Hi WP Polyglots I would like to organize…

Hi WP Polyglots!
I would like to organize a team that would translate WordPress in Romani (Romanes) the language of the Roma (sometimes referred as “Gypsy”) people. Roma people does not have a country, they are about 15.000.000 people leaving all around Europe from Scandinavia to Italy, from Turkey to Ireland, from Portugal to Russia – as the largest European minority. But they do have a language.

Roma people are the most discriminated and excluded people in Europe, and many European institutions and international bodies are trying to support Roma education, inclusion and better information.
I was (unpleasantly) surprised when I realized that there is no WordPress in Romani language.

I am a WP user and human rights activist and educator, working in an international NGO, mostly with education about the discrimination and intolerance. In our work we focus on two things: we try to educate vulnerable groups to use the new-media tools in fight for their (human) rights, and we are debunking the stereotypes, bias and prejudice against the Roma people presented in the mainstream and other (online) media.

Providing Roma people with a tool to share information in their own language (and to create multilingual websites combining their own and the local majority language) would really be an important step and a great contribution to the struggle for inclusion and equal rights for the Roma communities around Europe.

I would like to create an international group that would work on the WP translation in Romani. But before I do that, I want to consult this community about it…

I checked the ISO 639-3 code, it is “rom”. (http://www.ethnologue.com/language/rom)
There is no “country”, so I guess we leave it empty?

There are a couple of standardisations of the Romani language, or better said, there is no single standardization of the language – jet. It is one of the challenges. But it is really very important to provide the Roma communities with the tools of communication and participation, that any version is better than non at all. I intend to involve several academics from different parts of Europe in order to find the best ways and a “common ground” in solving this issue for this particular project of translating the WP into Romani.

Basically, I just want to check with you WP Polyglots guys before I invite the experts and other helpers and organize a “Romani translation team”. So – can we do this?

Revisiting Serbian Latin

Hi Polyglots!

I’d like to reopen discussion on adding a discrete Serbian Latin localeLocale Locale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. A list of all locales supported by WordPress in https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/. We seem to have last addressed it in 2012. I think it’s worth considering adding here circa 2017 for a few reasons:

1. We now are in a very async world (eg, JS callouts) and the transformative plugins that tend to be suggested do not handle asynchronous pieces well. We see the problem with Jetpack Comments (as noted by eboye previously) but the same issue presumably extends to any theme or pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party making async calls.

2. Conceptually, IMHO, having a discrete entry designated is the “right thing to do” programmatically. It helps dependencies (plugin, theme, etc, as noted in 1) be accurate which concretely ends up meaning less bugs.

3. Official GP variant support is coming so we might as well be prepared.

4. `de-formal` established a discrete variant precedent.

5. A Serbian Latin GP project should require no additional validation resources as we could simply cron job transliteration of Cyrillic to the Latin project every few hours.

Thoughts?

Rename request for Uighur Locale

Dear Support,

The old English translation of our ethnic people name “Uighur” not using any more. The name “Uyghur” is more accurate and closer native language pronunciation. From earlier this year it widely used by International media:

APStyleBook: We are now using the spelling Uyghur for a Turkic ethnic group native

BBC News style guide: Uyghur: The mostly Muslim ethnic group, living in north-western China in the region of Xinjiang.

So, could you please rename our locale name from “Uighur” to “Uyghur”, also the short name Ug_Cn, please rename it to uy_UY.

Thank you!

Locale request for Székely-Hungarian Rovás

We would like to start a translation / transcription project.
There are two living scripts for Hungarian language, the latin based and the runic like Szekely-Hungarian rovas (known and registered as Old Hungarian), an RTL script.
All requested transcription would be done directly from the latin based Hungarian text, so it is not a real translation, the texts are already verified and used in latin based Hungarian. There will be around 2-5 persons in our transcription group, and we wait others to join if they are interested.
