Welcome to the Themes team!

We are a group of volunteers who review and approve themes submitted to be included in the official WordPress Theme directory.

We do license, security, and code quality reviews.

We help build and maintain default themes.

The primary focus of the team is to help theme authors transition to blockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience.-based themes.

Handbooks and review requirements

The team maintains the official Theme Review Requirements, the Theme Unit Test Data, and helps the documentation team with the Theme Developer Handbook.

Coding standards and plugins

We maintain the WPThemeReview Standard for PHP_CodeSniffer, the Theme Sniffer plugin and Theme Check

Code Packages

We have code packages for themes available for use on GitHub and Packagist

Hello world! Welcome to the last meeting of 2023.

The themes team meets regularly on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. This session marks the first meeting of December, also serving as the final one for the year 2023. Given that the next meeting falls around Christmas and New Year, we have decided not to schedule the gathering during the holiday period.

I have a couple of items to add to the agenda:

Topic #1:

@richtabor and I have discussed and both agree that we should split the current patterns documentation from the Features chapter into a top-level Patterns chapter. This is a change from the agreed-upon outline for the Theme Handbook. So, I want to ask if there would be any objections from the team on this change.

It’s worth noting that the current blockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience. patterns doc isn’t complete (see notes in ticket). It needs to be expanded into several sub-docs. Given that it’s a first-class WP feature, it makes sense to add it as a chapter to fully document everything about patterns.

Topic #2:

My team has been working on a Block Theme Examples repo. It’s currently under the Learn WP organization on GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the ‘pull request’ where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged be the repository owner. https://github.com/ but it likely to be moved to the WordPress organization. It shows code examples of various theme features and provides WP Playground demos. We would like to incorporate repo and Playground demo links into the handbook, if there are no objections to this.

I also want to highlight this as a project that I’d like to see the theming community involved in.
