Support Team Update for May 1st

Items discussed in this week’s #wordpress-sfd chat.

3.9.1 soon

Andrew Nacin confirmed WordPress 3.9.1 should be out soon and there may be a release candidateRelease Candidate A beta version of software with the potential to be a final product, which is ready to release unless significant bugs emerge.. With a minor point releaseMinor Release A set of releases or versions having the same minor version number may be collectively referred to as .x , for example version 5.2.x to refer to versions 5.2, 5.2.1, 5.2.3, and all other versions in the 5.2 (five dot two) branch of that software. Minor Releases often make improvements to existing features and functionality. patch, Advanced Image Styles and TinyMCE Color Picker plugins that may alleviate the TinyMCE issues some users have had with 3.9.

As expected the amount of new forum topics for the Visual Editor has gone down since the release of 3.9. That’s not to minimize user’s problems but that is one way to gauge the user’s experience.

IRC this week and forum oddities

While discussing the #wordpress IRC channel it as mentioned that there is an increase in some users seeking paid support. In the forums when that happens a stock reply is posted and the topic is closed. In IRC there is a doc-bot reply that is used.

It’s not a problem users seeking paid support and there were some comments that indicates WordPress is doing fine. 😉

I did bring up an odd forum thing: dedicate pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party support topics get a slug aside from the regular tag. On one occasion a topic like that ended up in Your WordPress. Forum members can’t do that with plugin support topics though it could have been moved there by a moderator (that’s easy to do). If it happens again I’ll pingPing The act of sending a very small amount of data to an end point. Ping is used in computer science to illicit a response from a target server to test it’s connection. Ping is also a term used by Slack users to @ someone or send them a direct message (DM). Users might say something along the lines of “Ping me when the meeting starts.” Otto.

Version 1.0 of the Code Reference

Congratulation to the Docs team! Last week the Docs team announced the release of version 1 of the code reference. This is a very cool tool and in a few minutes I located things that I’d like to play with (current_action() leapt out at me).

Head over and take a look, I’m sure you’ll find it useful and informative.

The Alpha/BetaBeta A pre-release of software that is given out to a large group of users to trial under real conditions. Beta versions have gone through alpha testing in-house and are generally fairly close in look, feel and function to the final product; however, design changes often occur as part of the process. sub-forum

Reminder to forum moderators: If people post in https://wordpress.org/support/forum/alphabeta and it’s NOT alpha/beta, move the post to the correct sub-forum (usually that’s How To and Troubleshooting). If forum members reply to old resolved ones, it’s okay to delete and close that topic. That forum can be difficult to maintain and doing that is alright.
