Weekly Meetings

As well as discussing support issues here on the blog, we use Slack for group communication.

Proposals for next agenda * Social Support Twitter…

Proposals for next agenda:

Social Support: Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Should we take this on? How do we take this on? Taking these on individually with the understanding that we can’t answer everyone (like we do with the forums) seems like the way to go.

Hi James! My name is Terry. I’m not an “official” anything, merely a volunteer forum support type of person. Recent, at that, but having a blast. So if I am out of line, I will happily recede back into the shadows and be a content observer.

I will throw in a couple of comments about LinkedIn. In my experience, I would think there should be limited concern about wp.org answering every question. There is almost always a plethora of responses, and you usually even get a few good answers sprinkled in amongst the self-promoters. Which is to be naturally expected, as LinkedIn is a very popular place for developers to strut their stuff.

  We have an official WordPress group on LinkedIn which is forums, job postings, and promotions.

  It’s a bit of a bigger beast than our official WordPress profiles on Twitter and Facebook.

  They all offer lines of communication, draw a fair share of questions, but LinkedIn seems like a bigger beast all together.
  
  The LinkedIn group currently has an Owner (Matt, *the* Matt), a Manager (Rebecca Collins, Automattic), and a great team of Moderators.
  
  I suppose the questions really are, do we want to make a support presence and help out the already established folks? If so, do we want to participate in all three (Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn), and how do we reach out to those already established folks to bring them over to the Make/Support fold?

The LinkedIN presence is pretty much covered I believe, so I don’t think we need to worry too much about this one.

I’m guessing you are thinking of the mention we got regarding there actually being an official twitter/facebook that often gets support requests that nobody really answers?

Honestly … I vote against Twitter/FB as official support. We have the forums, we have IRC. Twitter is too impossible to try and ‘control’ and as my company knows, it’s freakin’ nuts to explain to people “No, this is a longer than 140 character question/answer.” Also those places would require someone to man the wporg twitter account, which isn’t ours and it’s not meant for support.

  I vote against Twitter/FB as official support too.
  
  Twitter is good (great even) for short conversations but for troubleshooting it would be just “I’m sorry you have problems please post to the support forums & I’m sure someone will pop in & help you out as I struggle to say this in 140”-
  
  You get the idea. 😉
  
  And FB is… to FB. I use it for friends and family but the FaceBook’iness of the whole experience would IMHO distract from WordPress and providing support. Same with Google+.
  
  (Though I do think we should reply in haiku but that’s just my quirk.)

    I vote against Twitter/Facebook support also. If people have internet to access those, then they can easily go over to the support forums here, make an account, and ask a question.

      Sounds like we’ve reached consensus pre-meetupMeetup All local/regional gatherings that are officially a part of the WordPress world but are not WordCamps are organized through https://www.meetup.com/. A meetup is typically a chance for local WordPress users to get together and share new ideas and seek help from one another. Searching for ‘WordPress’ on meetup.com will help you find options in your area.. 😉
      
      Perhaps the Abouts at https://twitter.com/wordpress and https://www.facebook.com/WordPress could at least be updated with a link to https://wordpress.org/support/ ?
