Welcome to the Themes team!

We are a group of volunteers who review and approve themes submitted to be included in the official WordPress Theme directory.

We do license, security, and code quality reviews.

We help build and maintain default themes.

The team maintains the official Theme Review Requirements, the Theme Unit Test Data, and helps the documentation team with the Theme Developer Handbook.

We maintain the WPThemeReview Standard for PHP_CodeSniffer, the Theme Sniffer plugin and Theme Check

We have code packages for themes available for use on Github and Packagist

GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler. - @scruffian noted a related issue regarding child themes. He has a PR open to fix it.
There’s a PR in progress that would add the ability to export a site’s global style settings into a theme.jsonJSON JSON, or JavaScript Object Notation, is a minimal, readable format for structuring data. It is used primarily to transmit data between a server and web application, as an alternative to XML. file.

The group discussed future ideas for displaying block themes in the Theme Repository. Some ideas were:

Figuring out a way to highlight patterns that have been provided by the theme.
Allowing users to mix & match patterns to build their own theme.
This would likely be a longer-term project. It would be great to arrange a coordinated design effort around refreshing this area.

Also discussed was how to identify block themes. Themes should use the full-site-editing tag if they support Full Site Editing. It should not be used if the theme leverages theme.json but does not support Full Site Editing.

This issue discusses the possibility of a FSEFSE Short for Full Site Editing, a project for the Gutenberg plugin and the editor where a full page layout is created using only blocks.-compatible approach to starter content: https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/35680

Can I use CSSCSS CSS is an acronym for cascading style sheets. This is what controls the design or look and feel of a site. in the editor?
With FSE, is there a need to build custom themes the old way?
Do ACF work with FSE?
