GlotDict 1.4 – The new hope

Just to stay in the Star Wars mood of the previous release, yes there is a new hope!

For the release of GlotDict 1.4 I chose a different approach. As you probably saw the 1.3 release got 25 different tickets only for bugfixing and a few little features.

This release saw more than 9 months for a new major because I didn’t receive many new ideas for features while at the same time I was contributing less to polyglots and working more on code.

Welcome to Garrett and JB to the GlotDict team!

I was initially feeling alone but with a lot of community members opening feature requests and reporting bugs or submitting pull requests I saw hope!

Today #GlotDict has 346 users from all around the world so I figured why not open the team up to people from all around the world with permissions on the GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the ‘pull request’ where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged be the repository owner. https://github.com/ repoWordPress Localization Repository The WordPress Localization Repository at https://i18n.svn.wordpress.org/ is a Subversion repository where official WordPress translations are maintained. See Working with the Translation Repository for details.?

I asked both @garrett-eclipse (from Canada) and @audrasjb (from France) if they were interested since they were the most active contributors and they agreed so in less than 15 days we got GlotDict 1.4!

Our changelog is very simple with a lot of new features made mainly by the new maintainers:

  • Feature: New Ctrl+Alt+D hotkey to dismiss warnings
  • Feature: New bulk action to Copy from original
  • Feature: New validatorValidator See translation editor. for non typographic quotes
  • Feature: Width of the view is 85%

  • Enhancement: Rewritten part of GlotDict actions to use GlotPress JS APIAPI An API or Application Programming Interface is a software intermediary that allows programs to interact with each other and share data in limited, clearly defined ways.

They improved the code quality and also implemented new features, like the StringString A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings. Counts:

We also implemented the ‘Copy from original’ as a bulk action:

And we have a new validator for non typographic quotes.
There is also a new wiki with only one page for now, that explains how to test the extension locally https://github.com/Mte90/GlotDict/wiki/Test-extension-locally.

The empire strikes back

Or basically what is the plan for 1.5-1.6-1.7 release of GlotDict?

We already opened a few tickets about new ideas to develop for the next releases and are looking for new feature requests.
Check Github for them -> https://github.com/Mte90/GlotDict/issues?q=is%3Aissue+is%3Aopen+sort%3Aupdated-desc

GlotDict 1.1.10

Another release of the your favourite extension for your browser!

First of all sorry for the many bugs detected in these days after the release of 1.1.5 (https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/2016/09/22/glotdict-1-1-5/) but with the implementation of the link of the Consistency tool and with specific glossaries can happen some problems.

So in 10 days I released 5 different release to fix the errors and I hope that this will be not happen anymore, but why?

  • The extension now validate the HTMLHTML HTML is an acronym for Hyper Text Markup Language. It is a markup language that is used in the development of web pages and websites. that generate, so in the future there will be not anymore strange code in the stringsString A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings.
  • Now I have a static file with specific strings for test and I have only to switch the languages to test it (before I have to do manually on different glotpressGlotPress GlotPress is the translation management software that powers Translate.WordPress.org. More information is available at glotpress.org. pages)
  • Little optimizations in the code after the last releases

I hope that for the GWTD GlotDict will be bug free so in case of other bugs don’t hesitate to create a ticket on https://github.com/Mte90/GlotDict/issues with the link that generate issues and the language when happen.

In conclusion thanks to the many users that reported the problems and reported with tickets or by chat, you are amazing guys!

GlotDict 1.1.5

Hey amazing Polyglots!

A new release will be available on your Firefox or Chrome in few hours with new features.

I got inspiration for new features from https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/2016/08/23/the-glossaries-in-the-wordpress-localization/ (the survey inside) so because the Italian Translation Weekend is near and the GWTD will be in November I chosen to release a new version.

New Features:

  • Add link to Consistency tool on terms (now the term with tooltip is a link, very easy to reconize)
  • On right click on that term the same is appended in the text in translation (superfast!)
  • Text for new installation to look on the readme (there are many hotkeys to discover!)
  • Improved Readme (well I want that people know the power of the extension)

For proposal of new features: https://github.com/Mte90/GlotDict
I hope in no bug but well in case they are new feature that wait to reported and fixed.

Happy localizationLocalization Localization (sometimes shortened to "l10n") is the process of adapting a product or service to a particular language, culture, and desired local "look-and-feel."!

Open a ticket on https://github.com/Mte90/GlotDict/issues

Thanks to Pascal Casier and Emre Erkan for the help for that project in the last months.
Also to Codeat.co (my web agency) and my co-workers that help me to work on that project during my work hours and also for the hosting for the update system/glossaries generator.

GlotDict 1.0.6 – After the GWTD

At GWTD I have done a super easy fast session about how a browser extension can change your translation workflow on glotpressGlotPress GlotPress is the translation management software that powers Translate.WordPress.org. More information is available at glotpress.org., in this case on translate.wordpress.orgtranslate.wordpress.org The platform for contributing to the translation of WordPress core, themes and plugins..
Link for the live session about this extension for the new users: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/wptranslationday/18
So what is the new features of this awesome super cool extension?

  • Fix for terms detection near () symbols
  • Fix alignment of toolbar for PTEProject Translation Editor A Project Translation Editor (often referred to as PTE) is a person, who has access to validate strings on a specific project (for example BuddyPress, WooCommerce or Twenty Fourteen) for one specific locale. A project translation editor can approve strings that are added by translation contributors. Per project translation, editors are appointed by a general translation editor after a request by the project author or by the contributors themselves.
  • Enhancement: New UIUI UI is an acronym for User Interface - the layout of the page the user interacts with. Think ‘how are they doing that’ and less about what they are doing. on first use
  • Enhancement: No default language on first use
  • Feature: Shortcut on Ctrl+Enter to click “Suggest new translation” or “Add translation”
  • Feature: Shortcut on Page Down to open the previous stringString A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings. to translate
  • Feature: Shortcut on Page Up to open the next string to translate
  • Enhancement: New glossaries: he_IL, ro_RO, th, en_AU, en_CA
  • New icon by Crowdedtent

Actually the languages supported are 18!
How to add a new localeLocale Locale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. A list of all locales supported by WordPress in https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/? see the video!

The interesting part of this version are the hotkeys to speed up the translations!
With ctrl+enter (ctrl not command for the OSX users) the string that your are translating is saved (you don’t need to click with mouse, is automatically done by GlotDict) and with Page Up and Page Down you can switch between the stringsString A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings. (on the switch they are not saved).
