Returning Contributors

New Contributors 🎉

We are especially excited to welcome our two new contributors to the Luganda localization community. We hope this is the beginning of many more contributions to WordPress.

Event Agenda and Activities

  • Introductions and onboarding: The workshop started with introductions and an overview of the WordPress translation ecosystem, the Luganda localeLocale Locale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. A list of all locales supported by WordPress in https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/, and how contributors can participate.
  • GlotPress orientation: Contributors were guided through the tools used for WordPress translations, including how to submit translations and understand the review process.
  • Hands-on translation: Participants worked directly on Luganda translations, contributing new strings while discussing terminology, context, and appropriate translations.
  • Translation review: Experienced contributors reviewed submitted translations to improve accuracy, consistency, readability, and alignment with existing Luganda terminology.
  • Contributor support: New contributors received hands-on guidance on how to continue contributing beyond WordCamp Jinja.
  • Community connection: The session also created space for translators, developers, students, and other WordPress community members to connect and learn about the wider localization effort.

Progress Overview

Together, the 11 contributors submitted 156 Luganda translations and reviewed 43 strings.

While each individual string may appear small, collectively these contributions help make WordPress easier to understand and use for Luganda-speaking users.

The workshop also demonstrated the importance of in-person contribution events. Bringing contributors together makes it easier to discuss terminology, resolve translation questions, mentor new contributors, and build relationships that continue long after the event.

Growing the Luganda Translation Community

One of the most important outcomes of the workshop was welcoming two new contributors into the Luganda translation project.

Growing the contributor base is critical to the long-term sustainability of the locale. More contributors mean more translations, more reviewers, better discussions around terminology, and a stronger foundation for maintaining Luganda translations as WordPress continues to evolve.

Events such as WordCamp Jinja provide an important entry point for people who may be interested in contributing to WordPress but are not necessarily developers. Translation gives speakers of local languages an opportunity to contribute their linguistic knowledge and cultural understanding directly to the WordPress project.

Acknowledgments and Next Steps

We are grateful to the WordCamp Jinja 2026 organizers for creating space for contributors to participate in the translation workshop.

We also thank the wider WordPress community for continuing to support localization and inclusion within the WordPress project.

Most importantly, thank you to every contributor who translated, reviewed, asked questions, supported another contributor, or helped move the Luganda locale forward.

Next Steps

  • Continue translating outstanding Luganda strings across WordPress projects.
  • Continue reviewing submitted translations to maintain accuracy and consistency.
  • Mentor and support the new contributors who joined during WordCamp Jinja.
  • Encourage more Luganda speakers to participate in WordPress localization.
  • Continue organizing translation workshops and contribution sessions during WordCamps, meetups, and other community events.
  • Strengthen consistency in commonly used Luganda WordPress terminology.

Let’s keep the momentum going and continue building a WordPress experience that more Luganda speakers can comfortably use.
