Based on previous discussion, we are trialling an APAC-friendly meeting time to see if that is a valuable option. For now, this will be in addition to the existing meeting time – but depending on demand we can consider alternating the times each week.

Slack > Matrix Switchover

Checking in on the proposed switch from Slack to Matrix:

What are the things that could be challenging if we make the #forums channel on Slack read-only starting today?
What pain point or blockers have you noticed using Matrix and different clients?

Support Team Onboarding

With the new Support Guidelines approved and in place – it might be time to consider documenting some kind of onboarding for potential new members to the team. What do you think? What should be included?

Checking in with international liaisons

This is the section where we reach out to the non-English speaking parts of our community, to see how they are doing, if there’s anything we can help each other with, or just interesting things going on that it would be nice to share with others.

There’s no requirements for previous participation or “fame” to share here, anyone is welcome, and we encourage newcomers to participate!

Unable to make the meeting, or maybe meetings just aren’t your thing? We would still love to hear how things are going in other non-English speaking parts of our community. Please feel free to let us know via the comment section below, in your own time, if there is anything you’d like to share, any questions or concerns you have, or just to let us know you’re doing OK!

We will make a habit of putting this callout with every agenda post going forward, so that everyone has a chance to join in.

Re matrix, please see my comment/problem report on #matrixhelp: “In slackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/., one could @-pingPing The act of sending a very small amount of data to an end point. Ping is used in computer science to illicit a response from a target server to test it’s connection. Ping is also a term used by Slack users to @ someone or send them a direct message (DM). Users might say something along the lines of “Ping me when the meeting starts.” a user and select from a drop down list. If they’re not in the current channel, slack with either add or invite them. On Matrix, if the user is not in the current room, then they do not show on the list and, it appears, one cannot message them in a channel. How can I directly contact a user in an on-channel conversation in Matrix if that user is not already in the channel (but does have a Slack userid).”

Second, I’m not sure if it’s an Elements problem or Matrix, but the metaMeta Meta is a term that refers to the inside workings of a group. For us, this is the team that works on internal WordPress sites like WordCamp Central and Make WordPress. channel always indicates unread messages, even after I use the “mark all read” option for that channel.

That’s an exciting decision for the International WordPressians. I hope with this, the collaboration among all the wordpress members from around the world will get increased!

Meeting Notes

APAC Meeting Time
We’ll chalk this one up as an experiment to re-visit – but this week there was not any interest or attendance at the APAC meeting time. We’ll rethink our approach and try it again in the future.

Matrix Feedback
Note that as of Dec 11 (at SOTW) the migrationMigration Moving the code, database and media files for a website site from one server to another. Most typically done when changing hosting companies. to Matrix has been paused – details to follow. Regardless, the feedback gathered is useful

We discussed a range of feedback related to the SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/./Matrix migration and bugs/shortcomings of using Matrix
- Discussion of how different clients handle threads (fluffychat and neo inline them, Element and Nheko kind of support them).
- There was some confusion about the best place to report feedback (as there are a few options). We confirmed that the Github repo is the source of truth for Matrix issues – but if we report in Slack or Make blogs, they should get bubbled up to GH as well.
- There is a need for better documentation and guides on matrix clients. Specifically, welcome messages, auto-recommendations and bookmarks were mentioned.
- Performance issues (lag, throttle) were raised.
- There was an overall acknowledgement that part of the challenge is that it is the ‘wild west’ when it comes to matrix clients – implementing features in different ways, and as they see fit.
- Pings don’t seem to work on matrix (noted when pinging international forum mods).

- We discussed the pinging of specific representatives and why that happens – essentially resolved to keep doing it for now.
Onboarding Docs
A proposal for introducing a form of onboarding documentation had been raised and was discussed briefly:

Suggestions of what should be included:
- Security best practices
- handling of information
- De-escalation techniques
- Expectations as outward facing, but priveliged, users on the project
It was suggested that this be relatively brief, in order to help aid translation, and emphasise clarity.
