WordPress 6.4-RC1

The first Release Candidate for WordPress 6.4 is now available for testing!

New support guidelines are live

As mentioned last week, the new support guidelines are now live, how has the first week been so far?

Checking in with international liaisons

This is the section where we reach out to the non-English speaking parts of our community, to see how they are doing, if there’s anything we can help each other with, or just interesting things going on that it would be nice to share with others.

There’s no requirements for previous participation or “fame” to share here, anyone is welcome, and we encourage newcomers to participate!

Unable to make the meeting, or maybe meetings just aren’t your thing? We would still love to hear how things are going in other non-English speaking parts of our community. Please feel free to let us know via the comment section below, in your own time, if there is anything you’d like to share, any questions or concerns you have, or just to let us know you’re doing OK!

We will make a habit of putting this callout with every agenda post going forward, so that everyone has a chance to join in.

For any other items to discuss, please add them to the comments below, or bring them up in the meeting.

New support guidelines

After an amazing period of collaborative thinking, writing, and iterating, the support team is happy to announce the publication of the revamped support guidelines!

The new guidelines have been simplified, reducing the size and mental load of reading them for end users substantially, while also removing any outdated sections that are no longer relevant.

Most of these changes do not require much explanation, but there are some where some caveats apply, due to what I shall call the “guideline statute of limitations”.

In addition, the guidelines have previously been changed as needed, often more “behind the scenes” than what we would like, and the team will strive to do better, and ensure that any changes are communicated clearly moving forward.

Do not post about commercial products

The review process is here receiving a notable change, where previously any pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party or theme that is “upsold” (marketing is added in any way to sell products or services) on WordPress.orgWordPress.org The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https://wordpress.org/ could have reviews for what they feature also impact their reviews, this is no longer the case.

As the ecosystem has evolved, this guidelines has had to evolve with it, and where large plugins, or in some cases marketplace plugins, exist and promote both their own, but also third party solutions that solve user problems, it is not fair to judge them on a third party they do not control.

This means that any review needs to be about the code that is published on WordPress.org, the immediate purchasing experience (this means buying it, downloading it, refunding it) is what may be reviewed. The notable exception is Software as a Service (SaaS) solutions, or equivalent. Given the nature of these, where the code and experience lies within an external provider, it is natural for these to be symbiotic with their plugin or theme counterpart, and as such are seen as a whole.

Please note that this is a substantial change in procedure for the moderators as well, and only applies to new reviews created after October 16th 2023. The reason for this being that it is unreasonable to moderate hundreds of thousands of existing reviews, which were at the time in alignment with the guidelines.

Do not create multiple accounts

Although the support team does not allow individuals to create multiple accounts, this is not new, we do allow companies to register a brand account, so long as it comes with a verifiable company email address.

Although it is preferred that everyone use their personal account when and if possible, as users generally respond better to what isn’t considered a “faceless corporation”, the team also acknowledges that there is safety in anonymity when supporting users; as made obvious by the amount of tools recently introduced to ensure moderators on WordPress.org can interact and carry out tasks with anonymity in mind as well.

This means that as an individual, you may only have a single account that is yours, but you may also have a branded account with your employer for these use cases.

Get familiar with the changes

That’s the two main notable points, what’s next? Getting familiar with the changes of course, which you can do by reading the guidelines.

New support guidelines

The process for the updated support guidelines is finished, and feedback has been incorporated where applicable.

As there were no major concerns with the timing proposed in the agenda, and given the long feedback period given, the plan remains to publish them fully on the upcoming Monday, October 16th. The publication will be accompanied by a post here on make/support to help signal boost the update, and add some specific clarification that is relevant to theme and pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. APAC friendly meeting times

There’s been some talk of a desire for more Asia-Pacific (APAC) friendly support meeting times. This is something the team has wanted to do, and although previous attempts lacked volunteers in the area with the time available to do so, we now have some volunteers, and are hoping to get that under way. More information will be posted about this once the involved volunteers have had a chance to plan it out!

Checking in with international liaisons

None of the teams international liaisons had any concerns or special events/news to share at this time.

New Support Guidelines

With the feedback period for the new support guidelines over, and the feedback having been incorporated into the text, it’s time to put them live. Let’s discuss the timing for this, as some of the changes will impact how some things are reviewed by the moderation team, but will only be applicable to new content (due to the excessive amount of overhead involved in going through old content).

The proposed time for the new guidelines to go live is be Monday October 16th.

Analytics dashboards: Revisited

We’ve already had some talks about this, but a revival of the discussion around analytic dashboards is here, and a request for input on what information would be beneficial has been put out.

Let’s discuss what information the support team would view as valuable and try to provide a collective response to simplify the task of looking through all that comes up!

Let’s look at what is now available, and also the potential to require all moderators or above to use this feature.

Feedback on the proposed changes to the support guidelines

The window to provide feedback on the new Support Guidelines is rapidly approaching its end, so remember to provide feedback if you have any before October 1st!

New workflow for moderators when working with reported topics

The process surrounding reported topics have started getting enhanced, with a new way to track who helps the community out by reporting things (privately, of course), a means of looking into your past reports, and getting direct responses tied to your reports.

This allows moderators to provide anonymous feedback to the user on their report, and also ensures taht those who create a report know that they have been both viewed, and resolved in some manner.

Proposal for updated support guidelines

The support guidelines serve as the guidestones for support moderators (and pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. San Francisco in 2013, and a lot has happened in those 10 years. Some guidelines were added ad-hoc to account for timely situations, while others have just become dated, and may not necessarily reflect the current state of the WordPress user base, it’s surrounding ecosystem, or the outward facing opinion we wish to nurture.

The following is a collaborative effort in refining, simplifying, and clarifying the guidelines as they are today, into something that is both easier to understand for users, but also makes the job of those moderating much easier in the long term.

The proposal is available in a separate document, to make it easier to reading in an isolated (and easily comparable to the current iteration) manner.

Note that some changes would initially impact existing forum content. As these are new guidelines; once implemented, they will only relate to new content moving forward. The reasoning being that existing content were a product of the guidelines of their time, and moderating this existing content every time a guideline changes is just not something that can be done..
