WordPress 7.0 ready to be translated

WordPress 7.0, scheduled for April 9, 2026, is now ready to be translated on translate.wordpress.orgtranslate.wordpress.org The platform for contributing to the translation of WordPress core, themes and plugins.!

If you’re looking to work on the latest translations, you’ll find them in the development projects. Also, everything for the WordPress 6.9 version is now available in its own project, which you can access here.

WordPress 7.0 introduces several new stringsString A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings.. Translations that were previously completed for the GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler. It uses ‘blocks’ to add richness rather than shortcodes, custom HTML etc. https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/ project have been copied to the new project. This means that fewer new strings should need translating.

WordPress 6.9.2 has been released….

Hi.
It has been brought to my attention that you regularly upload translations to a wide selection of target languages for a few translation projects.

As you probably know, everyone involved in the further handling of your translations are volunteers, who spend their time building and nurturing their respective locale teams. In many cases, these teams have enormous backlogs. See https://translate.wordpress.org/stats/ for some statistics.

If/when the localeLocale Locale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. A list of all locales supported by WordPress in https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/ teams check pending translations, their main goal is usually to help new translation contributors improve their quality. The locale teams don’t really offer any general “translation validation and fixing” service.

In the Polyglots’ handbook, it’s clearly stated that nobody should upload machine translations that haven’t been checked by someone who knows the target language really well (See https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/handbook/translating/expectations/ ).

In short, by repeatedly uploading machine translations of questionable quality, you’re exploiting a limited resource of volunteer time. We kindly request that you don’t upload translations for languages you don’t personally know well.

Where are we going?

I’d love some thoughts from the team on what we should be building towards, given the progress of LLMs to date, and what will happen over the next 12-18 months. With our goals to democratize publishing and make WordPress and as much of its ecosystem of extensions available to people regardless of their preferred language, what gets us there the fastest? What should be automated, and when should humans come in? Feel free to bring in folks from the AI team for this brainstorm. Let’s also assume that costs of the frontier-level machine translation for tens of millions of stringsString A string is a translatable part of the software.
