Welcome to the Themes team!

We are a group of volunteers who review and approve themes submitted to be included in the official WordPress Theme directory.

We do license, security, and code quality reviews.

We help build and maintain default themes.

The primary focus of the team is to help theme authors transition to blockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience.-based themes.

Handbooks and review requirements

The team maintains the official Theme Review Requirements, the Theme Unit Test Data, and helps the documentation team with the Theme Developer Handbook.

Coding standards and plugins

We maintain the WPThemeReview Standard for PHP_CodeSniffer, the Theme Sniffer plugin and Theme Check

Code Packages

We have code packages for themes available for use on Github and Packagist

New requirement: All theme text strings are to be translatable.
translation-ready tag is to be the gold standard so still used.

Will the new requirement for text strings affect existing old themes? Or does this new requirement only apply to new theme submissions?

I replied on Twitter, but I think it needs repeating here. All new themes and any updates to existing themes will fall under the requirement.

Edit: That’s how we treat all requirements, not just this one in particular.

  Not currently. I’m torn if this would belong here or in the theme developer handbook. We are certainly adding more resources here.

  I think the right place for the details would be the theme developer handbook. On this blog, we could write some tutorials if this is too much of an barrier to entry. I don’t think it will be, but we’ll see.

  We don’t handle the pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party repository and have no control over that. This is themes only.

I think it’s a good idea to think also about RTL ready.

  I don’t think we’re there yet. Making simple themes RTL ready isn’t hard. However, more complex themes being styled for RTL can be extremely difficult for someone who has never designed an actual, real live RTL Web site. Forcing RTL might be too big of a barrier to entry for new theme authors, at least at this point in time.
