Wanted to give everyone a heads up on where we\u2019re at with moving away from Meetup.com. It\u2019s something the community has talked about for years, and it comes at a cost of about $250,000 a year to the WordPress Community SupportWordPress Community Support<\/span> A public benefit corporation and a subsidiary of the WordPress Foundation, established<\/a> in 2016.<\/span><\/span><\/span> (WPCSWordPress Community Support<\/span> A public benefit corporation and a subsidiary of the WordPress Foundation, established<\/a> in 2016.<\/span><\/span><\/span>), for a platform that doesn\u2019t fully serve our needs.<\/p>\n

Some of you may be aware, but for those that aren\u2019t: we\u2019re building around GatherPress, the open-source, community-built event plugin<\/a>. It\u2019s made by the WordPress community for the WordPress community. The plan is to use GatherPress as the foundation and build the WordPress.orgWordPress.org<\/span> The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https:\/\/wordpress.org\/<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span> pieces on top, contributing improvements back to the GatherPress pluginPlugin<\/span> A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/<\/a> or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party.<\/span><\/span><\/span> where possible and giving direct feedback otherwise. <\/p>\n

@<\/span>annezazu<\/a> is wrangling people to carry this project forward, with early work from @<\/span>dd32<\/a>, alongside @<\/span>patricia70<\/a>, @<\/span>mauteri<\/a>, and the @<\/span>GatherPress<\/a> contributor community. This is the direction, not a finished plan yet, and we\u2019ll share specifics as scope and timeline firm up.<\/p>\n
