## 🎂 WordPress Has Turned 20 Years Old

May 27, 2023, marked the 20th anniversary of WordPress’ first release. WordPress
enthusiasts from all over the world gathered at more than **130 events** to celebrate
this important milestone. Check out [this inspirational notes by Joshepa](https://wordpress.org/news/2023/05/celebrating-20-years-of-wordpress/)
on the meaning that lies within these remarkable 20 years.

## 💪 The Power of Translation

The Polyglots team plays a crucial role in enhancing the worldwide influence of
WordPress through their dedicated translation efforts, ensuring its accessibilityAccessibility
Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices,
services, or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible
design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning
compatibility with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen
readers). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accessibility) to users across the globe.

[Check this post](https://europe.wordcamp.org/2023/the-power-of-translation-how-the-polyglots-team-shapes-wordpress/)
made by the WCEU 2023 organizing team for a deeper understanding of how WordPress
translators – like you – contribute significantly to the WordPress ecosystem.

## ⚡️ Translate Live

“Translate Live” is now the new name for “Playground” of translate.wordpress.orgtranslate.
wordpress.org The platform for contributing to the translation of WordPress core,
themes and plugins.. The original name of Playground comes from the fact that it
uses WordPress Playground. As it might sound not so easy to understand, thus we
renamed the link on the translation page to “Translate Live”.

Apart from this brand new name, some new features have been implemented in the tool,
like glossaries integration, placeholders check, ChatGPT integration, etc.

Head over to [the announcement post](https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/2023/05/08/translate-live-updates-to-the-translation-playground/)
for more details.

### Virtual projects for patterns

To streamline the patterns translation process, each pattern now has its own project,
so you can focus more on translating patterns one by one.

Currently, this feature has some limitations:

### Syncing translations between Dev and Stable

On [translate.wordpress.org](https://translate.wordpress.org/), when a translation
was approved in the Development part of a project, it was automatically synced to
the Stable part. However, this didn’t work when a translation was rejected. With
this recent update, rejecting a translation in the Stable part of the project [will automatically reject the same string in the Development part of the project](https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/2023/02/20/sync-translations-between-dev-and-stable-projects/).

### Changes requested column and status updates

[⌊A screenshot of the WordPress 6.2 project in translate.wordpress.org showing the
Changes requested column.⌉⌊A screenshot of the WordPress 6.2 project in translate.

The table view within projects has been improved. An extra column has been added
on the right side of the table called **Changes requested** and shows the number
of strings for which changes have been requested.

Additionally, a new fix has been applied to strings in the **Changes requested**
status. As soon as the suggested translation is adjusted and approved, the original
suggestion is automatically marked as old. This means it is no longer necessary
to reject a string after the suggestion has been fixed.

**Did you know…?**

By default, [translate.wordpress.org](https://translate.wordpress.org) shows 20
strings per page. Did you know that in the [profile settings](https://translate.wordpress.org/settings/),
this number can be adjusted to a much higher value? This can be particularly useful
when reviewing a big project while working on a large screen with a good internet
connection. A couple of things to remember:

 * If you’re a team working on the same project, it’s good to change this value
back to 20. That way, URLs to paginated views will create fewer surprises.
 * If you have any browser add-ons that assist with forms and/or translations, these
may limit how high you can go.

Here’s an optimized workflow when reviewing a large contribution:

 1. Filter your view to pending strings from one contributor.
 2. Start with the last page, particularly if you want to avoid new strings popping
    into view in step 4.
 3. Scan for and act on strings that need to be corrected, rejected, or changes requested.
 4. Reload the page.
 5. Select “all rows” and perform a bulk accept. (If you’re working backward, you will
now land on an empty page and have to navigate to the new “last page.”)

Have you heard? Polyglots have been hard at work improving GlotPress’s functionality!
Recent improvements to [translate.wordpress.org](https://translate.wordpress.org)
include:

There is a new proposal to build on GlotPress functionality that would enable WordPress
users to use GlotPress on their own WordPress installations. This would allow users
to translate their whole system and share these translations as suggestions with
the community. If you’d like to read more about the idea and leave feedback, thoughts,

**Did you know…? **Have you ever wondered where locale codes come from? Polyglots
and translate.wordpress.org use the [ISO 639 naming convention](https://iso639-3.sil.org/code_tables/639/data).
Originally adopted in 1967, there are currently five parts of the ISO 639, all of
which define standard abbreviations for languages and language groups.

WordPress.orgWordPress.org The community site where WordPress code is created and
shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress
core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations
and organization. [https://wordpress.org/](https://wordpress.org/) applies these
standards in a number of ways for various languages. The definitive source of information
is the automatically generated list of [Translation Teams on the Make/Polyglots site](https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/).(
As a note: the WP-locale often differs from the locale slug used on [translate.wordpress.org](https://translate.wordpress.org/).)
