Upcoming “Universal Themes” Hallway Hangout

Friday, May 14th at 14UTC, a group of folks working on blockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience.-based themes will have a virtual hallway hangout to chat about “Universal Themes” — a theme that aims to work in either classic (customizerCustomizer Tool built into WordPress core that hooks into most modern themes. You can use it to preview and modify many of your site’s appearance settings.) or FSEFSE Short for Full Site Editing, a project for the Gutenberg plugin and the editor where a full page layout is created using only blocks. contexts. It’s an open invite and you can RSVP by replying to this post or messaging me (@jffng) in the WordPress slackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. While the format and agenda is loose, the goal is to have an open conversation about the idea of “Universal Themes”, and talk about some theme code. Some topics and use cases that could be interesting to discuss:

  • How production themes can take advantage of new tools coming in 5.8.
  • Handling customizations (color, site logo, title, tagline, etc) in FSE or classic contexts.
  • Using block template parts in php templates to render as much of the theme as possible.
  • Supporting multiple navigation editing pathways with consideration for the navigation block and new navigation editor.
  • Using theme.jsonJSON JSON, or JavaScript Object Notation, is a minimal, readable format for structuring data. It is used primarily to transmit data between a server and web application, as an alternative to XML. to render most of the theme’s style opinions.

Please stop by and say hello if you’re interested and available! It will also be recorded and posted as a comment here afterwards.
