Site logo and icon user testing

Two user tests were run on the latest patch for: #33755

    Tasks:

    1. Log into the site.
    2. Find where you would add a site logo.
    3. If you are struggling to find the place, you can find it under ‘Appearance’, then ‘Customise’ and ‘Site Identity’.
    4. Add a site logo. There are existing images you can use or you can upload one of your own.
    5. Add a site icon.

    Questions:

    1. How discoverable was the ability to add a site logo or site icon?
    2. Do you know the difference between a site icon and site logo?
    3. Would you use the site logo feature?
    4. Would you use the site icon feature?

    Notes:

I tried to enable success despite a leading note on where things were. I also have 3 potentials for closed answers in the questions. As we’d not had a survey, I took this as a chance to add them to gauge. If we do more tests we could expand this to get them to explain the differences. This also may be a point for documentation.

    User test one:

    https://make.wordpress.org/test/files/2016/02/UserTesting-1747859A.mp4

    Notes:

    • 0:53: When asked to go to add a logo she goes to HeaderHeader The header of your site is typically the first thing people will experience. The masthead or header art located across the top of your page is part of the look and feel of your website. It can influence a visitor’s opinion about your content and you/ your organization’s brand. It may also look different on different screen sizes..
    • 1:10: Despite going into the CustomizerCustomizer Tool built into WordPress core that hooks into most modern themes. You can use it to preview and modify many of your site’s appearance settings. she goes back out thinking was in wrong place.
    • 2:48: Goes to site icon rather than logo first when asked to do logo.
    • 3:12: Realises did site icon and thinks they did it automatically. Self corrects.

    Questions:

    1. How discoverable was the ability to add a site logo or site icon?
as you saw I was looking in the wrong place but really I think it does make sense to be in appearance. A tool tip on whats included in those submenus might be helpful.
    2. Do you know the difference between a site icon and site logo?
      yes
    3. Would you use the site logo feature?
      yes!
    4. Would you use the site icon feature?
      yes!

    User test two:

    https://cldup.com/kHWPkbaGKp.mp4

    Notes:

    • 1:17: Appearance found but tells self no.
    • 2:03: They go into Customize and think it’s not the right place.
    • 4:03: They begin to go through all links to try and find logo.
    • 4:49: Again they go into Customize and come out.
    • 7:33: They move on and find the help instructions.
    • 8:02: They say they needed those instructions as wouldn’t have found it otherwise.
    • 8:34: They managed to do it really easily and are pleased when this happens.
    • 9:12: Site icon forces cropping and this trips up on first attempt.

    Questions:

    1. How discoverable was the ability to add a site logo or site icon?
It was very difficult to find where to add the site logo, but once I was directed there, it was easy to find where to add the site icon.
    2. Do you know the difference between a site icon and site logo?
      no
    3. Would you use the site logo feature?
I would use the logo feature.
    4. Would you use the site icon feature?
I would not use the site icon feature until I understand what it is for.

Customize: Site logo and icon, 33755.5.diff, iPhone 6+

Testing 33755.5.diff for #33755 on an iPhone 6+.

      Notes:

      • Logo moved up to the top, putting title and tagline between site logo and site icon. I like the separation.
      • CustomizerCustomizer Tool built into WordPress core that hooks into most modern themes. You can use it to preview and modify many of your site’s appearance settings. preview was blank on the fresh VVV install I tested against.
      • Site icon hung while cropping once and completed with no feedback three other times.
      • I had to go to the desktop to see if the site icon was created or not. It was.
Site logo on an iPhone 6+.
      Scroll down for site icon.
Preview is blank on this fresh VVV install with twentyfifteen active.

This site icon cropping attempt hung indefinitely.
After cropping the site icon, the customizer does not show the new icon. The icon doesn’t seem to be set.
A visit to the desktop shows that the icon was actually set.

      Update:

A version of Twenty Sixteen modified for logo support is available here:

      https://github.com/wordpress/twentysixteen/tree/site-logo

Hit the Download Zip button and then unzip into a wp-content/themes directory and activate Twenty Sixteen/twentysixteen-site-logo.

With twentysixteen-site-logo, any logo that is set will show on the front page.

      Update:

      With 33755.12.diff:

      Notes:

      • Site icon flowFlow Flow is the path of screens and interactions taken to accomplish a task. It’s an experience vector. Flow is also a feeling. It’s being unselfconscious and in the zone. Flow is what happens when difficulties are removed and you are freed to pursue an activity without forming intentions. You just do it.
Flow is the actual user experience, in many ways. If you like, you can think of flow as a really comprehensive set of user stories. When you think about user flow, you’re thinking about exactly how a user will perform the tasks allowed by your product.Flow and Context
is better. It didn’t hang or complete without feedback as in the previous session.

      Update:

Here are shots of .12.diff on Nexus 5 and iPhone 5.

        Notes:

        • I had to remove a console.log() to avoid a console error.
        • I added add_theme_support( ‘site-logo’ ) to the twentyfifteen functions.php to get the customizerCustomizer Tool built into WordPress core that hooks into most modern themes. You can use it to preview and modify many of your site’s appearance settings. logo ui to display.
        • I didn’t try adding the_site_logo() to the theme.
        • Logo isn’t above the site title and tagline as discussed in the ticket
