We’re in hard string freeze for 4.7 – Prepare your locales for the the release

Dear Polyglots,

The last stringsString A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings. for 4.7 (the about page strings) have been imported to the development project and that means no strings will change anymore before Tuesday, December 6th, the expected release date for WordPress 4.7.

That means there are two things for all GTEs to do now:

1. Translate the 4.7 project, Admin and Network admin

It’s time to head to translate.wordpress.org and finish translating the last batch of new strings.

Please don’t forget that in order to qualify for an automatic release, you need to have all strings in the following projects translated 100%:

There is also a new default theme that comes with 4.7 – Twenty Seventeen which can also use some of your time.

2. Prepare the SVN directory for your locale for automated packages

WordPress 4.7 is in soft string freeze

Hello everyone,

WordPress 4.7 RC1 was announced on Friday and with it, all the stringsString A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings. in this release with the exception of the About page strings are now effectively frozen. A soft string freeze means they won’t be changed and no new ones will be added before the release in the first week of December.

Translate the 4.7 project, Admin, Network admin, Continent & cities and Twenty Seventeen

If your Development project is not translated to 100%, this is a good time to take care of that. Head to translate.wordpress.orgtranslate.wordpress.org The platform for contributing to the translation of WordPress core, themes and plugins. and translate:

Upcoming hard string freezeString freeze The term "string freeze" is used by the core team to mark the end of changes to the strings of an upcoming release. Sometimes a string freeze has two phases a soft freeze and a hard freeze. A string freeze is announced on the Polyglots blog by the current release lead.

According to the development schedule, hard strings freeze should come on November 29th (+1d) and the release is expected on December 6th (+1d). There will be another post here and a global ping when that happens.

Help us validate 5 WooCommerce extensions in 24 locales

Thanks to GoDaddy’s initiative to support localizationLocalization Localization (sometimes shortened to "l10n") is the process of adapting a product or service to a particular language, culture, and desired local "look-and-feel." of WordPress plugins & themes, we at Automattic received translations of 5 plugins in 24 localesLocale Locale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. Validation process (2 options)

There are two ways you can use the translation files we have.

I will import everything in one week (in case GTEs prefer the method 1) as Waiting status.

  • If you don’t have time to validate, the translations will just stay as “Waiting”. There is no time limit to review them.

  • There may not be all 5 translation files for your locale. That’s because some of the plugins are 100% completed already.
  • Preparing these files involved a bit of manual work on my side, so if you see any technical flaws it’s probably my fault. Please don’t hesitate to point them out, and I’d be glad to fix/investigate the cause.

Translations: 162 locales. 61 locales at 100%. 6 locales have more than 95%. 6 locales have more than 90%. 28 locales have more than 50%. 53 locales have less than 50%. 8 locales don’t have a WP project.

Polish and Estonian are at 99%. @waclawjacek @iworks @petskratt are kindly asked to get in contact with Petya (@petya) as we can release for 4.6 even with the missing translations.

Vietnamese and Uighur are currently inactive even though they’re 97% translated – these are the two locales we need to get released soon.

Congratulations go to the Tibetan team (@tibetanitech & team) who brought their language to 100%. Our thanks also go to the Urdu team (@codemovement.pk & team): Urdu is currently growing by 10% each week.

Technical update

New text strings have been added in O2, P2p2 "p2" is the name of the theme that blogs at make.wordpress.org use (and o2 is the accompanying plugin). When asked to post something "on the p2" by a member of the Polyglots team, that usually means you're asked to post on the team blog https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/. Breathe and Forums.

Petya (@petya) has added several of the new articles in the planning spreadsheet, some pages will be removed.

Pascal (@casiepa) suggested we have a section for General Translation Editors in the handbook. Petya is looking forward to read his onboarding document for nl_BE GTEs in English, so we can migrate some of it to our own handbook.

Global WordPress translation day 2 survey

The tentative date for Global WordPress Translation Day 2 has been set to November 12th, 2016. Petya will soon start a survey for everybody who registered for the event on the website and will post about it on make.wordpress.orgWordPress.org The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https://wordpress.org//polyglots to ask people to fill in before we make final decisions how to continue.

Open discussion

Pascal (@casiepa) has added a list of the top 120 plugins to his website: http://wp-info.org/plugin-top120. Users can select a locale and in return see the amount of waiting text strings and direct links to the plugin page on translate.wordpress.org.

Behind one or two major versions – releasing 95%+ locales for WordPress 4.6

It’s been a week since 4.6 and it’s amazing that we’ve got 60 localesLocale Locale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. A list of all locales supported by WordPress in https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/ released for it. I’d like to suggest that we release the 95% + locales as well, especially those who are behind more than one major version.

