Sept 27 Meetup Recap

The Support-Chat has been busted two weeks running. Last week was me in a car accident, this week stuck in traffic (schools let out at 2:45, who knew?) and I forgot what timezone I was in… But anyway!

Right now we’ve got a lot of them linking back to wordpress.comWordPress.com An online implementation of WordPress code that lets you immediately access a new WordPress environment to publish your content. WordPress.com is a private company owned by Automattic that hosts the largest multisite in the world. This is arguably the best place to start blogging if you have never touched WordPress before. https://wordpress.com/ – This is okay for now. When we’re done, we’ll come back and make our own. I’m not inclined to leave the links to .com (or use the codex ones) since they can be changed without our notice.

3.4.2 or 3.5?

Either one. 3.5 is so close, if you’re working on a page that got a facelift/massive change in 3.5 (media, themes/appearance), then use 3.5. Otherwise the majority of the change is in the hip to be square buttons, and we’re okay with that.

Pages in need of love

If you want a page that isn’t created, just say “I want this page” and an admin will make it for you and tag you as the author. Keep in mind, we have a lot of similar pages, so it may help to say “I want Overview, built off https://make.wordpress.org/support/user-manual/05-just-write-in-wordpress ” in order not to confuse anyone 😉

Some of these pages are assigned to people.

Just Write in WordPress

  • Overview
  • Pages
  • Media

Media we should do off of 3.5. Under that page will be three (or more) subpages – embedding media (videos etc), changing locations of media files, and adding media to posts/pages. We’ll link back to adding media to posts/pages from the posts and pages screen.

Pages is going to be hard. We are not going to touch on Custom Post-Types. We’re not there yet. Maybe in advanced. That still leaves us with:

  • Edit Pages Screen
  • New Page Screen
  • Page Attributes
  • Page Jumps
  • Page RevisionsRevisions The WordPress revisions system stores a record of each saved draft or published update. The revision system allows you to see what changes were made in each revision by dragging a slider (or using the Next/Previous buttons). The display indicates what has changed in each revision.
  • Page Screen
  • Page Visibility
  • Schedule a Page

So here’s the thoughts. Pull anything that impacts both pages and posts out. Like Page Jumps can really be re-worded to be generic and fit both posts and pages. Ditto Page Revisions and Scheduling. We should just have those in the ‘Writing’ level. Less work 😉

Customizing WordPress

  • Themes
  • Widgets
  • Plugins – Siobhan
  • Menus – (@JerrySarcastic)
  • Adding Users – (@JerrySarcastic)

For these, keep it simple. Widgets – only the ones that come with coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. (and a note “Themes and plugins may add …”).

My WordPress Brings All The Boys To The Yard

This just really needs a better title! Current suggestions:

  • Discussion & Community
  • WordPress Discussion Settings
  • Welcoming Users to your WordPress Site

Voting welcome!

Moving Sept 20th Weekly Chat!

After talking to Esmi and Andrea, we’re going to test something this week (aka tomorrow).

The chat will be at UTC 2100 – That is three hours later.

  • 10pm London
  • 6pm Andrea Time
  • 5pm US Eastern
  • 2pm US Pacific
  • 2:30am (Friday) Bangalore

If this works out, we may move it permanently.

Apologies for my brevity this week, Jewish New Year + getting on a plane in 5 hours. If you have some time, please hit up anything on https://make.wordpress.org/support/user-manual/ that isn’t checked off (or has someone’s name). If it has your name, you know what to do 😉

Trac tickets with User Manual implications

Hi, my name is Jerry Bates, and I’m new to these parts, but have been building sites for others (and training them too) for some time now.  I’m looking forward to working on this manual, as I think it’s sorely needed.

Anyway, before I start rolling up my sleeves, I thought I’d post up a few of the TracTrac Trac is the place where contributors create issues for bugs or feature requests much like GitHub.https://core.trac.wordpress.org/. ticket I am aware of that have implications for this project, and will likely require either re-writing existing (from .com) documentation or updated screenshots; in some cases both.

I know many of you are already aware of these tickets, but I don’t see discussions about it, so I figured this would be good to post up, to avoid any duplication of effort.

Chat Summary – Sept 6

Okay our first to do list for everyone!

If you go to the User Manual you’ll see a list of pages, but below that is a section with checkboxes, and here’s how we’re going to handle this.

We’re going to be making sub-pages like https://make.wordpress.org/support/user-manual/about-wordpress/com-vs-org/ – When we’re ready to work on a master topic (about wordpress), we’ll stub out the page for people to get started.

  1. Pick a page you want to do
  2. If the page exists under https://make.wordpress.org/support/user-handbook/ see if it’s good to go. If so, just move it over.
  3. If there’s no page (like there’s no ‘how to FTPFTP FTP is an acronym for File Transfer Protocol which is a way of moving computer files from one computer to another via the Internet. You can use software, known as a FTP client, to upload files to a server for a WordPress website. https://codex.wordpress.org/FTP_Clients.’ page) create it under user-manual/topic/
  4. Edit the page.
  5. Check the box on the manual page to say you did it
  6. Have a beer

The draft handbook is the one at https://make.wordpress.org/support/user-handbook/ and was what we copied over from .com. The reason we’re going to move/delete the pages is so that if we have leftovers when we’re done, we can review them and see if they’re useful.

Now some of you will say “I can’t make a page!” Okay, that’s true. Do you want to be able to make pages? Just ask. I made a Request Editor Access page so anyone can post there and I’ll follow up with you.

As a heads up, next week we’ll be having an extra hour, because we want to dedicate it to the WordPress settings. So on the 13th, we’ll go through each topic under that, edit, and finalize those pages 🙂 People will be available in IRC for help and such, and if you want to get your feet wet with water wings, I suggest you come on by IRC next week for that!
