Welcome to the home of the WordPress Sustainability Team!

We seek to embed sustainable practices into WordPress to ensure the longevity of the project.

To do so, we focus our efforts on the 3 pillars of sustainability:

Social: Finding ways to increase the diversity and wellbeing of the WordPress community.

Environmental: Reducing energy and waste consumption in the development and usage of the WordPress software and its community activities.

Economical: Finding ways to economically support contributions to the WordPress Project, for those who need it.

Agenda

We will continue the projects we are currently working on as a priority:

WordPress Sustainability PluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party supported by the WP Sustainability Team. WordCamp Handbook with sustainability ideas/guidelines. Learn how to contribute to this here and follow up on this project here.
- We can consider the proposal of having a section for organizers and another one for attendees approved. We should structure the content taking this into account.
- In the last week, has been suggested to prioritize the Handbook as we have a link in the Welcome Box.

There are other issues that may require our attention right now:

Sustainability Team self-approval system. This meeting marks two weeks since the publication of the proposal. We will review if there are any counterproposals or suggestions and, if none, we will consider the system approved.
Sustainability Team Badges. The guidelines proposal for this have been published, and the final decision will be made at the March 1st meeting. You can share your thoughts on Slack or directly in the post.
Sustainability Team video presentation. Team Reps are going to record a short video to present the team. You can share here your suggestions or thoughts about the content of the video.

If you have any updates on issues or projects that we have previously discussed, you are free to bring them up during the meeting.

I see that WordPress joined with Drupal, Joomla and TPYO3 to form the Open Website Alliance, focusing on things like the EU’s Digital Markets Act.

Another OWA – Open Web Advocacy – has been working on similar topics for quite a while, and are currently focused on Apple deciding to kill Web Apps in iOSiOS The operating system used on iPhones and iPads.’s Safari 17.4 in a couple of weeks. They’re looking for as many testimonials and support as they can get, so as to be able to better inform the DMA team on how to respond.

So, it seems that both WP’s OWA should put its weight behind OWAdvocacy’s effort to protect an open, capable web – if this battle gets lost, it seems that development will increasingly move away from the web towards native apps.

Is this something that could get brought up in the meeting and/or forwarded along to the leaders of the various CMSs?

  Hi Nick,
  
  This topic has been on the agenda of the last two meetings (you can check it here and here). The only thing we (the Sustainability Team) can do for now is to pass the information and concerns to the Project Leaders, as they are the ones who manage the WordPress representation in the alliance. And this is something we have already done since the subject has already been raised by a contributor.
  
  If you have a concrete proposal about this topic, you can bring it up at today’s meeting.
