the proper casing for MySQLMySQL MySQL is a relational database management system. A database is a structured collection of data where content, configuration and other options are stored. https://www.mysql.com/..

  1. This does create a disconnect between the earlier section and this, so i would still advocate for the changes I suggested above.
  2. I would suggest adding a note to https://make.wordpress.org/training/handbook/user-lessons/how-to-install-wordpress-on-a-server/#teacher-notes that mentions suggesting to participants that if their host does not offer SFTP, they should consider a different host that provides SFTP access. If we’re going to start pushing hosts to provide httpsHTTPS HTTPS is an acronym for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure. HTTPS is the secure version of HTTP, the protocol over which data is sent between your browser and the website that you are connected to. The 'S' at the end of HTTPS stands for 'Secure'. It means all communications between your browser and the website are encrypted. This is especially helpful for protecting sensitive data like banking information., then we should be doing the same for SFTP.

The Theme Internationalization LP, written by @danstramer includes information on WordPress Internationalization (written for 4.7 edits) and also information about choosing a theme that matches your language (and what will happen if you choose a theme that is not in your language). For Today I had him write it all in one LP, but we should consider if the content should be split up into two.

Using Content Editor Section
BlockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience. elements info is in this section. May be better to put that with the other Block elements in a section on its own.

Bulleted list section instructs the teacher to have the student do something, that’s inconsistent with the rest of the document – easy fix, will do now

Linking to Content
Red box in the screenshot includes the toolbar toggle. Screenshot is out of date, doesn’t include the spellcheck. – can’t do today

Remove link
Would be helpful to say that removing the link leaves the text – can add today

Insert Read More TagTag Tag is one of the pre-defined taxonomies in WordPress. Users can add tags to their WordPress posts along with categories. However, while a category may cover a broad range of topics, tags are smaller in scope and focused to specific topics. Think of them as keywords used for topics discussed in a particular post.
Would be helpful to add more info about what this does.

Headings
Mentioning accessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accessibility) benefits of using headers properly could be helpful – I’m not sure I’m the one to write this, but adding it might be helpful

Not clear whether it indents the block or the whole line, will fix today

Exercises & Quiz
Should prob add a few more exercises and quiz questions, is there a number of these we are going for in each lesson plan?

I think on https://make.wordpress.org/training/handbook/user-lessons/pages-vs-posts/ that the sub-heading “Assets” should be changed to “Things You Will Need On Hand” to make it clear what those things are. Any thoughts or disagreement on that?

  Not sure what the leads think, but if it is changed in this lesson plan, it would probably need to be changed in all of the lesson plans for consistency and that might be a ton of work.

I created the google doc below that outlines my changes. But I did want to mention these important items:

IMPORTANT NOTES –
- The H3 and H4 are designated properly on this page, but the style is showing them identical. Not sure if the style can change to show the different.
- I really dislike the question,”Which of the following appears in the Activity widgetWidget A WordPress Widget is a small block that performs a specific function. You can add these widgets in sidebars also known as widget-ready areas on your web page.   Julie, I finished https://make.wordpress.org/training/handbook/user-lessons/intro-to-common-plugins/ and have some major changes that I want to note:
  
  Major changes to note:
  1. The comment is made in the teacher’s notes that all plugins mentioned are free. I added a sentence to explain that many of the plugins may have a paid “premium version”. Here is what was added. “It is worth noting that while all of the plugins mentioned are free, they may have a “premium” version available at a cost. This is common for plugins to offer a free version and then sell a premium version that has more advanced functionality.”
  
  2. Add this section to Backups – “It is a wise to practice backing up your site and restoring it from a backup. A backup is not useful if the restore process does not work or if you do not know how to restore it when needed. Planning ahead is key with backups.”
  
  3. The exercises was just a bulleted list. I expanded it significantly.
  
  4. The final exercise was Install a contact form pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. I removed this one because I am a little unclear as to whether the user has already learned how to install plugins yet. I think that this lesson comes before the installation plugin.
