WooCommerce 2.7 de_DE and de_CH

Hi there, I’m GTEGeneral Translation Editor A General Translation Editor (often referred to as GTE) is a person, who has global access to validate strings on all projects for a specific locale. for de_CH coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. and WooCommerce. Wanted to start a discussion with my de_DE WooCommerce colleagues to coordinate translations for WooCommerce 2.7 release which we’re getting close to.

Not sure how this was done for 2.6, but right now the development trunk is at 76% (1121 untranslated stringsString A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings. seems to be too many), the latest stable release at 99%, but I guess the new 2.7 strings are not yet available in the latest stable release?

Trying to pingPing The act of sending a very small amount of data to an end point. Ping is used in computer science to illicit a response from a target server to test it’s connection. Ping is also a term used by Slack users to @ someone or send them a direct message (DM). Users might say something along the lines of “Ping me when the meeting starts.” some of the editors and contributors to see if anyone’s available for discussion and contribution 😁

Translation editorsTranslation Editor Translation editors can approve translations for projects. The GTE (General Translation Editor) and LM (Locale Manager) roles can add new users with the "Project Translation Editor" role that can approve translations for specific projects. WooCommerce de_CH

I wanted to take care of the WooCommerce de_CH translation. The informal translation currently is at 1%, the formal at 40%. Contributors from the last 8 months are @grapplerulrich, @webstooni, @braini87, @transl8or, @8am-1 and myself.

As with the core translation of de_CH I would suggest to not translate de_CH directly, but batch import from de_DE after making some minor modifications. de_DE is currently at 100% both informal and formal. For more information on how the batch import works, please refer to my GitHub repository at https://github.com/openstream/wordpress-de-ch.

This means that no one should suggest any translations in de_CH, but only in de_DE unless there’s a difference specific to Switzerland in the wording, grammar or any anything else. In the GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the ‘pull request’ where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged be the repository owner. https://github.com/ repoWordPress Localization Repository The WordPress Localization Repository at https://i18n.svn.wordpress.org/ is a Subversion repository where official WordPress translations are maintained. de_CH ready for 4.6 dryrun

Just wanted to let @soean and @timse201 know that I rejected one stringString A string is a translatable part of the software. A translation consists of a multitude of localized strings. for #de_CH 4.6 not because I don’t like them, but because we’re not translating directly in de_CH, but only in de_DE. All changes for de_CH are derived from de_DE and adapted by a semi-automatic updated script. More information can be found on https://github.com/openstream/wordpress-de-ch.

Request for removing gsw locale

We discussed this a couple of times already with some of the GTEs such as @swissspidy and @grapplerulrich. I was the only one against removing Swiss German (gsw), because I thought someone might find it useful and pick it up again, but it has now been inactive for 8 months and the initial creator @swissky is no longer interested in maintaining it, either.

The main problem pointed out be @bedas is that some contributors are confused about which localeLocale Locale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. A list of all locales supported by WordPress in https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/ to contribute to. Also, as gsw is spoken Swiss German, not the officially written form, it always was more of a fun project than a real locale.

Important note: de_CH formal and informal should remain unaffected by the removal of gsw.

I just saw that @aliyanage is also GTEGeneral Translation Editor A General Translation Editor (often referred to as GTE) is a person, who has global access to validate strings on all projects for a specific locale., so if any of the GTEs has any objection, please comment within the next 2 weeks or forever hold your peace. The deadline is July 13, 2016.

I’d like to request https translate wordpress org…

I’d like to request https://translate.wordpress.org/projects/wp/dev/de-ch/default to be mapped to the formal version of de_CH, i.e. https://translate.wordpress.org/projects/wp/dev/de-ch/formal, because currently it still shows as 0% on https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/

This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https://wordpress.org/, but it should redirect to the Swiss German rosettaRosetta The code name of the theme for the local WordPress sites (eg. bg.wordpress.org is a “Rosetta” site). All locale specific WordPress sites are referred to as “Rosetta sites.” The name was inspired from the ancient Rosetta Stone, which contained more or less the same text in three different languages. site de-ch.wordpress.org instead. The WHOIS of that domain says
