Welcome to the home of the WordPress Sustainability Team!

We seek to embed sustainable practices into WordPress to ensure the longevity of the project.

To do so, we focus our efforts on the 3 pillars of sustainability:

Social: Finding ways to increase the diversity and wellbeing of the WordPress community.

Environmental: Reducing energy and waste consumption in the development and usage of the WordPress software and its community activities.

Economical: Finding ways to economically support contributions to the WordPress Project, for those who need it.

Brainstorming and discusing about:

Proposing to WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. Europe 2024 organizers a train travel information section in the web (by @ramon-fincken).
Discussing about the relationship between Sustainability Team and DEIB proposal. You can check some thoughts about this here.
Discussing about participating in Open SourceOpen Source Open Source denotes software for which the original source code is made freely available and may be redistributed and modified. Open Source **must be** delivered via a licensing model, see GPL. initiatives like this one.

Shan’t be able to join the conversation in real time today, but would like to contribute the following thoughts:
1 – Are we suggesting that Susteam undertake to create a train travel information section for WCEU24? It is likely that highlighting train travel options from various major european centres to Turin will help nudge attendees to consider this option. We could go so far as highlight specific routes and train times and suggest attendees might like to travel in company. Across europe a site like “The Man in Seat 61” is a terrific resource, and it even has a Turin stations page

I would like to consider also the following alternative approaches:
– Create a general Environmental Travel Guide for WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. organisers as a whole to point their attendees to. A generic guide may be of limited utility at first, but could be reused or pointed to by a LOT of events, and would be a good way to have a visible output from the Susteam that we can keep updated.
– Create a general Environmental Travel Guidance Template for WC orgs to use as a basis for a WC specific travel page. Less visible, but would possibly have higher impact on specific events.

For those whom only really have the practical option to fly we can point out tools like the google flight carbon calculator.

I did find a map before Porto that allowed different travel options from points across europe to be compared for their carbon footprint… can I find it now? No, infuriatingly! IF we _can_ find such a resource, maybe even commision one for the big regional WordCamps, that might be a very cool too. Perhaps it could be a project suggestion to float to potential sponsors of WCEU?