If you’re receiving this post in an email, you’re a Global Translation EditorTranslation Editor Translation editors can approve translations for projects. The GTE (General Translation Editor) and LM (Locale Manager) roles can add new users with the "Project Translation Editor" role that can approve translations for specific projects. There are two different Translation Editor roles: General Translation Editor and Project Translation Editor for one of these locales. Please follow the instructions for a manual release in the handbook to create a package for your language.

Locales Behind more than one major versions

NB! That means your translation is inactive and your language IS NOT available for download or select on install anymore! A manual release is highly encouraged.

When a translation goes behind more than one major version it disappears for new users. That’s why it is highly recommended that locales translated 90%+ and previously active release now even though their translations need a bit more work to get to 100%. I’m including three locales at 85% + as well.

That means there are two things for all GTEs to do now:

1. Translate the 4.6 project, Admin, Network admin and Continent & cities

The release will hit on Tuesday, August 16th. It’s time to head to translate.wordpress.org and finish translating the last batch of new strings.

Help needed to translate our support forum title

A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings. for the upcoming WordPress 4.6 release with the exception of the strings from the About page, are frozen and won’t be changed.

The release is scheduled for August 16th, so we recommend that you use the time between now and the hard string freeze (expected on August 5th), to translate and test translation for everything that is included in the 4.6. development project.

WordPress 4.5 RC2 has just been released, and with it, there is now a hard string freezeString freeze The term "string freeze" is used by the core team to mark the end of changes to the strings of an upcoming release. A string freeze also means that there will be no more strings added to the core project. Sometimes a string freeze has two phases a soft freeze and a hard freeze. A string freeze is announced on the Polyglots blog by the current release lead. for WordPress 4.5 (including the About Page).

My apologies for the delay! I hoped to deliver this news much sooner.

Release proceedings for 4.5 are scheduled to start at April 12, 2016 at 0900 PDT.

Dear Polygots Team,

Happy 2016!

At the 2015 WordPress Community Summit, the Support Team discussed a few items that we would like to work on. One of the main ones came from a realisation that the current Support Team only really represents the English speaking community.

With that, we thought it would make perfect sense to connect with the rest of the different localeLocale Locale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. All locale specific WordPress sites are referred to as “Rosetta sites.” The name was inspired from the ancient Rosetta Stone, which contained more or less the same text in three different languages. or not and strengthen the Support Team to represent WordPress as a whole, and not just the English crowd.

We are working on

1. Identifying these locale/language leaders
2. Sharing with them our vision of having direct support connections between localesLocale Locale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. 3. Asking them to identify a person (or more) that can be the Support Liaison for the locale/language (it does not necessarily have to be themselves).

We would love if the Support Liaison can
• Speak English (to at least some level, we do need to talk to them)
• Loves Support
• Is a person the rest of the community in that language can trust
• Understands that joining the team means we’re a family that volunteers for WordPress and are friends with each other

What they will likely do is basically become a form of a communication bridge between us and the rosetta/locale community. We don’t actually have the full plan yet and we aim to get everyone (or a decent percentage) in before we start some level of discussion about how we can make this work.

So that being said, while we have identified some locale leaders, there are many locale communities that we are unfamiliar with.

If you are a part of a locale community, could you give us the name (SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/. usernames preferred!) of the person we can speak to?

WordPress 4.4 hard string freeze – prepare your locales

We’re in hard string freeze, which means that no more stringString A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings. should be changed before the release of WordPress 4.4 on Tuesday, Dec 8th.

WordPress 4.4 string freeze and release date – bring your locales to 100%

Dear polyglots,

WordPress 4.4 RC1 and the soft string freeze for WordPress 4.4 were announced last night. WordPress 4.4 will become available for download on December 8th and it would be amazing if we have 60+ localesLocale Locale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. A list of all locales supported by WordPress in https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/ fully translated by that date and ready to go with the official release.

Soft string freezeString freeze The term "string freeze" is used by the core team to mark the end of changes to the strings of an upcoming release. A string freeze also means that there will be no more strings added to the core project. Sometimes a string freeze has two phases a soft freeze and a hard freeze. A string freeze is announced on the Polyglots blog by the current release lead. indicates that all the stringsString A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings. for the 4.4 release with the exception of the strings for the About page, are already in place and won’t be changed. It means it’s time to go ahead and prepare our locales for December 8th.

Hard freezeHard freeze See String freeze. A hard string freeze or a hard freeze is announced when all the strings of the upcoming release are frozen including the strings of the About page. A hard freeze is the final string freeze before a release. (the about page strings), which will be 100% of all strings for the 4.4 release, should be available for translation next Wednesday (December 2nd). That will give us about 6 days to finalize translations before this release reaches users.
