Testing Menus in the Customizer

Observations

Note: this feature is still in development so there are some known issues (which I’m sure I’ve hit here).

  • Blocker: tapping “+ Add Link” in a new menu resulted in a phantom UIUI UI is an acronym for User Interface - the layout of the page the user interacts with. Think ‘how are they doing that’ and less about what they are doing. (looks like it doesn’t move over into view like it should?).
  • The “+ Add a Menu” button is hard to spot on mobile if you have several menus saved already.
  • The “+ Add a Menu” button is sits really close to the bottom menu bar in Safari on iOS. Some space below it could help make it a bigger tap target.
  • After tapping the “Reorder” link, I was surprised I could still tap and hold to drag menu items.
  • Scrolling is really hard on iOS, especially with the menu items being so wide on a small device screen.

Same as the previous flowFlow Flow is the path of screens and interactions taken to accomplish a task. It’s an experience vector. Flow is also a feeling. It’s being unselfconscious and in the zone. Flow is what happens when difficulties are removed and you are freed to pursue an activity without forming intentions. You just do it.

Flow is the actual user experience, in many ways. If you like, you can think of flow as a really comprehensive set of user stories. When you think about user flow, you’re thinking about exactly how a user will perform the tasks allowed by your product.Flow and Context

The media modal, attachment details modal, and link modal all have scrolling problems on mobile/touch devices. The page beneath them scrolls, resulting in stacked scrolling and a bad experience.

First, submenus tend to become detached when scrolling.

Second, toolbar menus are difficult to dismiss. In the screenshot below, I want to be able to tap the dash icon again to close the menu. Instead it takes me to the dash. Tapping outside the menu works to dismiss, but there’s no safe place to tap. If I tap anywhere near the image I go to the image url. Big menus make the problem worse.

To dismiss that menu without inadvertently following a link, you must tap + and then tap below that menu while avoiding images and links in the content below.
